" Czech animator Jiří Trnka, known as the "Walt Disney of Eastern Europe" said about puppet films, "Puppet films are truly unlimited in their possibilities: they can express themselves with the greatest force precisely when the realistic expression of the cinematographic image often faces insurmountable obstacles." He spent most of his career animating adaptations of literature and fairy tales, but in his last film, and often considered his greatest, The Hand, he creates an overtly pessimistic allegory of the oppression of personal freedom and censorship. Banned in Czechoslovakia for two decades. "

London Film Festival to Close With 'Stan & Ollie' The film, starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly, is getting its world premiere in London. Stan & Ollie, the Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly-starring biopic of one of Hollywood's greatest double acts, Laurel and Hardy, is to get its world premiere as the closing-night film of this year's BFI London Film Festival. The film, directed by Jon S. Baird (Filth, Babylon), will close the curtain on the 62nd edition of the festival on Oct. 21, organizers unveiled on Friday. Written by Jeff Pope (Philomena), Stan & Ollie tells the story of Laurel and Hardy as they journey around the U.K. and Ireland in what would become the pair’s triumphant farewell tour. Despite the pressure of a hectic schedule, with the support of their wives Lucille (Shirley Henderson) and Ida (Nina Arianda) — a formidable double act in their own right — the pair’s love of performing, as well as love for each other, endures as they secure their place in the hearts of their adoring public......" https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/london-film-festival-close-stan-ollie-1130751

as per Ben in intro tonight..... 9:45 PM (ET) B/W - 104 m TV-PG Closed Captions Man From Snowy River, The (1982) Synopsis: Dir: George Miller Cast: Kirk Douglas , Jack Thompson , Tom Burlinson . "... captured fans with its depiction of life on a frontier that was, in some areas, still very much untamed territory. It should be noted that the director is not the George Miller who directed the Mad Max films, but rather George T. Miller (though the initial is not included in the film's credits). Australian poet A.B. "Banjo" Paterson's narrative poem about the search for a prizewinning racehorse in the mountains of New South Wales first appeared in 1890. Possibly inspired by two different stockmen (Australian cowboys), the poem is considered a key work in the development of the country's literature and national identity. http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/82603/Man-From-Snowy-River-The/articles.html

NEW HOSTS DAVE KARGER AND ALICIA MALONE...
mr6666 replied to SueSueApplegate's topic in General Discussions
The TCM Hosts Preach the Gospel of Being Yourself "...... All four of the hosts for Turner Classic Movies were in the same city, in the same building, in the same room at the same time, talking to each other, on camera. Ben Mankiewicz, Alicia Malone, Eddie Muller, and Dave Karger are the faces of TCM, introducing and wrapping up screenings of some of the best movies ever made. More than simply throwing to a movie, the hosts of the cable network have built a community around watching these classic films, and have become companions the viewing audience loves spending time with. This isn’t something that happens on TV anymore. Nerdist was honored to get to spend the afternoon with the four hosts, and discuss how they all came to be part of the TCM community. The key, it turns out, is the same for all the best experiences, work or otherwise: just be yourself....... Speaking on the kindness of the TCM community, Malone said, “I get so many nice emails from a variety of people, some who have said, ‘I’ve been a fan of yours since the early days of you being on YouTube and it’s great to see now on TCM.’ And people always write to me saying, ‘You’re so enthusiastic about films.’ It’s like, because I really am! I’m really loving every second of this.” Mankiewicz summed up the entire thing very well: “I think the audience that watches is an audience that, in life, is craving authenticity.” He said, with a world as fractious and wildly fake, it’s nice to be the keepers of the past. “We don’t know what the future holds, but we know what the past holds, and that’s what this place is.” https://nerdist.com/tcm-hosts-classic-movies-be-yourself/
