    LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

?Jean Renoir. Anna Magnani, Odoardo Spadaro, Nada Fiorelli, Dante Rino, Duncan Lamont, Jean Debucourt.

Delightful film about an acting troupe touring South America in the 18th century and the amorous adventures of its leading lady. Theatrical and stylized, this is one of the great films about acting--and a stunning achievement in the use of color. Ironically, it was a flop when first released, then critically rediscovered. Photographed by Claude Renoir; music by Vivaldi.

Synopsis: " Morrison's justly acclaimed 2016 documentary Dawson City: Frozen Time combines his gift for transforming found footage with the real-life story of Dawson City, Yukon, Canada, a community with a rich history of ups, downs and in-betweens fueled by the changing fortunes of prospectors, gold miners, transportation companies and entrepreneurs dating back to the 19th century with the Klondike Gold Rush ....

he unfolds most of his historical narrative by means of clips and texts superimposed over the images. This reinforces the quietly contemplative atmosphere of the documentary, which is further enhanced by Alex Somers's mesmerizing music score. Entertaining and informative in equal measure, Dawson City: Frozen Time is must-see viewing for anyone interested in film history, cultural history, or North American history. "

  12. New ‘Popular’ Oscar Scrapped by Film Academy for 2019

"The most unpopular move the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may have ever made was reversed on Thursday:

The next Academy Awards will not add a category for achievement in “popular” films after all.

But the concept may not be completely dead.

“There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members,” Dawn Hudson, the academy’s chief executive, said in a statement.

Ms. Hudson emphasized in a subsequent telephone interview that the academy was not abandoning its effort to “honor excellence across a wider scope of films.”........

When the category was announced, Mr. Bailey positioned it as an improvement “needed to keep the Oscars and our academy relevant in a changing world” — an effort to counterbalance an increasing tendency by Oscar voters to honor niche films that most American moviegoers have not seen.

On Thursday, Ms. Hudson said the board as a whole continued to believe in that principle. Looking at it in retrospect, however, she said the announcement should have been made with more complete information, and not just as the Oscar race was beginning to kick into high gear at the Telluride, Venice and Toronto film festivals.

“Our intention was always excellence first, but I don’t think that was clear in the initial announcement,” Ms. Hudson said......

See?  You don't get filmmakers like Spike Lee.  Ok, they did show Do the Right Thing (1989).  And Get on the Bus (1996).  And She's Gotta Have It (1986).

Maybe TCM is reluctant to do do the work to come up with a list of movies.  For Labor Day, I want to build a line up for TCM to make it easy for them.  Hm.  There's the obvious The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and Norma Rae (1979).  Then Roger and Me (1989).  Going back there's Our Daily Bread (1934), and The Devil and Miss Jones (1941).  And I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang (1932), and Heroes For Sale (1933).  I'll have to think of others.

  17. Sudden Fear (1952)

" It had been seven years since Mildred Pierce, the role Joan Crawford had to audition for at Warner Brothers after MGM terminated her contract, and the hit she rode to an Oscar. But even the greatest Hollywood careers oscillate like the stock market, and though the late 1940s saw some of her best work, by 1952 Crawford was once more in a box-office trough. She asked Warners to let her go, they did, and Crawford went to RKO for Sudden Fear—where once again, she landed an Oscar nomination and a roaring success. ......
