HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

this PM, anyone catch Mann's dark gem Border Incident ('49) w Montalban, George Murphy, Chrls. MaGraw, Howard DeSilva & (non-dancing) James Mitchell? "Border Incident (1949) is a perfect example. A dark, gripping film noir about illegal immigration on the Mexican border, the picture doesn't overly concern itself with politics. Instead, it depicts the plight of the immigrants, the ruthless cruelty of the smugglers, and the crime genre dramatics of the agents assigned to infiltrate the smuggling ring and bring it down." http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/69381/Border-Incident/articles.html -
Wed., 7-5 for TCM Spotlight: 50 Years of Hitchcock..... 9:45 PM (ET) B/W - 110 m silent Downhill (1927) Synopsis: After being blamed for a friend's misbehavior, an expelled schoolboy sees his life fall apart. Dir: Alfred Hitchcock Cast: Ivor Novello , Ben Webster , Norman McKinnel . Article: https://the.hitchcock.zone/wiki/Downhill_(1927) LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Alfred Hitchcock. Ivor Novello, Ben Webster, Robin Irvine, Sybil Rhoda, Lillian Braithwaite, Isabel Jeans, Ian Hunter. "Schematic silent film charts a man's spiritual slide beginning when, as a schoolboy, he is disowned by his family after an indiscretion with a girl, and later as an adult when his wife fritters away his unexpected inheritance. Major debit: the contrived happy ending. Lesser Hitchcock boasts the master's visual flair. Cowritten by Novello."

It's also a peripatetic visit with researchers, scholars, and archivists, some real and some imaginary. "-Re "Love Among the Ruins" (2015); Yes, the article for the film specifically says it's not the 1975 television movie with Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier." article: http://www.tcm.com/this-month/article/1330745%7C0/Silent-Sunday-Nights-in-July.html "the 2015 production Love Among the Ruins - also known by its Italian title, Amore tra le rovine, and unrelated to George Cukor's eponymous 1975 picture, or to the Evelyn Waugh novel or the Mad Men episode of that name - manages to be three movies at once. First and foremost, it's a faux documentary. It's also a peripatetic visit with researchers, scholars, and archivists, some real and some imaginary. And for its second half, it's a silent film that looks reasonably ancient even though it was made in the 21st century.... -
tried to give it a go, but TOTALLY understand why it was a flop and the critics hated it.... Caan giving a good try at portraying total ***hole 'hero' as sympathetic just didn't click. Yeah, and I get the attempt at jabs to American culture, but not enough to pull this turkey out of the ash can. Phooey

Dir: Jean-Luc Godard Cast: Mireille Darc , Jean Yanne , "...is largely known today to film students and foreign film buffs for its legendary, astonishingly protracted single take through the worst traffic jam in film history. However, there's plenty more to surprise and engage in this acerbic portrayal of a society on its last legs - a feeling that wasn't exactly out of place during the turbulent era in which the film was released."
