    R.I.P. Tom Petty (1951-2017)

    Tom Petty a rock classicist from the beginning -

     

    "Given the leather jacket and sneer Tom Petty wore on the cover of his 1976 debut, many people assumed he was one of those cheeky punks bent on tearing down the walls of rock ‘n’ roll.

    He wasn’t.

    It’s not that Petty and his band, the Heartbreakers, didn’t have their share of energy and attitude. But the kid from Gainesville, Florida, was a rock classicist to the core, and he built a body of work to stand with his heroes.

     

    That debut contained songs that stood the test of time, the snaky “Breakdown” and “American Girl,” which so echoed the Byrds that it confused that band’s leader. “When did I record that?” Roger McGuinn recalled thinking when he first heard it.

     

    Only a week before his death Tuesday night after suffering cardiac arrest, Petty and the Heartbreakers finished a triumphant 40th anniversary tour in his adopted Southern California home. His sturdy compositions built a discography so strong he couldn’t get to all of his hits. “The Waiting,” ″Listen to Her Heart,” ″Here Comes My Girl,” ″Refugee,” ″You Got Lucky,” ″Don’t Do Me Like That,” ″Even the Losers,” ″Don’t Come Around Here No More.” And so on.

    All are fist-pumping favorites........

    "Turner Classic Movies is proud to announce a multi-year programming initiative that aims to shine a spotlight on the historical contributions of women working in the film industry, to raise awareness of the current underrepresentation of women in positions of power within the business, and to promote resources that empower women to participate more fully in the industry.

    Every October through 2017, TCM’s substantial primetime “Spotlight” programming will feature films and hosts that address these issues directly. In October 2017, 25 film titles will be presented with introductions and conversations featuring series host Illeana Douglas and numerous co-hosts, including industry experts and contemporary writers, editors and producers (see “Schedule” for more details).

    No. (I'm watching the Emmys right now on cbs.com because the Cowboys game ran long last night). But the winners tend to mention the networks during their acceptance speeches.

     

    yeah, like WHO wants to listen to 2-3 min. of  "Thanks to my grandma, agent & catering folks w/the bestest coffee ever" Bla-blaa- bla just to find out.

    (and NO, I have no intention of 'googling' EACH nominee....life's too short)  :wacko:

     

    Besides wouldn't the producers actually WANT to promote viewership of their shows??

    Stephen King based his clown Pennywise on the real life horror clown Gacey who murdered young children.

     

    "The creature called IT is obviously not a clown at all. IT is an ancient evil being that is perhaps billions of years old, as old as the universe itself.
