Rotten Tomatoes’ new policy of not letting users review and rate unreleased movies

comes after a targeted online campaign against “Captain Marvel,” @davidlsims writes.

    ==========================================

A Change for Rotten Tomatoes Ahead of Captain Marvel

The review-aggregating site has stopped allowing users to rate unreleased movies. Will the decision be enough to stem bad-faith attacks on certain films?

Captain Marvel hasn’t hit theaters, yet it garnered a dismal audience score of 54 percent—far below the totals for other recent Marvel movies. The poor grade is the result of “review bombing,” a practice that’s also widespread in the highly charged world of video gaming. Different groups organize campaigns to drag down the audience rating for a film (or a game) in response to a particular controversy, sometimes for sexist or racist reasons. Many culture writers noted that Captain Marvel, in particular, was likely being targeted for featuring a female hero. .....

Rotten Tomatoes said in a statement on the site. “Don’t worry though, fans will still get to have their say: Once a movie is released, audiences can leave a user rating and comments as they always have.”

The site has also said that Captain Marvel wasn’t the explicit reason for the change, which was reportedly part of a long-term strategy.

Captain Marvel wasn’t the only film under attack.....

    King of Jazz (1930)

    Synopsis:
DirJohn Murray Anderson CastPaul Whiteman , John Boles , Laura La Plante .

" The first surprise about King of Jazz (1930) is that it doesn't contain much of the music usually called jazz. The title refers to Paul Whiteman, a hugely popular bandleader whose "symphonic jazz" involved juicing up pop songs and light classics with syncopated rhythms, sprightly performances, and technical wizardry. .......

the film's regrettably closed-off view of where jazz actually came from: every musician is white and the overall vision is Eurocentric in the extreme. King of Jazz is both a dazzling musical revue and a vivid reminder of the racial and ethnic tunnel vision that has long afflicted American culture. "

    LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

😧 John Murray Anderson. Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, John Boles, Jeanette Loff, The Rhythm Boys (Bing Crosby, Al Rinker, Harry Barris).

"Million-dollar musical revue, shot in two-color Technicolor process, is filled with larger-than-life production numbers and wonderful songs. Highlights include Walter Lantz's cartoon sequence, Joe Venuti's swing violin, young Bing Crosby with the Rhythm Boys, and, of course, Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue'' (which in early Technicolor is more a rhapsody in turquoise).

Uneven, to be sure, but a lot of fun. Originally released at 105m.

  3. Steven Spielberg to Express Netflix Oscar Concerns at Upcoming Academy Meeting

".......in the wake of three Oscar wins for Netflix’s Roma, including Best Director, Spielberg is prepared to propose a rule change that would rule Netflix films ineligible at an upcoming Academy Board of Governors meeting (he represents the Directors branch on the board). The news comes courtesy of Indiewire, though it’s unclear specifically what rules Spielberg would propose to be changed, and whether Netflix increasing the length of a theatrical window ahead of a streaming release would ease his concerns.

    roma-alfonso-cuaron

    Image via Netflix

A spokesman for Amblin had this to say:

“Steven feels strongly about the difference between the streaming and theatrical situation. He’ll be happy if the others will join [his campaign] when that comes up [at the Academy Board of Governors meeting]. He will see what happens.”

This puts Spielberg in direct conflict with his friend and fellow filmmaker Martin Scorsese, whose new film The Irishman will debut on Netflix later this year. The streaming service has already committed to a theatrical release for the film, but Scorsese reportedly wants them to give the film a wide release. That poses a challenge. Roma was released in theaters three weeks before it hit the streaming service—a first—but only in limited release, and it followed a smaller platform rollout in the ensuing months. ..........

So while that whole issue remains in flux, Spielberg’s taking steps to prevent Netflix from gaining even more ground at next year’s Oscars—but not all filmmakers are in agreement. ...........

  5. André Previn, Musical Polymath, Has Died At Age 89

".........he was a composer of Oscar-winning film music, conductor, pianist and music director of major orchestras. His manager, Linda Petrikova, confirmed to NPR that he died at his home in Manhattan.

Previn wrote a tune in the 1950s. In the vernacular of the day, he called it "Like Young." His Hollywood friend, the great lyricist Ira Gershwin, was critical. "Don't you know it should be "As Young?" asked Gershwin. Previn loved that story — from his jazz side.

Tim Page, a Pulitzer Prize-winning former music critic and professor of journalism and music at the University of Southern California, says that jazz was just one side of the multitalented artist. "He really seriously distinguished himself in a lot of different fields. He was not one of these people who came in and shook up one field forever and ever," Page notes.......

Previn won four Oscars for his film work, including his adaptation of the score for the movie version of My Fair Lady. He also won 10 Grammy Awards for his film, jazz and classical recordings, as well as a lifetime achievement prize in 2009; he was also awarded a Kennedy Center Honor in 1998. This versatile, gifted musician was so multitalented. But Page argues that his best work was far removed from the concert stage. ...

Academy Voters Don’t Watch The Animated Features They Vote On

    — And @TheAcademy Is Fine With That

".....The following categories require that Academy voters view all the nominated films in a category before voting:

    • Animated Short Film
    • Live Action Short Film
    • Documentary Short Subject
    • Documentary Feature
    • Foreign Language Film Award

That’s every film award category, in fact, except for Best Picture and Best Animated Feature.

So the question is, why doesn’t the animated feature award follow the rules that have been established for the majority of the other film awards?

..... it’s time for the animation world to demand that the Academy begins treating animation with the respect it deserves. At the very least, filmmakers deserve to have their hard work viewed by the people who are judging their work.

Anything less than that is an insult to the animation community. ....

No disrespect to Green Book at the #OscarsOscars_2019.png, but many of us in the black community would like to see greater recognition for movies about the black experience and

not just for movies that make the black experience comfortable for white audiences.

"More sad news...MORGAN WOODWARD, everyone's favorite Bad Guy died this morning after several years of fighting off cancer. He was an astonishingly versatile actor and one of the kindest, gentlest man you could ever meet. Everyone who ever met Morgan, loved him. So very lucky to have been in his orbit for the past 35 years. His last acting performance was in my son RJ's music video of "Here Today." Go check it out on Spotify. He went peacefully this morning. It's been a tough week. For the past few years we've been having "Morgan Woodward's Last Birthday Party." He loved them and so did we! Actually, I talked with him last week about our plans for his 94th birthday celebration. Attached is a selection of favorite photos and one of his charming interviews from A WORD ON WESTERNS. What a great voice! Rest in Peace, Amigo. You are missed already!"

Has anybody noticed the death of Clark Gable's grandson? I'm hearing that he died today in Dallas Texas at the age of 30. He was the former host of  "Cheaters" and I believe his name was Clark James Gable or he called himself Clark Gable III. His death was announced on Facebook by his sister Kayley Gable.

He was the son of John Clark Gable, the only son of movie Legend Clark Gable.

If you get to see a photo of him, you will see that he was almost a dead ringer for his grandfather.
