The story is interesting, and history's open to interpretation. I ask a historian in London at the V & A and he said this, paraphrasing. In England, starting in the 1600s, coffeehouses sprang up in cities like you see in the USA now, and it became a man's pastime. They also had a club-style atmosphere, where you could talk about the current events and exchanges topics and philosophies of the day. One big difference though; they could also be "card" houses and that meant gambling and the like. It seems coffee gained a notoriety because of it's physical effects (some whispering about "friskiness" -wink-wink-nudge-nudge) and the cheap cost to drink it. In Victorian novels, it wasn't the Public House that the wastrel off-spring found their demise, it was the gambling establishment, that served coffee or visa-versa. They seemed to have gained a bad reputation. Coffee and Coffeehouses fell out of favor, one theory holds, for the East India Tea Company (they imported the coffee too) decided the Tea market far more lucrative, so it simply shifted it's import of tea into the English markets and gave up it's coffee importing to other European concerns. Some historians argue though the English found tea easier to handle, since it didn't require grinding and roasting, thus that's why coffee fell out of favor. But I don't buy that argument; the Europeans were drinking more coffee, not less, and their coffee culture was more refined than the English. I do agree with the take that the tea tax really helped fuel the drive for coffee in the colonies, Also, the Central American countries that supplied the coffee were much closer and available for trade, so maybe the Colonists saw it as a win-win to defy England. I love the English tea, Hot please, with milk poured first in the cup and two lumps.. Movies in 8th Grade History Class!

We never discussed the movies either. I saw Cyrano de Bergerac for the first time in English Class, and I have loved the Jose Farrer - Mala Powers version ever since. -
The one I haven't seen is Kirk Douglas as Ulysses (1955). Saw the beginning of Helen of Troy last night, and Helen was in Ulysses too. I have seen it only once, but I found interesting, though the dubbing wasn't very good, and the women played their roles like statues. Now I am wondering if I saw this in school, for we read Ulysses in English Lit class.

>Calamity wrote: Are you sure it wasn't in 8th grade? Just kidding. I was going to watch this last night, have never seen it, but wound up doing some stuff in the yard since it was so mild and stays lighter later now. By the time I came in, I forgot to switch it on. Now you have got me thinking.. Hum, what did I have for lunch yesterday?* Every once and a while, my sis and I will mix it up, good-naturedly, about what we remember. I checked with her, and she said, >No, it was World Geography in seventh grade, American History in 8th, and Current Events in 9th. I countered it was American History in 7th, Geography in 8th and Current Events in 9th, because when we hit Senior High, and the rotation was American History in 10th grade, Social Problems, 11th grade (which we supposedly solved the problems of the world), and World History in our senior year. I love history then and now, and I really loved World History the best. Mr Kolke was my teacher and he was great. So, whether my sister Carol is right or I am, it is a great movie and I hope you catch next time it's on. h5. *I had a hot dog, some touch of lime tortilla chips, and a banana. BTW- I think Calamity is a great handle. -

I saw Drums Along the Mohawk, in school- 7th grade! Yes, it's true; I saw DATM in 7th grade. It's was in black and white, I have to say.. Funny, I posted a pic elsewhere, and it was black and white, but I didn't recall the connection. When I saw it the first time on television, it was in color and I surprised. I didn't realize it was a color film. I think it does a wonderful job in recreated the period with what we see. Only quibble is that white for brides wasn't that common among even the wealthy, for I had read that Victoria started that one when she married Albert. But for establishing story, seeing her in white cues us visually now as a wedding. -
>finance wrote: I went to the Philly event last night, which featured an extended interview of Eve Saint by Ben, with a number of sharp exchanges. She was really putting him in his place, and he was even getting a little flustered. She is still really, really sharp. ......At least 200 people were left standing outside when seating capacity was reached........I was going up and down the line, asking if anyone was on the TCM message boards. Not a one. Absolutely fascinating! Miami is no small town; I may pullout my umbrella for sun protection. How long were you in line? And why no TCM message board people?! They were there, I am sure one or two; but do they participate in secret? I can't figure out why people would want to cut themselves off from connectedness. In one aspect, puts our freedom of expression on it's head, doesn't it? Did you tell the group you were on the message boards? I am still bringing my camera. I want my evening noted somewhere. It's been a few days since the movie Glory was viewed. We've discussed the subject and the larger issues, TikiSoo. What does TikiKid take away from the experience now? -

>When I watch these I realize teaching kids the importance of responsibility was a big thing. Nowadays kids see their parents "call in sick" to go to the amusement park, run red lights & cut others off in traffic. Wouldn't it behoove teachers to show these films now-it may teach kids to behave better. Here's another one: -

Isn't it a hoot?! The Hygiene film strips were the best. We used to have a quick quiz afterward. Can you believe it? Our teacher, Miss Suchla, would ask us the usual, and the answers were easy: soap and water clean towels ice cream isn't a good choice to bring in the bathroom. . . Then, out of the blue, she would ask the name of the boy who didn't wash his hands. h4. ? ! ? Trick questions! -
