  1. Wed. 7-25 for                       Slavery in Film.......

    (time ET)

    LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW:

? John Berry. Dorothy Dandridge, Curt Jurgens, Jean Servais, Roger Hanin, Guy Mairesse, Alex Cressan.

"Stirring historical drama in which newly enslaved black African Cressan stirs revolt while being transported to Cuba aboard a slave ship. Dandridge is excellent in the complex role of a slave who is ship captain Jurgens' mistress. Way ahead of its time, and ripe for rediscovery. Based on a novelette by Prosper Merimee. "

    Mandingo (1975)

    Synopsis:
DirRichard O. Fleischer CastJames Mason , Susan George , Perry King .

" both reviled and celebrated for its portrait of the horrors of American slavery and its salacious mix of sex and violence since its release in 1975. The story of a brutal, virulently racist Southern slave-owning father and his lame son, who has a more romantic view of the relationship between white slavers and the enslaved black population they buy and sell, plays like a tawdry hothouse melodrama of sadism, sexual exploitation and social outrage, with overheated emotions and despicable acts of degradation on display. ..."

I couldn't care less about Bernstein, and kinda resent losing a Silent Sunday and a TCM Import because of him. They couldn't show all of this during one day/night? Or better yet, on PBS? It's bad enough losing all of the regular shows for an entire month in August, so losing a week now is extra irritating.

But I know I'm in the minority with this sentiment, and I hope fans of tonight and tomorrow's programming enjoy what's being offered.

    giphy.gif

didn't realize I was losing my Silent/Import 'fix', til I checked schedule :(

-kinda enjoyed what I saw of the Bernstein tribute (brought back memories of me in kidhood trying to understand them),

but if they thought it worth 3 nights, wish they'd left my fav Sun. night alone!  Bummer <_<

    Festival (1967)

Synopsis: "Before rock became the dominant music of the counter-culture, there was folk, and this documentary captures most of the leading lights of that movement over the course of three Newport Folk Festivals in 1963, 1964 and 1965. The film captures performances by Joan Baez, Peter Paul and Mary, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Donovan, Odetta, and many more. ....

Festival is a reminder of what these gatherings were like before the age of corporate sponsorship, endless swag and ubiquitous electronic devices mediating between the performer and the spectator. ......

I haven't seen Revolution in a long time, and I'm unsure if what I saw was the director's cut or not, but, even as a big fan of Al Pacino, I thought this was his worst movie up to that time, and for sometime after, probably until he started doing direct-to-video stuff in the late 00's.

    from article........

" Hudson himself re-edited it and got Pacino to do a whole new narration for the director's cut which, contrary to popular standards, ran shorter than the theatrical cut. Move to the present day and the consensus is that Revolution is a lot better than people once thought. ..."

? William A. Seiter. Kay Francis, Carole Landis, Martha Raye, Mitzi Mayfair, Phil Silvers, Dick Haymes, Jimmy Dorsey and His Orchestra; guest stars Betty Grable, Alice Faye, Carmen Miranda, George Jessel.

"Contrived wartime entertainment with four leading ladies reenacting their actual experiences entertaining soldiers overseas (which Landis turned into a popular book of the same name). Some good musical moments but nothing to shout about."

Anyone catch this last night on 'Imports'?

thought it an excellent example both storywise & visually :)
