  1. What producer of a notorious 60s film had filled it largely with actors he represented, so that he would get an agent's commission along with his share of any profits? Eventually, the Screen Actors Guild would forbid agents to produce while still actively representing talent, a rule largely inspired by the producer's behavior.
  2. airs late Sun., 9-14 2:00 am ET 105 min drama Il Sorpasso (1961) PREMIERE A shy law student meets a bon vivant who takes him for a drive through the Roman and Tuscan countryside. Dir: Dino Risi Cast: Vittorio Gassman , Jean-Louis Trintignant , Catherine Spaak . "For a good part of its running time, a contemporary (and ostensibly non-Italian) viewer might not be sure of how to take the film - its comedy is mild and circumstantial, and the social-critique subtext that gives the movie bite could be missed by anyone not familiar with Italian road culture and the social stress it produces." Dir: Federico Fellini Cast: Federico Fellini , Peter Gonzales , Stefano Mayore . "...building a narrative that has a city for its protagonist instead of a single character. The only sly thing is that the city isn't Rome - it's Fellini, disguised in bricks, mortar, and ruins."

  5. The lyrics of I Went to a Marvellous Party are a first-person description of five parties attended by the singer on the French Riviera. Noël Coward composed this song after he and Beatrice Lillie attended a beach party given by Elsa Maxwell in the south of France. The song appeared in the David Niven film Better Late Than Never (1982), in which Niven appeared as an aging cabaret artiste performing to an indifferent French Riviera audience.

  11. Tonight under Beatrice Lillie: 8:00 pm ET 80 min comedy On Approval (1944) Two wealthy Victorian widows are courted tentatively by two impoverished British aristocrats. Dir: Clive Brook Cast: Clive Brook , Beatrice Lillie , Googie Withers . LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Clive Brook. Beatrice Lillie, Clive Brook, Googie Withers, Roland Culver. "Minor British gem showcasing the hilarious Bea Lillie as woman who decides to give her prospective husband a trial run, with unexpected results. Drawing-room comedy par excellence. Leading-man Brook also directed, produced, and co-wrote script (from Frederick Lonsdale's play)--the only time he ever worked behind the camera!" 13. House of Women, a ridiculous plot, but fun over-the-top Warner melodrama:
  14. thanks starlite next: (the director) through film, and (composer) through his haunting musical score did a magnificent job of recreating a world that has all but disappeared. A time when family was the center of our lives, children respected the adults and were expected to behave in a civilized manner, people didn't spend Sundays running all over town to football, soccer games etc, and the elder members of the family were revered instead of ignored or worse, placed in a home. ????
  15. 1st thought was San Francisco (1936) ?
  16. hey Edythe, any hints here....??
  17. airs Sun., 9-7 2:00 am ET 121 min war Battle of Algiers, The (1966) Algiers revolts against the French Foreign Legion. Dir: Gillo Pontecorvo Cast: Jean Martin , Yacef Saadi , Brahim Haggiag . ARTICLE: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/68197/Battle-of-Algiers-The/articles.html
  18. airs Sun., 9-7 12:00 am ET 78 min drama Within Our Gates (1920) In this silent film, a black schoolteacher finds the battle against racism is everywhere when she goes North to raise money for better schools. Dir: Oscar Micheaux Cast: Evelyn Preer , Flo Clements , James D. Ruffin . LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Oscar Micheaux. Evelyn Preer, Flo Clements, James D. Ruffin, Jack Chenault, William Smith, Charles D. Lucas. "Controversial, no-holds-barred racial drama, which, along with Micheaux's THE SYMBOL OF THE UNCONQUERED, counterpoints Griffith's THE BIRTH OF A NATION. Story focuses on light-skinned Preer's various entanglements and efforts to raise money for an all-black school. Despite the melodramatic and sometimes confusing narrative, Micheaux pointedly lambastes not only white racism but blacks who forsake their roots. The lynching scenes are undeniably powerful. Restored from a print found in Spain, with one sequence missing."
  19. if you've got one, starlite, go ahead....
