I don't think they have a "science fiction" label, which is the problem. As far as I can tell, these are the labels currently in use:

    • Red = Drama
    • Blue = Comedy
    • Light Blue = Horror
    • Gray = Epic
    • Gray-Purple = Musical
    • Green = Western
    • Pink = Romance
    • Light Pink? = Shorts
    • Black = Silent
    • Yellow = Documentary
    • Brown = Crime
    • Purple = Suspense Mystery
    • Dark Purple = Adventure
    • Tan = War

    Did I forget any?

just indicates what I've long assumed.....they have little to no interest in either sci-fi or horror genres :(

  2. LA Noir - 1/27

"In honor of sister channel TNT's six-part limited series I Am the Night, TCM presents a double feature of highly celebrated films from 1949-50. ......
Act of Violence (1949), the first film noir on our double bill, was one of the earliest movies to focus on the troubled life of some veterans returning home from World War II. Fred Zinnemann directs a cast headed by Van Heflin as the survivor of a Nazi concentration camp who is hailed as a war hero after returning to California. Robert Ryan plays a fellow survivor in pursuit of Heflin because of his betrayal of fellow prisoners. Costarring are Janet Leigh as Heflin's wife, Phyllis Thaxter as Ryan's girlfriend and Mary Astor as a prostitute involved in the conflict. Bosley Crowther wrote in The New York Times that the film is a "tour de force" for Zinnemann, and that the director keeps "the pursued and the pursuer going at a grueling pace."

In a Lonely Place (1950), directed by Nicholas Ray and based on a novel by Dorothy B. Hughes, stars Humphrey Bogart as a hot-tempered, down-on-his-luck Hollywood screenwriter who is suspected of murdering a hatcheck girl. Gloria Grahame costars as the aspiring actress who falls in love with the writer despite his violent tendencies, with Frank Lovejoy and Carl Benton Reid playing police detectives investigating the crime. The movie was well-reviewed upon its premiere, and its critical reputation has only grown over the years. Critic Roger Ebert included it in his list of "great films," and L.A. Confidential (1997) director Curtis Hanson calls the artistic partnership between director Ray and actor Bogart "breathtaking."

    http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/1381/Red-Lily-The/articles.html

".... there is plenty of tension throughout the film which puts the audience's emotions into overdrive. The film was shot extremely well; every frame is a work of art. The tinting is not overdone at all either. The characters are very likable, thanks to the wonderful acting by the cast. Bennett is appropriately tragic and sweet, but not in a bland way. She makes a very traditional role into something special. Novarro is great making his transition from a devoted protector to a paranoid hardened man of the streets. Beery is at his best here; every expression is a delight to watch. He balances humor and sincerity very well.

Scott Salinas provides a gorgeous and perfect score for the TCM presentation of the film. He truly understand the art of bringing emotion to a scene; he managed to make every note blend excellently with the fabric of the story.

This is silent movie making at its best, ...."

"...Querelle was released just a few weeks after Fassbinder's death to a decidedly mixed reception from critics and audiences. It was a big success in its first weeks in Paris, prompting Genet biographer Edmund White to declare that this was the first time a film with such a strong gay theme had seen such commercial success.

On the other hand, the picture perplexed many reviewers. New York Times critic Vincent Canby called it "a mess, and of value mostly for the ways in which it defines the particular strengths and limitations of the most important European film maker of his generation." .....

  5. Oscar-winning French composer Michel Legrand dies aged 86

During a career spanning more than 50 years, Legrand wrote over 200 film and TV scores, as well as songs.

In 1968, he won his first Oscar for the song The Windmills of Your Mind from The Thomas Crown Affair film.

Two more Oscars followed in 1971 and 1983 for the best original scores in Summer of '42 and Yentl films respectively.

In the 1960s, he collaborated with French new wave director Jacques Demy on The Umbrellas of Cherbourg - the work which opened the door for Legrand to Hollywood.

Legrand was known for his often jazz-tinged music.

He had planned to give concerts in Paris in April, the AFP news agency reports.

GLAAD removes "Bohemian Rhapsody" from film award consideration over allegations against director Bryan Singer

.......GLAAD, a media monitoring organization founded by LGBT people in the media, told Variety that the allegations could not be ignored.

“In light of the latest allegations against director Bryan Singer, GLAAD has made the difficult decision to remove ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ from contention for a GLAAD Media Award in the Outstanding Film – Wide Release category this year," they said in a statement. "This week’s story in The Atlantic documenting unspeakable harms endured by young men and teenage boys brought to light a reality that cannot be ignored or even tacitly rewarded."

“Singer’s response to The Atlantic story wrongfully used ‘homophobia’ to deflect from sexual assault allegations and GLAAD urges the media and the industry at large to not gloss over the fact that survivors of sexual assault should be put first.”

  8. just catching some of......... (weird flick!) ;)

    never saw before

    ------------------------------------------------------

"Audiences seeing Psych-Out for the first time will be fascinated, amused or even embarrassed by the presence of so many up-and-coming actors and directors in such low-budget drive-in fare. Besides Nicholson (in a ponytail and not even bothering to fake his own guitar playing), Dern (in a wild man wig), and Strasberg,Dean Stockwell makes a memorable impression as Dave, the long-haired, headband-wearing guru of the group who plays devil's advocate to Nicholson's rock 'n' roll hero. Adam Rourke, who had already appeared in Hells Angels on Wheels (1967) with Nicholson, would go on to specialize in other biker flicks and exploitation films ........

it actually received favorable coverage from many mainstream critics such as Renata Adler of The New York Times who commented that the movie "has considerable elan" and noted, "What is most interesting, though, is that the demands of plot seem to make it necessary to superimpose the structure of a Western onto hippie life." Variety was impressed the performances of the main actors, but also with the direction and cinematography: "Rush's direction is quite exceptional. ....

  9. Wed., 1-23 for                      Ernie Kovacs Centennial.........

" The word "pioneer" is thrown around a lot to describe those who helped shape a medium, but Ernie Kovacs qualifies for the title because he was a true television innovator. Watching kinescopes of his programs for the first time is a little shocking for those for who think of I Love Lucy as representational of what comedy was in 1950s television.

While other producers were essentially recreating vaudeville or the visual equivalent of a radio program, Kovacs took the medium and the comedy genre and turned it on its head, inside out, and upside down,...

    THE PERFECT MARLOWE?

I would have cast William Holden. His work with Billy Wilder showed he could play it sardonic and sarcastic.

Had many of Marlowe’s character traits, and could play chess like the guy in the books. ⁦

I would have loved to have seen Holden and Wilder in the 1950s do an adaptation of Chandler’s best book, THE LONG GOODBYE.

  15. Television and movie comedian Ernie Kovacs is remembered by TCM

He was ahead of his time, but in his time, Ernie Kovacs was one of comedy’s most unique talents.

With his work commemorated by several home-video collections over the past several years – including the recent “Ernie Kovacs: The Centennial Edition” – the iconoclastic and innovative Kovacs is remembered by Turner Classic Movies with a full night of his late-1950s and early-1960s television programs and feature films Wednesday, Jan. 23, the exact 100th anniversary of his birth.operationmadball_1957_lc_02_1200_061220090328.jpg

The lineup includes three episodes of “The Ernie Kovacs Show” first broadcast by ABC, plus the movies “Operation Mad Ball” (with Kovacs as a military-hospital officer in a rivalry with fellow soldier Jack Lemmon), “Wake Me When It’s Over” (as another officer privy to a scheme by draftee Dick Shawn), “Bell Book and Candle” (a witchcraft comedy reteaming Kovacs with Lemmon, and also starring James Stewart and Kim Novak) and “Five Golden Hours” (with con man Kovacs’ game called by savvy baroness Cyd Charisse). ..........

A fill-in host for Steve Allen on NBC’s original incarnation of “The Tonight Show,” Kovacs is cited by many as having really come into his own with the series of monthly ABC specials collectively known as “The Ernie Kovacs Show.” Those programs crystallized everything Kovacs liked to do, experimenting with sound, music, editing and special effects … and even having total control over the commercials he did for his sponsor, Dutch Masters cigars.

Kovacs won an Emmy Award for the series, but tragically, what his additional output might have been was curtailed by his death in a 1962 car accident........
