  3. In a first, Twitter adds ‘get the facts’ warning to Trump tweets Politics May 26, 2020 6:54 PM EDT For the first time, Twitter has flagged some of President Donald Trump’s tweets with a warning. On Tuesday, Twitter added a warning phrase to two Trump tweets that called mail-in ballots “fraudulent” and predicted that “mail boxes will be robbed,” among other things. Under the tweets, there is now a link reading “Get the facts about mail-in ballots” that guides users to a Twitter “moments” page with news stories about Trump’s unsubstantiated claims........ The move comes after years in which Twitter has declined to apply its community guidelines and other rules of the road to the 45th U.S. president. It’s too soon to tell whether this action represents a turning point for Twitter in its treatment of Trump. But the warning labels suggest that the president has finally crossed a line that the company was not willing to move for him............ https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/in-a-first-twitter-adds-get-the-facts-warning-to-trump-tweets

Donie O'Sullivan @donie Despite plea to @jack from Lori Klausutis' widow, Twitter says this morning it will NOT be removing Trump's tweets that insinuate @JoeNBC was responsible for Klausutis’ death. 8:55 AM · May 26, 2020· -------------------------------------------------------------- Twitter spokesperson: “We are deeply sorry about the pain these statements, and the attention they are drawing, are causing the family." (No details on what those policy changes might be)
  5. Tom Joseph @TomJChicago · 9h Trump just did another psycho tweet about Joe Scarborough (I took a screenshot). 6. Cine Phobia What will make Americans feel comfortable going out to the movies again? "........Within a few weeks, though, as the epidemic’s urgency waned, owners began to get restive. They were losing money and wanted to get back to selling tickets. A few managers were arrested for defying shutdown orders. Gradually, compromises began to emerge: Sometimes theaters were able to get by with alternate-row seating or by making masks available for patrons. As it turns out, that long ago epidemic changed the movie industry forever. Countless independent theaters across the country, lacking the financial wherewithal to survive the many months of uncertainty, went under............. Today, even before the coronavirus pandemic closed the cinemas, big changes were under way in the industry. The traditional procession of movies through a sacrosanct “theatrical window” — when you have to get off the sofa and go to the multiplex and buy a ticket to see it — has been under pressure from the rise of vertically integrated streaming giants trying to rush their films onto new platforms. In the wake of this pandemic, are movie theaters, having long since lost their essential place in our culture, going to become relics of the past? Probably not. People are desperate to get out of the house, get their kids out of the house, and get back to normal...... In South Korea, a country that didn’t take nearly the drastic lockdown measures the U.S. did (mainly because it was able to do widespread testing and isolating early on, which we certainly did not), movie-theater attendance has started to crawl back. Many theaters in the country are now operating with staggered seating, masks, temperature checks, technological developments ......... the entire economic model of the movie business, and its system of contractual relations, is up in the air............ a straight-to-video release makes it easier to bury your flops. Disney and Warner’s biggest bets — such as Mulan and Wonder Woman 1984 — have been moved to later dates to open in theaters. That’s because megablockbusters, the kinds of movies studios spend hundreds of millions of dollars making and marketing, need theatrical releases to break even. .......... The end of this thing — if indeed an end ever comes — will be messy, and protracted, and uncertain. And that will be a death sentence for any business that isn’t prepared for the long haul or is unable to adapt........... https://www.vulture.com/2020/05/movie-theaters-coronavirus.html

  8. Feds Arrest 'The Mask Man,' New York Pharmacist Accused Of Profiteering On N95 Masks A licensed pharmacist in New York bought up thousands of rare N95 masks and sold them at much higher prices during the COVID-19 pandemic, federal authorities said Tuesday, announcing the arrest of Richard Schirripa, a.k.a. "the Mask Man," on charges that include violating the Defense Production Act. Schirripa is accused of charging up to $25 per mask – often selling them out of his car. Schirripa is accused of buying about $200,000 worth of N95 masks between February and April and selling thousands of them "at severely inflated prices.......... Schirripa faces other serious but unrelated charges stemming from an earlier investigation into his pharmacy – especially the disposition of thousands of doses of strong opiates, including fentanyl, oxycodone and morphine sulfate, when he closed his business and sold its assets........ https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/05/26/862679629/feds-arrest-the-mask-man-new-york-pharmacist-accused-of-profiteering-on-n95-mask?utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com

  11. The Trump effect: New study connects white American intolerance and support for authoritarianism The research suggests that when intolerant white people fear democracy may benefit marginalized people, they abandon their commitment to democracy. ..............Black people, Asians, Native Americans and women were prevented from voting for significant stretches of American history. America's tradition of democracy (for some) exists alongside a tradition of authoritarianism (for some). The survey data doesn't show people rejecting American traditions, then, Miller says, so much as it shows "a preference for the sort of white-ethnocentrism that imbued much of the functional form of democracy for the better part of two centuries."........ In practice, the GOP has increasingly been embracing a politics of white resentment tied to disenfranchisement. "Since Richard Nixon's ‘Southern Strategy,’ the GOP has pigeon-holed itself as, in large part, an aggrieved white people's party," ........ When faced with a choice between bigotry and democracy, too many Americans are embracing the first while abandoning the second. "Social intolerance isn't just leading to GOP support as we know it and see it now," Miller says. "It's leading to preferences in favor of the kind of candidate the GOP ultimately nominated and supported for president." In embracing the politics of white identity, then, the GOP made a Trump possible — and is likely to make more Trump-like candidates successful in the future. 13. In Bolsonaro’s Brazil, Everyone Else Is to Blame for Virus- "With Brazil emerging as one of the world's most infected countries, President Jair Bolsonaro is deflecting all responsibility for the coronavirus crisis, casting blame on mayors, governors, an outgoing health minister and the media. By contrast, he portrays himself as a clear-eyed crusader willing to defend an unpopular idea — that shutting down the economy to control COVID-19 will ultimately cause more suffering than allowing the disease to run its course. The refusal of governors to fall into line with his decree allowing gyms to open, he said, verged on authoritarianism. Asked about Brazil's death toll surpassing China's, he feigned impotence: “I don't work miracles. What do you want me to do?” Confronted with a travel ban imposed on Brazil by the U.S. because of widespread COVID-19, one of his advisers called it press hysteria......... https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/coronavirus/bolsonaro-brazil-everyone-else-to-blame-coronavirus/2277750/?_osource=SocialFlowTwt_CHBrand -sound familiar??
  14. He thought the coronavirus was 'a fake crisis.' Then he contracted it and changed his mind. Brian Hitchens said he thought that the coronavirus "is a fake crisis" that was "blown out of proportion" and "wasn't that serious." ........Hitchens said he "had just enough energy" to drive himself and his wife to Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center on April 19, where they both tested positive for the virus. "They admitted us right away and we both went to ICU," he wrote. "I started feeling better within a few days but my wife got worse to the point where they sedated her and put her on the ventilator."............. "This thing is nothing to be messed with please listen to the authorities and heed the advice of the experts," he wrote. "We don't have to fear this and by heeding the advice doesn't mean that you fear it that means you're showing wisdom during this epidemic time.".......... https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/he-thought-coronavirus-was-fake-crisis-then-he-contracted-it-n1209246?cid=sm_npd_ms_tw_ma
  15. Memorial Day Observances Smaller, More Subdued During Pandemic Commemorations of fallen soldiers were canceled or toned down across the country. ".......The day looked different across the U.S. The 37,000 American flags traditionally placed on the Boston Common to honor Massachusetts military members who died in service were replaced with just 1,000 flags, to limit volunteers and onlookers. In Minneapolis, several bagpipers and drummers lined up outside the Minnesota Veterans Home and played as a parade of cars drove past. The city of Woodstock, Georgia, held its ceremony online. American Legion Post 316 Commander Julian Windham recognized service members who helped in the global fight against COVID-19. “Even when the enemy is an invisible virus or a microscopic germ, the sacrifices made are just as meaningful,” ................. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/memorial-day-observances-pandemi_n_5ecc40bac5b68dc5a015e46a?ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000067
  16. O'Hare Airport Couple Stays at O’Hare, on CTA Trains as They Struggle to Find Home Amid Pandemic ..........a couple who recently moved back to the Chicago-area is struggling to find one, as they say they’ve been living at O’Hare International Airport and on CTA Blue Line trains. The couple, Linda Benavides and her husband Manuel, say they’ve been living at O’Hare since April 16. They had moved to El Salvador more than 10 years ago, getting by on her Chicago teachers’ pension, but they say that after facing threats from the MS-13 gang in the country, they were forced to return to Chicago in April. Now, Linda says they’ve sought out shelters, but were told they would have to separate because of ongoing concerns about the coronavirus, and that’s not something she is willing to do....... https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/couple-stays-at-ohare-on-cta-trains-as-they-struggle-to-find-home-amid-pandemic/2277798/?_osource=SocialFlowTwt_CHBrand
  17. Missouri officials slam 'irresponsible and dangerous' behavior seen in images of Memorial Day crowds ........Department of Health and Senior Services Director Randall Williams released a statement Monday warning people that the coronavirus pandemic is not over. “This Memorial Day, we caution that COVID-19 is still here, and social distancing needs to continue to prevent further spread of infections,” he said. “Close contact with others even if you are in the outdoors is still considered close contact and can lead to more infections as we still have new cases of COVID-19 being detected each day in Missouri.” The comments come after videos and photos showed scores of people at the Lake of the Ozarks during the holiday weekend..... https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/499438-missouri-officials-slam-irresponsible-and-dangerous-behavior-seen-in?__twitter_impression=true
