Charles Boyer, in Gaslight. And Monty Clift, in The Heiress, and Claude Rains in Notorious, though his mother helped him in that one. You could say mother was a cadette.. And who can forget Fred MacMurray. and Joseph Cotton in Shadow of a Doubt.
All these men have played sincere gentlemen in other roles, so these may seem a stretch, but that's the point. To be a good cad, you must fool the characters and the audience.

Sadly, it's just not rewrites, but even current stories get the update treatment with technology. I have to change around a spec script to accommodate the changes in cell phones.. etc. Eventually, it will probably have to be shown as a sample.
On the other hand, it could be amusing to have a "cell can't reach" twist to the story.

Yes, Thelma Ritter and Connie Gilchrist riding out the express 6:42 is scene I really enjoy. Refrigerator opening is a nice touch, ties it in to the relationship of all them to Porter.

But, don't you wonder why she left town anyway, if it wasn't with one of the three husbands? The story leaves the impression that she's leaving with one of them. Then she leaves with none. She didn't strike me as one to save face, since she has no problem to writing the snidest letter of all time to three different women.
Or possibly it's like Porter refers, he maybe stood up Addie Ross at the last second.

h5. Suspending your disbelief.
Because the Letters are the unifying element to the characters involved. Imagine how much disbelief you would need to suspend if Ilsa and Victor happen to have just walked into Rick's Cafe Americain during Happy Hour for some attitude adjustment. Then what's the big deal in getting out, and how can Rick help or hinder their progress? I think it was a good device. It helps create the tension involved (upping the stakes). Can you think of a better contrivance?
I am reminded when I brought my sons to the Star Trek convention in St Paul many years ago . There was even more suspension of disbelief going on, in real time. People were busy hawking their Klingon language programs, for mac or pc.
We have so many unexplained things happen in our lives that we need to either accept it as not understandable or change our approach to them so it does make sense.
Why now start questioning the letters of transit? Hum. . . why doesn't Stasser just do his job and have some underling in the Nazi clerical office invalidate those particular letters?
Don't ruin the fun for yourself. The previous explanations I've seen make it plausible for me.

Not just clips, but whole cartoons tonight. Something for children who maybe frightened of Thunderstorms. A way to cope, through the charm of Walt Disney.

Margaret O'Brien was the best 4 year old EVER!
This is one of my favorite movie Intros.. From a fanfare, to the action-packed delightful opening credits, starts this very talky Shakespeare comedy.. I love it all!

One more from North By Northwest
I love the dream state of this music in contrast to the all too disturbing chords of reality in the movie theme.
