  1. Oscar Animated Shorts Nominees: How Each Film Was Developed Narratively

    By Alex Dudok de Wit | 01/28/2020 6:39 pm | 0

Outwardly eclectic, the five animated shorts up for this year’s Oscar actually make for the most complementary set of nominees in some time.

In different media and from different angles, they all examine a two-way relationship with great feeling. .................

Synopsis:  the Shoah films are not about survival, but about death and horror on a cosmic scale, a scale we do not see but are forced to imagine, by way of the aging, weary, tremulous witnesses.

CastRuth Elias , Paula Biren , Claude Lanzmann .

"....... Four Sisters is a quartet of such interviews, ...... the stories are similar, as you'd imagine: invasion, harassment, transport, camp life, the cunning fight for survival as you watch family and friends vanish on the trains or up in smoke, the emotional toll on staying alive as so many die. ........

This is a film project that's bigger than cinema, more vital than culture, burning with its own moral, existential necessity. .......

Synopsis:  takes place in 1957 Vienna where a concentration camp survivor (Charlotte Rampling) is accidentally reunited with the SS officer (Dirk Bogarde) who was her torturer, protector and partner in a sadomasochistic relationship. He is now working the night shift in a fancy hotel and a reluctant member of a group of ex-SS seeking to hide their pasts by destroying documents and killing any possible witnesses to their war crimes. The two rekindle their twisted relationship in the porter's apartment until the Nazi cabal forces them into the open

DirLiliana Cavani CastDirk Bogarde , Charlotte Rampling , Philippe Leroy-Beaulieu .

"..... "The Night Porter is a provocative and problematic film."

This mid-'70s picture fits pretty neatly into the pejorative category of what many have called "Nazi chic" or what critic Pauline Kael dubbed "Come-Dressed-as-the-Sick-Soul-of-Europe parties." Indeed, as Insdorf points out, "it can be seen as an exercise in perversion and exploitation of the Holocaust for the sake of sensationalism." Reviewers at the time of the film's release were not so restrained, calling it "as nasty as it is lubricious...despicable" (Roger Ebert); "a piece of junk...romantic pornography" (Vincent Canby); and from Kael herself, "humanly and aesthetically offensive," granting it a dubious feminist distinction in proving that "women can make junk just like men." ...........

    Come and See (1985)

Synopsis:  Aleksey Kravchenko plays a Belarussian teenager who longs to join the partisans fighting the Nazi invasion of the USSR in 1943. When he digs up a buried rifle, word spreads and the partisans recruit him, ....... is separated from his unit and returns home, he finds his family slaughtered. He continues to witness Nazi atrocities as he serves, ........

DirElem Klimov CastAleksei Kravchenko , Liubomiras Laucevicius , Olga Mironova .

"...... J. Hoberman of The Village Voice called it "a robust art film with aspirations to the visionary....For the most part, [Klimov] prefers to show the Gorgon as reflected in Perseus's shield. There are few images more indelible than the sight of young [Aleksey] Kravchenko's fear-petrified expression." One unsolicited rave came from a German veteran who saw the film and deemed it a highly accurate representation of what his unit had done in the USSR during World War II. The film won the FIPRESCI Prize and the Golden Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival. ......

the film's reputation has grown over the years. In 2010, Roger Ebert listed it among the great movies, calling it "one of the most devastating films ever made about anything." Writing in The Guardian, Tim Lott said the picture "makes Apocalypse Now look lightweight." ........

    Synopsis:
DirCyril Endfield CastFrank Lovejoy , Kathleen Ryan , Richard Carlson .

Film critic Dennis Schwartz liked the film and discussed the political and social aspects of the film. He wrote, "Endfield's social consciousness film hits hard at uncontrolled violence in small-town America in much the same way as did Fritz Lang's Fury (also based on the same factual episode). Soon after making this film, the director was blacklisted because of his leftist positions on social and political issues. It's a superb characterization of America's thirst for crime and violence; one of the most powerful statements ever from a Hollywood film about the class divide in America and the yellow rag press that incites the public with poisonous newspaper coverage to sell papers. It calls attention to something about the 'cowboy attitude' in Americans that they don't like to acknowledge about themselves, but Europeans are quite aware of ..........."

    LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

😧 Cyril Endfield. Frank Lovejoy, Kathleen Ryan, Richard Carlson, Lloyd Bridges, Katherine Locke, Adele Jergens, Renzo Cesara.

Husband and father Lovejoy can't find a job, so he reluctantly helps slick Bridges in a series of robberies . . . but he isn't prepared for kidnapping and murder. Very impressive independent film noir indicts yellow journalism and lynch-mob violence, but doesn't let the criminals off the hook. Based on a true story that took place in California during the 1930s. Deserves to be better known. Originally shown as THE SOUND OF FURY.

DirDick Richards CastRobert Mitchum , Charlotte Rampling , John Ireland .

"...... Roger Ebert gave it four stars saying "Farewell, My Lovely never steps wrong." Most of the praise went to Mitchum and Miles. A New York Times review noted "Silvia Miles plays a role that seems an overdone clich until you realize that she is doing it with such subtlety that her lost beauty keeps flickering back"; "Robert Mitchum always takes getting to know in a role... But he settles into his part, his performance drops away and he moves through the picture with force, humor and unexpected humility." .....

    Scary Movie (1991)

Synopsis:  we find our protagonist, the gangly, buttoned-up Warren (no last name given, simply "Warren" and played by John Hawkes) waiting with ever-growing terror to enter the house of horrors. The townspeople wear fake masks, outrageous costumes and garish makeup. Warren trembles in khaki pants and a collared shirt buttoned to the neck. As people laugh and joke, he sweats and shakes. This is his personal hell.

    DirDaniel Erickson CastJohn Hawkes ,

".... This is an ode to Halloween in a small country town, a Ray Bradbury-esque setting of wind blowing through the leaves and the moon shining on pitch-black nights. Anyone who remembers the horror of the annual haunted house will recall the anticipation of waiting in line, the anxiety of wondering what lies inside. The cinematography lends a helping hand, too, painting blacks in a frightening opaqueness of onyx and indigo and bringing out the bright orange of pumpkins off the vine.

The couple encounter racism and their relationship is tested by Duff's family dysfunction: he has an absent dad and neglects his own son from a previous relationship. This moving film has the boldness and simplicity of a real master. .......

The performances are so fresh and natural – yet so subtle and delicately judged. The direction is superb in its control and the cinematography creates a gripping docu-realist vision. Why has this passionate and involving love story been relatively overlooked? ........

Synopsis: A small-town newspaper editor defies threats to expose the mob.
DirRobert Wise CastJohn Forsythe , Joan Camden , Harold J. Kennedy .

" The Captive City effectively skirts the line between film noir and documentary, making it a difficult movie to categorize. Certainly the visual mood created by lurking shadows and murky street lamps lends a noir-ish feel to the flick, while the intro and outro footage of Kefauver frame the story within a realistic context. .......

    LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

😧 Robert Wise. John Forsythe, Joan Camden, Harold J. Kennedy, Marjorie Crosland, Victor Sutherland, Ray Teal, Martin Milner.

Small-city newspaper editor Forsythe gradually learns that the Mafia has taken over bookie operations formerly run by corrupt local businessmen. Based-on-fact drama is earnest and intelligent, with fine noir-style photography by Lee Garmes. Sen. Estes Kefauver provides an afterword.

  10. 'Dolittle': What the Critics Are Saying

"........Newsday's Rafer Guzman ...... calling the film "elaborately staged but charmless." Guzman also took issue with Downey's portrayal of Dr. Dolittle, explaining, "As for Downey, his Dolittle is one weird creation — not in an inspired, Gene-Wilder-as-Willie-Wonka way, but in a baffling, Johnny-Depp-as-Mortdecai way. He's a bit of this, a bit of that: a fun-loving kook and surly recluse in a tie-dyed vest. For some reason, Downey has also made the character Welsh, a nationality that, to my American mind, conjures up absolutely nothing. Did Downey just want to have a challenging accent? And is that why all his lines seem to have been re-dubbed? He's the only actor in the film whose tone and volume never vary from a low, close mumble."

The Chicago Sun-Times' Richard Roeper went as far as to brand Dolittle "the first serious contender for Wasted Opportunity of the Decade." Roeper elaborated, "The adventures at sea and on the islands play out like low-rent, animal-centric scenes from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. By the time the doc endures massive dragon flatulence while performing emergency surgery on the fire-breathing creature, Dolittle has solidified its standing as a spectacularly terrible multi-vehicle pileup."...........

The Guardian's Benjamin Lee first revisits the checkered history of the film's postproduction schedule, which included reshoots and missed release dates, noting that he "doesn't much care for the end product, but it's not as hideous as that potted history might suggest, an average film rather than an atrocious one, a minuscule yet meaningful victory for Universal, still licking its wounds after Cats." The critic goes on to give the opinion that the animals are "far less nightmarish" [than those in Cats], while the film is "less memorable." Speaking to the plot, which he describes in his review as "convoluted" and "silly," ..........

Unfortunately, American audiences did not see this original version of Leone's film, but instead a drastically edited 139-minute cut carried out by The Ladd Company (the American distributors for the film), which not only removed 90 minutes, but also inexplicably and recklessly took artistic license by rearranging scenes into chronological order--all without Leone's consent and input.
