I'm looking for the title of the B/W movie, I believe a foreign production, made between the wars. This film has been shown on TCM in the past. The subject matter is about a few French soldiers captured as POW's during WW I and taken to a German castle turned into a prison. The lead French POW was a rather famous actor from his era. I believe the "message" of the film is the futility of war...at the end of the film, the prison commander, an old German officer with many battle scars, has befriended the French POW. The prison commander shoots the escaping Frenchman at the end, when both are fulfilling their "duty." The Frenchman to try to escape and the German to keep his prisoners from escaping. The film language is in French (I think) with spots of English thrown in. This film was also "lost" for many years and "found" sometime around the early 1960's...of course the name escapes me which is driving me nuts!
