tonight, 8-24 for SUTS: Dennis Morgan..... (times ET) 8:00 PM C - 95 m musical Desert Song, The (1944) Synopsis: An American soldier of fortune leads Arab bandits against the Nazis. Dir: Robert Florey Cast: Dennis Morgan , Irene Manning , Bruce Cabot . LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Robert Florey. Dennis Morgan, Irene Manning, Bruce Cabot, Lynne Overman, Gene Lockhart, Fay Emerson, Victor Francen, Curt Bois, Jack La Rue, Gerald Mohr. "Wrongheaded remake of the operetta updated to WW2. Riff leader El Khobar turns out to be an American (Morgan) who's fighting a Nazi-backed plan to build a railroad in the Moroccan desert. The much-loved score is downplayed in favor of newly written songs. In spite of Technicolor trappings this is a bad grade-B musical." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fri., 8-25 for SUTS: Simone Signoret..... 8:00 AM B/W - 98 m crime Casque d'Or (1952) Synopsis: When a gangster¿s moll falls for a reformed criminal, their passion incites an underworld rivalry that leads inexorably to treachery and tragedy. Dir: Jacques Becker Cast: Simone Signoret , Serge Reggiani , Claude Dauphin . LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Jacques Becker. Simone Signoret, Serge Reggiani, Claude Dauphin, Raymond Bussieres, William Sabatier, Gaston Modot. "Signoret is luminous as a seductive underworld beauty who inspires men to die for her love in this tale of rivalry and revenge among Parisian "apache'' gangsters in 1898. Much more than just a period crime yarn, this is one of the most physically beautiful and sensuous films ever made. Becker's poetic direction and Robert Le Febvre's shimmering photography are sheer perfection. Aka GOLDEN MARIE and GOLDEN HELMET." 10:00 AM B/W - 96 m war Against the Wind (1948) Synopsis: The British military send a team of saboteurs behind enemy lines during World War II. Dir: Charles Crichton Cast: Simone Signoret , LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Charles Crichton. Robert Beatty, Simone Signoret, Jack Warner, Gordon Jackson, Paul Dupuis, James Robertson Justice. "Taut, engrossing tale of British spies trained for mission inside occupied Belgium during WW2. Documentary-style training scenes complement the dramatic story of resistance fighters."

Fri., 8-18 for SUTS: Rod Taylor...... (times ET) 12:15 AM C - 90 m comedy Man Who Had Power Over Women, The (1970) Synopsis: A disenchanted talent agent falls for his best friend¿s wife. Dir: John Krish Cast: Rod Taylor , Carol White , James Booth . "Fundamentally, this is a sex comedy done in lively enough fashion. Then it strays into a more serious territory trying to show up the hollowness behind the tinselly pop world." http://variety.com/1969/film/reviews/the-man-who-had-power-over-women-1200422093/ 4:00 AM C - 105 m western Deadly Trackers, The (1973) Synopsis: A pacifist sheriff joins forces with a Mexican lawman to track a deadly bandit. Dir: Barry Shear Cast: Rod Taylor , Richard Harris , Al Lettieri . "Variety deemed it "a b.o. turkey for Thanksgiving" and the Los Angeles Times called it "the worst film released this year." with quite a back story...... See: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/24973/Deadly-Trackers-The/articles.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sat., 9-19 for SUTS: Angela Lansbury....... 12:30 AM B/W - 112 m drama Private Affairs of Bel Ami, The (1947) Synopsis: A man rises through Parisian society by using the women he romances. Dir: Albert Lewin Cast: George Sanders , Angela Lansbury , Ann Dvorak . LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Albert Lewin. George Sanders, Angela Lansbury, Ann Dvorak, Frances Dee, Albert Basserman, Warren William, John Carradine. "Delicious, literate adaptation (by Lewin) of Guy de Maupassant's "story of a rogue.'' Sanders, who gets ahead by using his charm on prominent women, denies himself the real love of Lansbury. Fine performances; beautifully photographed by Russell Metty." Death Takes No Holiday -- The Obituary Thread
mr6666 replied to Richard Kimble's topic in General Discussions
The man who first bought the beloved and feared monster Godzilla to life has died, the film company behind the monster says. Haruo Nakajima, who wore the Godzilla suit in 12 movies, died on Monday from pneumonia at the age of 88, it said. In an interview this year Nakajima explained how the original 1954 costume was created from ready-mixed concrete and weighed up to 100kg (220lbs)..... He first played Godzilla - a giant beast who emerges from the deep after a nuclear test - in the 1954 film entitled Godzilla directed by Ishiro Honda and produced by the famed Japanese film studio Toho. He went on to play the character in consecutive sequels as well as playing other beasts Rodan, Mothra and King Kong. His last outing in the suit was in the 1972 Godzilla vs. Gigan..... http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-40860365?ocid=socialflow_twitter -

-just a bump for TUES. -------------------------------------------- Tues., 8-8 for SUTS: Franchot Tone...... 12:15 PM B/W - 87 m comedy Wife Takes a Flyer, The (1942) Synopsis: A downed pilot enlists a Dutch girl to help him elude the Nazis. Dir: Richard Wallace Cast: Joan Bennett , Franchot Tone , Allyn Joslyn . LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Richard Wallace. Joan Bennett, Franchot Tone, Allyn Joslyn, Cecil Cunningham, Chester Clute. "Weak WW2 espionage comedy of Tone pretending to be Bennett's husband to escape from Holland." 1:45 PM B/W - 98 m drama Uncle Vanya (1958) Synopsis: Passions flare when a retired professor moves his young wife to the country estate he inherited from his first wife. Dir: John Goetz Cast: Mary Perry , Franchot Tone , George Voskovec . "Using his own money, actor Franchot Tone mounted this courageous film version of Anton Chekhov's UNCLE VANYA. The cast is the same as the one seen in Tone's stage production of 1956, with one exception: Signe Hassso, who'd played Elena on stage, is replaced by Tone's then-wife, Dolores Dorn-Heft. Translated by Stark Young, the screenplay follows the Chekhov original faithfully: Tone is cast as Dr. Astroff, who falls in love with a woman beyond his reach. All the while, Sonia (Peggy McCoy), the woman who loves Astroff, is neglected and ignored. The titular Uncle Vanya (George Voskovec) watches the passing parade of humanity, embittered over the opportunities missed in his own life. The sets are cardboard and the lighting inconsistent, but the acting in UNCLE VANYA is first rate. Completed in 1958, the film did not receive a general release until 1960." http://www.oldies.com/product-view/7946FD.html

Sun., 8-6 for SUTS: Robert Mitchum....... (times ET) 7:30 AM B/W - 67 m suspense When Strangers Marry (1944) Synopsis: After a whirlwind romance, a small-town girl suspects she's married a murderer. Dir: William Castle Cast: Dean Jagger , Kim Hunter , Robert Mitchum . LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: William Castle. Robert Mitchum, Kim Hunter, Dean Jagger, Neil Hamilton, Lou Lubin, Milton Kibbee. "Cleverly directed film noir about sweet, innocent Hunter, whose new husband (Jagger) just may be a murderer. Mitchum, as her ex-boyfriend, exudes his trademark cool in his first important role. As good a B picture as you'll ever find. Reissued as BETRAYED." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tues., 8-8 for SUTS: Franchot Tone...... 12:15 PM B/W - 87 m comedy Wife Takes a Flyer, The (1942) Synopsis: A downed pilot enlists a Dutch girl to help him elude the Nazis. Loved it! well-made noirish morality play a la "......Daniel Webster" Fine direction by John Farrow with terrific cast! one question- at one point preacher mentions thinking he's see a portrait or rendering which resembles Nick Beal. Beal answers there was one by Rembrandt in 1665. Kinda thought this'd come up later, with a shot of painting. but it did not. Tried 'googling' Rembrandt 1665 & couldn't find anything relevant. ANY Art Aficionados out there who can help?? (BTW good article here: https://makeminecriterion.wordpress.com/2014/10/21/alias-nick-beal-john-farrow-1949/)

Interesting only for early looks at Monroe and future TV host Paar." Dir: John Farrow Cast: Ray Milland , Audrey Totter , Thomas Mitchell . LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: John Farrow. Ray Milland, Audrey Totter, Thomas Mitchell, George Macready, Fred Clark. "Allegory of Devil (Milland) corrupting honest politician Mitchell with help of trollop Totter. Interesting drama with unusually sinister Milland."

late tonight, 7-30 for TCM Imports..... (times ET) 2:00 AM B/W - 141 m drama Tokyo Twilight (1957) Synopsis: Two sisters reunite with the mother they thought dead. Dir: Yasujiro Ozu Cast: Setsuko Hara , Ineko Arima , Chishu Ryu . "This turbulent and grim family melodrama, from 1957, is steered away from the maudlin and given emotional depth and philosophical heft under the direction of Yasujiro Ozu." article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Twilight 4:30 AM B/W - 72 m drama Record of a Tenement Gentleman (1947) Synopsis: A widow reluctantly takes in an abandoned boy. Dir: Yasujiro Ozu Cast: Choko Iida , Hohi Aoki , Eitaro Ozawa . "...depicts the chaos of urban life and the harsh realities of a country defeated in war, but his aim was never truly sociological. This relatively obscure film, rarely seen outside of Japan, is a worthy introduction to his masterful portraits of family life and relationships observed with Ozu's characteristic gentle humor and abundant sense of humanity."
