  3. Michael McFaul @McFaul · 5h According to reporting including @MeetThePress , Trump called Putin 6 times in 2 months - March 30th, April 9th, April 10th, April 12, May 7th, June 1 ! That would be a crazy number of calls to any foreign leader. But to Putin? What on earth were they discussing? So strange.
  4. Laurence Tribe @tribelaw · 11h Trump said, “In the fields and jungles of Vietnam, they delivered a swift and swiffian, It was swift and it was sweeping like nobody’s ever seen happen. A victory in Operation Desert Storm, a lot of you were involved in that. A lot of you were involved. That was a quick one.” OMG

  7. ".......Libertarian writer David Boaz argued that terms left and right are used to spin a particular point of view rather than as simple descriptors, with those on the "left" typically emphasizing their support for working people and accusing the right of supporting the interests of the upper class; and those on the "right" usually emphasizing their support for individualism and accusing the Left of supporting collectivism[citation needed] Boaz asserts that arguments about the way the words should be used often displaces arguments about policy by raising emotional prejudice against a preconceived notion of what the terms mean.[57] In 2006, British Prime Minister Tony Blair described the main cleavage in politics as not left versus right, but open versus closed.[58] In this model, attitudes towards social issues and globalism are more important than the conventional economic left–right issues: "open" voters tend to be socially liberal, multicultural and in favour of globalism, while "closed" voters are culturally conservative, opposed to immigration and in favour of protectionism. This model has seen increased support following the rise of populist and centrist parties in the 2010s.......... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left–right_political_spectrum#Contemporary_usage_in_the_United_States - just to confuse us even more

  9. American pride falls to record low, new poll shows ".............While most people still say they are proud to be Americans, this marks the second straight year that the number of extremely proud Americans fell below the majority level. Results held relatively steady for years — between 81% and 92% — before sharply falling in 2017 to 75% during President Trump's first year in office........ Americans said they are least proud of the country's political system and health and welfare system. "Record-low American patriotism is the latest casualty of the sharply polarized political climate in the U.S. today," Gallup said....... https://www.cbsnews.com/news/american-pride-falls-to-record-low/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab7e&linkId=92851552

  12. Richard N. Haass @RichardHaass · 11h My thought on this July 4th is that the day has taken on a deeper meaning. In the past it was a time for family, friends & fun more than politics. This year there is a palpable sense that our democracy needs to be defended rather than just celebrated, much less taken for granted.
  13. Schooley @Rschooley It's literally incredible that Trump has lost at least 10 points in polling because of his handling of Covid and protests and yet he continues to make the absolute worst choices in regards to both.

  15. New Study Finds Spikes In Coronavirus Cases Linked To In-Person Restaurant Dining ".........analyzed 30 million Chase credit and debit cardholder’s spending habits and compared it to coronavirus data from Johns Hopkins University, and found that spending patterns in restaurants “have some power in predicting where the virus has spread since then,” said analyst Jesse Edgerton. The study found that the “level of spending in restaurants three weeks ago was the strongest predictor of the rise in new virus cases over the subsequent three weeks.” The financial firm also found similar patterns with supermarket spending, but grocery store shopping was correlated to a slower spread of coronavirus. ........ https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/study-finds-spikes-coronavirus-cases-161559634.html
  16. late Sun., 7-5 for TCM Imports.......... 2:00 AM (ET) B/W - 142 m Paris Belongs to Us (1961) Synopsis: A young French girl becomes embroiled with some young Spaniards, who fear for their lives in regards to an organization out to get them because of a supposed involvement in a conspiracy. Dir: Jacques Rivette Cast: Betty Schneider , Giani Esposito , Françoise Prévost Film Critic Jonathan Rosenbaum liked the film: "Jacques Rivette’s troubled and troubling 1960 account of Parisians in the late 50s remains the most intellectually and philosophically mature, and one of the most beautiful.... Few films have more effectively captured a period and milieu; Rivette evokes bohemian paranoia and sleepless nights in tiny one-room flats, along with the fragrant, youthful idealism conveyed by the film’s title". .............. see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Belongs_to_Us

  20. These are true patriots. Trump sees them as enemies Opinion by Sen. Tammy Duckworth "Marching and chanting, grieving and kneeling, countless Americans have braved tear gas and rubber bullets over the past six weeks to send an unequivocal message to their elected leaders: that they will not stand idly by as racial injustice continues to tear at our country. In this moment of national reckoning, and as we celebrate Independence Day this weekend, I can think of nothing more patriotic. These citizens understand that doing the tireless, often thankless work necessary to effect change is what American patriotism has always been about. Yet sadly, that fundamental understanding seems to be beyond the American president........ used this moment to conflate patriotism with nationalism and democracy with autocracy, working to undermine the rule of law to serve his own interests. The last few weeks have been a microcosm of his entire term, with him manipulating the levers of the presidency to try to silence those who oppose him, from the firing of tear gas to the firing of government officials who refuse to fall in line. Not seeming—or caring—to know the difference between president and tinpot dictator, he's worked to pervert what our military stands for, showing an alarming kinship to a certain former leader who, when also faced with growing unrest, treated those protesting as traitors, threatening to use their own military against them......... Our nation exists because a group of citizens from a ragtag bunch of colonies refused to stay silent when they saw a wrong that needed to be righted. America was born out of an act of resistance, and America has become more American with every peaceful protest since,.......... So on this Fourth of July, let's remember that fighting back against injustice isn't just the right thing to do, it's the most American act imaginable. Our nation was founded by a group of patriots who refused to blindly follow their leader—and 244 Independence Days later, it's only by continuing to speak truth to power that, someday soon, we may all live free in that more perfect union envisioned by our founders.
