  1. It can get hot in Mpls/StPaul (I've lived more years in St Paul -always want to note that) too, but nothing like FL. I have been paring down the winter wardrobe, and I will probably donate more, The charities actually like it, for there are folks moving north or relocating for work and they can use those clothes. While I could walk the Mississippi River road and Summit Ave from my old apartment, now I can venture out to Palm Beach blvd, 1st Street, and even McGregor Blvd (where the Ford-Edison winter estates are located) taking in about the same distance. the houses are similar: h4. Just substitute the palms for oaks, and this house can be imagined on Summit or East River Rd. Or the houses reflect their environment: h4. I would have preferred a light sunny yellow, or a pale warmer seashell pink or pale coral. Cooler colors always seem wrong down here to me. Some of the loveliest homes in this part of the world are found on Key West. I simply adore Key West..
  2. Well, thank you for responding. I can emphasize very well with Laura's insecurities, I know she feels. But it is also fair to say in their night together, she is definitely more in love with him. It is to note that she idolizes him, and she does not see his injuries (his change) as he does. She speaks of how "he is everything I ever dreamed" I find it ironic that he proposes to her with what he perceives is selfishness, but in truth in resulting higher love. h4. Laura Pennington, drama queen -not! I was not arguing the incredible power of love to transform us, I just wanted to see if someone else could discern the motivations of the characters were displayed one way, but received by each other in a different view. I just didn't see her jumping up and racing away.... with her behavior even at the USO dance, she maintains a very low profile and just slips away. I would have had her just quietly stop playing at the piano and quietly weep. That would escalate the drama of Oliver approaching her, The dialog wouldn't even need to change. She is just such a quiet person.. Edited by: casablancalover on Apr 26, 2012 10:25 PM
  3. I know you meant Robert Young, and I am in agreement with you. If you've ever seen Father Knows Best, I think this was the role that let him transition out of male pretty face status. I love how Dorothy is given harsher lighting and average looks; it sort of helps us poor underlings in the audience realize the limits of what we see with our eyes, and where beauty is found. And Herbert Marshall's wonderful story of the people plunged into darkness is an eye-opener, all puns intended! My only quibble is the denouement (for the couple) after their marriage, As a writer, I can see the plot-progression, (with the symbol of the Cottage for Newlyweds only) but more could have been made of what Mrs Minite sees and not the wedding night melodrama played out. How do you see the night of enchantment? Given the history of Oliver, it is a problem that Laura cannot see his underlying pain that her affection is alleviating. Someone talk me down..

  5. It is amazing to me how willing some places are at forgetting their architectural heritage. In downtown Minneapolis, it is much like many other cities, and my newly adopted home in Fort Myers, some buildings grow derelict and need to be razed, but more often than not it is the attitude of commerce and their insistence on the new look that holds sway. So great buildings are lost, replaced with what is supposed to be a vast improvement. If it is any small comfort, the new building will be obsolete faster than the building that used to be in that footprint. I know some people complain, but considering the earthquakes and the times, I think Los Angeles does considerable better than most US cities. This is a nation built on change and diversity. I like the uniqueness. Another from my walk yesterday: As so often the case of these lovely large homes, This one houses an Attorney's office.. It looks so Prairie School, then there's the Italianate posts on the stair front. Edited by: casablancalover on Apr 26, 2012 12:10 AM Edited by: casablancalover on Apr 26, 2012 12:33 AM

  7. I did that a few years ago with the steps in "the Music Box" on a thread here. We're talking years now, so I may not have the images. Sorry I have to get to work and can't chime in right now, but I am sure other's will have more to say about LA's past, and how much Auturo can appreciate, compared to the involvement or lack thereof of some other cities.

  9. the plantations are lovely, aren't they? On my daily walk through the neighborhood, I pass by the Burroughs House, I lovely mansion right along the Caloosahatchee. It is open for tours; alas, I haven't done that yet.
  10. h4. It is Please, No More.. Oh dear... I didn't mean that Beach Movies are under the judgement of Class or Trash... "Admin" then locked the thread. Now I have some major penance. I did watch most nights; well, at least the intros.. That's why I got in the mood for the beach music. By bad I meant predictable, characters a little flat and a mentality that's a tad dated, that's all. Funny, those same characteristics are in many westerns, and I --like-- love most of those! I can post some predictable songs here. My favorite, dedicated to lovers: [Robin Ward|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2Ez4frVJN0]
  11. I really do enjoy some of the newer rock, but most of the great stuff is loaded with ads! Or they are only the approved video, and if it All Time Low, some of the videos are lame. Just give us the music... So. it's back to classics here too, this time more recent: Stephen Bishop: [On and On|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oByMiF4hPg] [Love at a Distance|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I12K-VlHFtg]
  12. While these gracious mansions have their charm, it is not all moonlight and magnolias in the Old South even now. A few blocks from me, homeowners are trying to save their home. It is shrouded in an enormous tent, covered in HUGE LETTERS : DANGER! POISON! Fighting the roaches is one thing. But termites.. Give me a stucco craftsman any day.! 13. Steel.. You want to capture a period in history, from 1949-1950 Check out Lustron houses, http://www.lustronconnection.org/ It was a particular time.
  14. I have been told that If I want inspiring city architecture, I need to see Prague Vienna Paris The history at least, is venerated there, and the war did not destroy the whole city.
  15. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND At the 4:29 mark, is the iconic reaction of the NASA team to the landing, all on one tech's face.. -because he played the five tones! It's a priceless reaction to me.. He holds that expression for 10 seconds in the film, makes it feel like an eternity.. I never realized it before, i mentioned it in favorite movie lines, and I repeat here.. This movie is unique for it ends on an intuitive note.. Everyone has this intuitive sense that *all will be well...* Williams' score rising.. and the shots of all the team just watching, and knowing. Gives me goosebumps.
  16. Ha! shows how different posters can be.. I don't think I've used the search in six months. But of course, if I have a reason to look up a thread, it can be valuable.
  17. What a wonderful juxtaposition of time/place and the person.. Thank you for posting.

  19. Hugh Jackman - Jean Valjean Anne Hathaway - Fantine Russell Crowe - Javert Amanda Seyfried - Cossette Eddie Redmayne - Marius and the biggest surprise to me: *Colm Wilkinson - the Bishop* For those of us who hold this musical (sung-through theater) in the highest esteem, it will be difficult not to compare Jackman with Wilkinson, who [owned|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsYnhVITf9E] the role of Valjean on Broadway and London stages. Jackman has great pipes, and so does Hathaway, so we shall see... Edited by: casablancalover on Apr 21, 2012 8:46 PM
  20. ginnyfan, I think you're fun, welcome.. Let me welcome you too, Heidi! I am curious. . . How long did you two read the message boards before joining us? I think I was just a reader for 2 months. As you can guess, we are movie fans above all. I was just going to start a thread (very easy to do, isn't it?) about the Musical version of Les Miz , being released this December. You are welcome to comment. I am putting it in General, since there will be the invariable comparison to the 1934 version. At least I hope so. As far as tips and ideas, Kyle (hlywdkjk) is the guy who has it together. If you keep reading, you will find something that sparks your interest.
  21. She didn't always have a giving up style of emotion.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaQGNww-sOU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RY5P0Vk9TIM Detach Lesley, when they yank your chain... But this trip down adolescent hormone-driven angst is tiresome and so inappropriate practiced after 30... Lets get back to the beach. 22. I will head out to the tomorrow to capture some local flavor. Now all this nostalgia has me fantasizing about Key West... ;-)
  23. Your picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks for posting.
  24. Clever tie-in with the jacket, Scottman. That earns extra points. It must be the beefcake thread in Hot Topics that has me distracted. This is not my favorite summer song, but here are my favorites from Lesley Gore and the Beach Boys.
