LA Noir - 1/27 "In honor of sister channel TNT's six-part limited series I Am the Night, TCM presents a double feature of highly celebrated films from 1949-50. ...... Act of Violence (1949), the first film noir on our double bill, was one of the earliest movies to focus on the troubled life of some veterans returning home from World War II. Fred Zinnemann directs a cast headed by Van Heflin as the survivor of a Nazi concentration camp who is hailed as a war hero after returning to California. Robert Ryan plays a fellow survivor in pursuit of Heflin because of his betrayal of fellow prisoners. Costarring are Janet Leigh as Heflin's wife, Phyllis Thaxter as Ryan's girlfriend and Mary Astor as a prostitute involved in the conflict. Bosley Crowther wrote in The New York Times that the film is a "tour de force" for Zinnemann, and that the director keeps "the pursued and the pursuer going at a grueling pace." In a Lonely Place (1950), directed by Nicholas Ray and based on a novel by Dorothy B. Hughes, stars Humphrey Bogart as a hot-tempered, down-on-his-luck Hollywood screenwriter who is suspected of murdering a hatcheck girl. Gloria Grahame costars as the aspiring actress who falls in love with the writer despite his violent tendencies, with Frank Lovejoy and Carl Benton Reid playing police detectives investigating the crime. The movie was well-reviewed upon its premiere, and its critical reputation has only grown over the years. Critic Roger Ebert included it in his list of "great films," and L.A. Bennett is appropriately tragic and sweet, but not in a bland way. She makes a very traditional role into something special. Novarro is great making his transition from a devoted protector to a paranoid hardened man of the streets. Beery is at his best here; every expression is a delight to watch. He balances humor and sincerity very well. Scott Salinas provides a gorgeous and perfect score for the TCM presentation of the film. He truly understand the art of bringing emotion to a scene; he managed to make every note blend excellently with the fabric of the story. Oscar-winning French composer Michel Legrand dies aged 86 During a career spanning more than 50 years, Legrand wrote over 200 film and TV scores, as well as songs. In 1968, he won his first Oscar for the song The Windmills of Your Mind from The Thomas Crown Affair film. Two more Oscars followed in 1971 and 1983 for the best original scores in Summer of '42 and Yentl films respectively. In the 1960s, he collaborated with French new wave director Jacques Demy on The Umbrellas of Cherbourg - the work which opened the door for Legrand to Hollywood. Legrand was known for his often jazz-tinged music. " The word "pioneer" is thrown around a lot to describe those who helped shape a medium, but Ernie Kovacs qualifies for the title because he was a true television innovator. Watching kinescopes of his programs for the first time is a little shocking for those for who think of I Love Lucy as representational of what comedy was in 1950s television. While other producers were essentially recreating vaudeville or the visual equivalent of a radio program, Kovacs took the medium and the comedy genre and turned it on its head, inside out, and upside down,...
