  1. It will be interesting to see  Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool  when it is released in the USA in December. Apparently, it is about Grahame's later years in life.

Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool review – Annette Bening and Jamie Bell in stranger-than-fiction love story

    documentary

Synopsis: Documentary about the movie crew that went to Marfa, Texas in 1955 to film "the national movie of Texas."

    Dir: Jim Brennan
    Screenplay: Kirby Warnock
Cast: Don Henley (narrator), George Stevens Jr., Carroll Baker, Dennis Hopper, Earl Holliman

"Marfa never became a huge tourist draw but when Warnock visited it, years after the film had been made, the movie's ghost still haunted every corner of town.......Residents during the filming appear in the documentary, made forty years after Giant, and talk about their memories of that fateful year. The stories are both interesting and entertaining, funny and charming without reeking of sentimental desperation.

It's recounted how everyone knew Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor but no one had a clue who this James Dean character was....... Although none of his now famous movies had been released yet, it wasn't long before the townsfolk adopted Dean as their favorite of the entire cast....

(Chill Wills remarked, "These Actors' Studio kids are a weird bunch."),....

2:30 a.m.  Socrates (1971).  Possibly a premiere of this hard to catch Roberto Rossellini film?

not premiere @ MC's data

"...an underlying theme in all of his (Rossellini's) films, and his personal belief in the power of knowledge. With Socrates in particular, he felt a special affinity, and he had hoped to make a film about him for years. Although he joked that, like the Greek philosopher, he never made any money, his persecution over the marriage to Ingrid Bergman and the increasing difficulties he experienced finding financing in later years helped him identify with the persecution of a man eventually forced to commit suicide by a state that had little understanding of his lessons about the power of rationalism and the human conscience...

Rossellini also layers his viewpoint of Socrates, adding a symbolic element to the near-documentary depiction of the past........

...the leftist critics in Italy complained that the director had robbed the philosopher of his radical message. More recently, however, critics have begun a serious reappraisal of his work in this area, both as an extension of the Neorealism he had helped pioneer in his earlier films and as a new kind of minimalist cinema."

  4. "The National Film Board of Canada, known for its classy and artistic animated films, revealed a different side of itself today with the launch of Naked Island, a series of 14 micro-shorts that it describes as “public service alerts for a new era.”

The shorts, all of which can be seen on Vimeo, use animation and an ironic commercial format to make pithy comments on various aspects of contemporary society, from protesting to global warming to virtual reality....

Each filmmaker was given the freedom to address topics using their own style and voice, and the eclectic results brim with energy and vitality. The films are designed to provoke discussion, and some of them, like Protest, may offend more delicate viewers.

...There has always been a strong undercurrent of social issues addressed through satire in the government-run studio’s work, but now the NFB has combined it with an internet-friendly ultra-short format that allows its work to be discovered by a younger generation of viewers. I hope they continue down this path, and keep experimenting with animation in varying formats and lengths.

  5. Nickelodeon Started A Facebook Page To Premiere Never-Before-Seen Shorts-

"The studio quietly launched a Facebook page a few days ago where they’re sharing some recent productions. So far they’ve released four never-before-seen shorts on the page:.....

Nick also posted a sizzle reel (below) that hints at plenty of other shorts. It’s not clear how much they plan to drop onto the Facebook platform, but here’s hoping there’s more to come. Releasing content online is among the most efficient ways for entertainment conglomerates to gauge public reaction and learn what viewers actually like, not to mention cutting through the bureaucracy that often prevents the best ideas from rising to the top....

  7. Does anyone know why My Fair Lady was shown tonight? Was wondering the connection to the Motion Picture Home. Would think everyone connected to the film would be dead by now. I guess not. I thought about recording it, then forgot. (just to watch the wraparounds)

    Harold and Lillian was wonderful!

Agreed....showing these oft-aired classic chestnuts w/o explanation of connection to MPTF is bewildering

Xavier Atencio, Pinocchio, Fantasia creator and co-writer for lyrics to Pirates of the Caribbean ride theme song, also died today at 98.

"Atencio was a favorite of Walt Disney’s for his versatility as an animator, tunesmith, writer, and innovator who brought indelible touches to some of Disneyland’s best-loved attractions.

“X was an enormous talent who helped define so many of our best experiences around the world,” said Bob Weis, president of Walt Disney Imagineering.

“Some may not know that when he wrote the lyrics for ‘Yo Ho’ he had never actually written a song before. He simply proposed the idea of a tune for Pirates of the Caribbean, and Walt told him to go and do it. That was how X worked—with an enthusiastic, collaborative attitude, along with a great sense of humor.....

  9. FILM COMMENT:   RUBY GENTRY-

"...Ruby Gentry is a swampwater tragedy that contains memorable music in the form of folk singing (via Ruby’s unpleasant evangelical brother) and its classic score, composed by Heinz Roemheld, which would later become a standard when sung by Ray Charles with Mitchell Parish’s lyrics.

Vidor, always a director who excelled when close to the earth, gets at something authentically wild and vital in this blend of seaside noir and Southern-fried soap opera....

"Robust period adventure with Fairbanks a hearty D'Artagnan, Alexandre Dumas' swashbuckling hero who joins the King's Musketeers, becomes pals with Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, and battles evil in the court of Louis XIII. De Brulier almost steals the film as Cardinal Richelieu. Great fun!"
