  1. thanks lavender - despite the successful, eye-pleasing outcome of a challenging shoot, the film was a box office failure that led to Transatlantic's demise, and the director's pleasure at snagging "the biggest star of the day" was quickly overshadowed by the actress' scandalous affair with a foreign director. -film?
  2. uuuuh, Anacrophobia ? (clue fishing)
  3. thanks, starlite try..... This film contains all the elements of a great gangster story. It is a perfect example of 1930's big city gangster films. Yet it does not fall into a stereotypical mold at all. It is entertaining throughout. Just when you think it is going one way, it goes the other, building the suspense and irony until you realize it is not going to be a typical story. All the players keep in character and hold your attention with crisp and refreshing dialogue. ______ and ___ are so in tune with one another, and you do not get the feeling they are acting.

  5. airs Sun., 9-28, for Director Whit Stillman: 8:00 pm ET C- 99 min comedy Metropolitan (1990) A group of friends from New York's haute-bourgeoisie gather together during the holiday season. Dir: Whit Stillman Cast: Carolyn Farina , Edward Clements , Taylor Nichols . ARTICLE: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/83370/Metropolitan/articles.html "Stillman has made a film Scott Fitzgerald might have been comfortable with, a film about people covering their own insecurities with a facade of social ease. And he has written wonderful dialogue, words in which the characters discuss ideas and feelings instead of simply marching through plot points as most Hollywood characters do." 10:00 pm ET C- 102 min comedy Barcelona (1994) An American businessman living in Spain and his naval officer cousin discuss women and their home country. Dir: Whit Stillman Cast: Taylor Nichols , Chris Eigeman , Tushka Bergen . ARTICLE: ww.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/18570/Barcelona/articles.html "the film's most singular achievement is the portrayal of the manifold ways -- from subtle to overt -- in which anti-American sentiments were vented overseas during a certain period in the '70s and '80s."
  6. airs Sun., 9-28 2:30 am ET C- 106 min drama Claire's Knee (1970) PREMIERE On holiday, a conflicted man lusts after beautiful stepsisters despite his betrothal to a diplomat's daughter. Dir: Eric Rohmer Cast: Jean-Claude Brialy , Aurora Cornu , Beatrice Romand . ARTICLE: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/71022/Claire-s-Knee/articles.html "Rohmer's depiction of a constellation of vivid, unique female characters has always been one of his strongest points, and it serves him especially well here with a film ostensibly about a man's plan to conquer a young girl but actually about so much more."
  7. airs Sun., 9-28 12:00 am ET 137 min silent Merry Widow, The (1925) In this silent film, a European nobleman courts the wealthy American widow he once loved to save his bankrupt homeland, Dir: Erich von Stroheim Cast: Mae Murray , John Gilbert , Roy D'Arcy . LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Erich von Stroheim. Mae Murray, John Gilbert, Roy D'Arcy, Tully Marshall, Josephine Crowell. "A playboy prince (Gilbert) falls in love with an American showgirl (Murray). Lavish, well-produced silent version of the Franz Lehar operetta is probably von Stroheim's most "normal'' film, though he still manages to inject his usual bizarre touches (including a character with a foot fetish). See if you can spot young Clark Gable as an extra. Remade twice."
  8. I caught that too, but saw a bigger vibe of the same sort in yesterday's viewing of Little Caesar. How come no women in Rico's life? And he did declare how he was sorry for his 'love' of Fairbanks. Again, we're probably reading too much modern sensibilites into movies from the 30s....maybe
  9. or the scene where he disdainfully drops the ex- babe's dog in the waste can! ;0
  10. 1st thought.... Penny Serenade (1941) ??
  11. they often use her film Three On A Match ('32) as an example of pre-code films.... Article: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/2179/Three-on-a-Match/articles.html
  12. "EE" one of my fav pre-codes! WW is wonderfully rotten, AND comes out on top in the end! just like Harlow in "Red Headed Woman". So few of these, and always alot of fun'
  13. now THAT was a good'un! thanks for head's up Raw Deal (1948) When the gangster for whom he took the rap welches, a convict breaks out of prison to get revenge. Dir: Anthony Mann Cast: Dennis O'Keefe , Claire Trevor , Marsha Hunt . LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Anthony Mann. Dennis O'Keefe, Claire Trevor, Marsha Hunt, Raymond Burr, John Ireland. "Beautifully made, hard-boiled story of O'Keefe escaping from jail and taking out revenge on slimy Burr, who framed him; what's more, he gets caught between love of two women. Tough and convincing, with Burr a sadistic heavy."
  14. vague guess...How to Murder Your Wife ??

Dir: Neal Slavin Cast: William H. Macy , Laura Dern , David Paymer . "based on a novel by Arthur Miller, which he says was written during a period of disillusionment with the stage; angered by American anti-Semitism even during the war against Hitler, he wrote it in a white heat. It's a didactic warning that it can happen here." ARTICLE: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/451674/Focus/articles.html "The problem in all societies throughout history, the opening for all prejudice, is that we don't look at all. We look away, or at our prejudices, or we allow the worst among us to look on our behalf, and accept their reports."

Cast: Brigitte Bardot , Daniel Gelin LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Marc Allegret. Daniel Gelin, Brigitte Bardot, Robert Hirsch, Darry Cowl. "Low-brow THEODORA GOES WILD variation, following Bardot's plight after she pens an anonymous, scandalous book. Scripted by Allegret and Roger Vadim. Aka MADEMOISELLE STRIPTEASE and PLUCKING THE DAISY." 1:30 am ET C- 91 min crime Night Heaven Fell, The (1958) A convent girl vacationing in Spain finds herself in a romance with a murderer. Dir: Roger Vadim Cast: Brigitte Bardot , Alida Valli , Stephen Boyd . LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Roger Vadim. Brigitte Bardot, Alida Valli, Stephen Boyd, Pepe Nieto. To this day, they are some of the greatest works of art to deal with the desolation of the soul and the rejuvenation of the spirit. The Music Room is one of his best."
