  6. Senior US officials say there is widespread opposition within the Trump administration to targeting cultural sites in Iran ......"Nothing rallies people like the deliberate destruction of beloved cultural sites. Whether ISIS's destruction of religious monuments or the burning of the Leuven Library in WWI, history shows targeting locations giving civilization meaning is not only immoral but self-defeating," one of the officials told CNN. "The Persian people hold a deeply influential and beautiful history of poetry, logic, art and science. Iran's leaders do not live up to that history. But America would be better served by leaders who embrace Persian culture, not threaten to destroy it," they added. "Consistent with laws and norms of armed conflict, we would respect Iranian culture," the second senior US official said...... https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/05/politics/iranian-cultural-sites-us-strikes-donald-trump/index.html
  7. Michael Tracey @mtracey · 7h Now we’re being told that NONE of the millions of people publicly mourning Soleimani do so voluntarily and they all secretly like the fact that America assassinated their country’s top military commander who defended Iran and just defeated ISIS. The propaganda is getting dumber.
  8. Flouting War Powers Act, Trump claims his tweets are sufficient notice to Congress that U.S. may strike Iran - "........... The War Powers Act of 1973 mandates that the president report to lawmakers within 48 hours of introducing military forces into armed conflict abroad. Such notifications generally detail an administration’s justification for U.S. intervention, as well as the constitutional and legislative rationale used by the administration to send troops. It may also include how long the involvement could last. ....... “OMG, Trump thinks a crazed Tweet satisfies his War Powers Act obligations to Congress,” Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) tweeted. “Our President has taken us to the brink of war and is now vamping with no plan and no clue. Please, someone in the GOP, take the car keys - read the 25th Amendment.” ........ https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/flouting-war-powers-act-trump-claims-his-tweets-are-sufficient-notice-to-congress-that-us-may-strike-iran/2020/01/05/0953b740-2ffe-11ea-9313-6cba89b1b9fb_story.html?utm_campaign=wp_main&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

  10. Bracing for more fallout In an interview with NPR on Sunday, retired Gen. David Petraeus, the architect of the U.S. surge in Iraq, said, "It is impossible to overstate the importance" of the U.S. killing Soleimani. He added that the major question now is how Iran will retaliate — likely, he said, through the country's proxy forces. "Iran is not in the strongest of positions, given the sanctions, dismal economy and widespread Iranian popular unrest," Petraeus said. "I tend to think it is more likely that we will see a variety of proxy attacks," he said. "And Iran has a lot of proxies throughout the region, thanks to the efforts of Qassem Soleimani."...... https://www.npr.org/2020/01/05/793746580/iraqi-parliament-votes-to-expel-u-s-troops-from-country-in-wake-of-soleimani-str?utm_term=nprnews&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr

Qassem Soleimani. The Combined Joint Task Force for Operation Inherent Resolve, which is designed to stop ISIS expansion in Syria and Iraq, has stopped its mission to combat the terrorist group after repeated rocket attacks on coalition bases. “As a result we are now fully committed to protecting the Iraqi bases that host Coalition troops,” it said in a statement. “This has limited our capacity to conduct training with partners and to support their operations against Daesh and we have therefore paused these activities, subject to continuous review.” The statement went on to say that the coalition will remain “resolute as partners” with those in Iraq who requested help in stopping ISIS. ............. https://thehill.com/policy/international/middle-east-north-africa/476833-us-led-coalition-fighting-isis-suspends

  17. Pelosi Statement on White House’s War Powers Act Notification of Hostilities Against Iran - “This classified War Powers Act notification delivered to Congress raises more questions than it answers. This document prompts serious and urgent questions about the timing, manner and justification of the Administration’s decision to engage in hostilities against Iran. The highly unusual decision to classify this document in its entirety compounds our many concerns, and suggests that the Congress and the American people are being left in the dark about our national security. “The Trump Administration’s provocative, escalatory and disproportionate military engagement continues to put servicemembers, diplomats and citizens of America and our allies in danger. This initiation of hostilities was taken without an Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against Iran, without the consultation of the Congress and without the articulation of a clear and legitimate strategy to either the Congress or the public. “As Speaker of the House, I reiterate my call on the Administration for an immediate, comprehensive briefing of the full Congress on military engagement related to Iran and next steps under consideration. The Administration must work with the Congress to advance a bonafide de-escalatory strategy that prevents further violence.” https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/1420

  21. @BarackObama will attack Iran in the not too distant future because it will help him win the election," Trump tweeted on Nov. 14, 2011. Days later, he said, “Our president will start a war with Iran because he has absolutely no ability to negotiate. He's weak and he's ineffective. So the only way he figures that he's going to get reelected — and as sure as you're sitting there — is to start a war with Iran,” according to a video posted this week by a Washington Post video editor. "In order to get elected, @BarackObama will start a war with Iran," he followed up on Nov. 29, 2011. Nearly a year later, on Oct. 22, 2012, Trump repeated the same claim, writing, "Don't let Obama play the Iran card in order to start a war in order to get elected — be careful Republicans!"
