Did they, perhaps, write for Rod Stewart and Michael Bolton? Rod Stewart's "Downtown Train" was a cover of a Tom Waits song.

"If you don't like Lizabeth Scott, I bet you HATE Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen!!! Sorry, who are they? Two critically-acclaimed singer-songwriters from the 60's and 70's.

I wasn't saying the musicals themselves are forgotten, I was saying that the social mores of that era as well as the popular music from then is, for the most part, long-forgotten. Social mores like that miserable production code gave us things like the Andy Hardy series, which dfordoom has rightly criticized.

I can happily say I haven't seen most of the musicals on the lists here. Neither have I. To me, most Hollywood musicals are just SO damned corny and reflective of archaic social mores that are fortunately long-forgotten. Things like those Mickey/Judy "let's put on a show in the barnyard" musicals are not even campy, they are unwatchable. And "State Fair" - gag! Just the thought of that scene where all the people at the fair are singing "It's a Grand Night for Singing" together makes my skin crawl. It's watching this sort of drivel that makes you thankful that rock 'n' roll would emerge in the next decade and render things like this dated and ridiculous.

Oh. Thanks, and if that's another way to say "different strokes", I agree. Yes. I appreciate people who are not afraid to express their opinion and those that respect others with very different opinions.

Your mileage may vary.

And Madonna, whatever else anybody can say of her, almost singlehandedly, salvaged the massive risks of "Evita" to where, at worst, it can still be called "worth looking at". I mean, look, everybody makes bad choices; I paid to see "Desperately Seeking Susan", and she chose to be in it, and we both walked away from that flaming mess with our lives intact; I call that a no-fault memory! YMMV, I love "Desperately Seeking Susan"!

If we're talking about musicals from the 'Classic Hollywood' era, then for the most part no. I find a lot of them corny, and since I mostly don't like pre-rock music (except for some jazz), the songs don't connect with me at all. However, I do like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"!

What Classic Films Were Your Biggest Disappointment?
retrocrusher replied to newclassicfilmfan's topic in General Discussions
Whether anyone would consider this a classic I'm not sure, but "Girls Girls Girls". I really LOVE Stella Stevens, and I was hoping to see a lot of her in this rather forgettable Elvis vehicle. And while she did look sexy in the scenes she was in, her screentime was way too brief as Elvis instead romances the rather forgettable Laurel Goodwin. As for old movies - all of the films in that Cary Grant collection released last fall. A friend of mine gave it to me for Christmas. I hadn't heard of any of the titles before, and I found all of them to be immensely disappointing. -
Movies playing this month that should not be on TCM.....

Allow me to add my opinion: Unlike most of the people here I actually like "newer" movies (as in films made after 1967, which I find a bit funny considering that was 40 years ago). And while I don't particularly care for movies from the 90's, I like a lot of 80's movies; same for the 70's, and I really LOVE movies from the 60's, especially anything with the really sexy and cute women of that era (Stella Stevens, Angie Dickinson, Connie Stevens, Sandra Dee, Barbara Eden, the early Bond women, etc.) And yeah, I also like old black & white movies as well, but not all of them. One of my favorites of that era is Lives of a Bengal Lancer. But at the same time I can't stand most musicals. I *hate* that Lawrence Welk/Mitch Miller type of music, and to me a lot of those musicals are very much in that style. (Btw, kimpunkrock, cool username. Do you like music from the 80's? It's my favorite decade for music)
