  1. Life's Cruelty Is A Constant In The Coen Brothers' Mixed Bag Western 'Ballad'

"Joel and Ethan Coen have an erratic body of work but a remarkably consistent worldview. So it's no surprise that their six-part Western anthology, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, feels like both an entirely coherent vision and something of a mixed bag.

The vignettes are wildly divergent in quality: There are shaggy-dog tales and grim morality plays, and one violently over-the-top farce. And yet somehow they all seem to be telling the same story: Life is cruel and absurd, comedy is indistinguishable from tragedy, and fortune smiles on someone only to turn around and kick them in the gut........

In The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, they gleefully embrace the conventions and clichés of the genre, but to strangely melancholy — even troubling — effect. As the Coens remind us, with their usual impish wit and impeccable craft, there's still a lot of pleasure to be mined from those conventions. But there are lessons to be learned, too. The road that seems to stretch toward manifest destiny often leads to brutality and death, one tall tale at a time. "

  3. We’re Not Mad Enough About the End of FilmStruck

It's not just about one streaming service. It's about watching the history of an art form disappear to save a few bucks.

"........So I say, screw ‘em. Take it personally. I’m going to rip my discs and share my Plex libraries. Get behind a VPN and download rarities. Stream and capture. (I’m not saying I’ll use an HDMI splitter and Game Capture device to connect my Roku to my laptop and capture FilmStruck’s content before it vanishes forever, but I’m not not saying it.) Figure out my own ways to circumvent a system that killed the mom-and-pop video store, then killed the chain video store, then replaced it with streaming services that eventually dumped their catalogues for “original content” with a fraction of the cultural value. Get mad. Fight for the art that matters to me. Somebody has to.

One of the most indelible images of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 (and of Francois Truffaut’s film adaptation) is that of the Book People, who have attempted to preserve literature in a time of book-burning by each committing a book to memory, and reciting it. That’s a commitment, and perhaps that’s the kind of spirit those of us who care about film history have to adopt. The difference is that our cultural history isn’t being erased by the government. It’s being erased by capitalists."

Based on MovieCollectorOH's latest update, TCM has changed the schedule for late hours on November 23rd:

    - River's Edge (1986) (scheduled premiere) and In Cold Blood (1967) (not a premiere) are replaced with

    - Mac and Me (1988) (a TCM premiere) and The Garbage Pail Kids Movie (1987) (also a premiere).

I have updated the list of November premieres above with the changes.

  6. "It was a director's nightmare. Two film versions of the same story were being made at the same time. Both came from Les Liaisons Dangereuses, an 18th century novel of sexual intrigue. This was not good news for Milos Forman, whose version was not based on the modern theatrical success, did not have a screenplay written by the playwright of the stage hit and did not star such big names as Glenn Close and Michele Pfeiffer.

The Warner Bros./Lorimar version, directed by Stephen Frears and named "Dangerous Liaisons," would be the first one into theaters, in December, 1988. Despite its star cast, it was made for the relatively modest budget of about $15 million. Forman's Orion Pictures version, named "Valmont," would cost $35 million - with the extra money mostly going for elaborate sets, costumes and location shooting. It would not be ready for another year. Would it be canceled?

"We were in the middle of our script already when they announced their version, based on the play," Milos Forman was remembering.....

Forman's "Valmont" is a much different film from Frears' "Dangerous Liaisons," which was nominated as one of last year's best pictures. The Frears version is cerebral and claustrophobic, an exercise in sexual mindplay.

Forman's is more physical. In "Dangerous Liaisons," the characters seem turned on by the idea of seducing the innocent....

As Forman explained his theories of women, love and romance, I was reminded that I was, after all, speaking with a European. It's possible that Americans are more idealistic on romantic subjects, or like to pretend they are. His views, which I found cynical, he found merely realistic. If there is a basic difference in sensibility between Americans and Europeans, and in many ways there probably is ........

A MESSAGE FROM EDDIE M ... regarding this week's @NoirAlley offering, "The Sniper."

Some people have objected to images from this film being posted here in the aftermath of the nation's latest mass shooting. Some have called for the film's broadcast to be postponed ...

. or cancelled. Here's the thing: I was very hesitant to show this film at all, but decided there was no value in NOT confronting these issues head-on, even though we'd all prefer TCM to be "an escape."

If you feel this is insensitive, I encourage you to watch my intro and outro, even if you don't want to watch the film.

Also: these shows are scheduled months in advance; I wish I could say there's no way to predict when we'll have another mass shooting, but that's BS—we had one the day I booked this, which is why I had second thoughts.

We have mass shootings constantly in this country, virtually every day.

Cancelling an airing of a 66-year-old movie that had the foresight and courage to confront a disturbing issue is NOT the solution to our never-ending national disgrace.@NoirAlley

    Gilda Live (1980)

    Synopsis:
DirMike Nichols CastGilda Radner , Don Novello , Diana Grasselli .

" Gilda Radner's first feature film Gilda Live (1980) is a record of her mostly one-woman Broadway show directed by Mike Nichols.

The delightful Gilda Radner was the first comedian hired at the inception of the game-changing TV comedy show Saturday Night Live (1975). She was the first breakout star of the Not Ready for Prime Time Players troupe, eclipsing even John Belushi in popularity. Arguably a more natural comedian than any of her cohorts, Radner wrote much of her own material, creating a string of original, unforgettable characters spanning all ages of womanhood: the gawky kid Lisa Loopner, the crude, argumentative Roseanne Roseannadanna and the elderly fussbudget Emily Litella. .......
