(thanks for reminder, Lawrence) also late Sat., 6-23/24 4:00 AM (ET) B/W - 118 m TV-MA All-American Boy, The (1973) Synopsis: boxer's " fear of owing something to someone and his inability to hold up his part of a bargain infringes on his sense of "freedom," which negatively impacts anyone in his personal orbit. " Dir: Charles Eastman Cast: Jon Voight , Nancie Phillips , Art Metrano . ".... Though flawed, with an unsympathetic protagonist too unclear to pin down, the film does reflect a unique voice from a turbulent time. late Sun., 6-17 for TCM Imports...... 4:00 AM (ET) B/W - 86 m TV-MA Widescreen Fighting Elegy (1966) Synopsis: High schooler Nanbu Kiroku yearns for the prim, Catholic Michiko, but her only desire is to reform Kiroku's sinful tendencies. Dir: Seijun Suzuki Cast: Hideki Takahashi , Junko Asano , Yusuke Kawazu . "... In equal parts hilarious and disturbing, Fighting Elegy finds Suzuki returning to the terrain of Japanese youth he explored in some of his fascinating earlier films like The Boy Who Came Back (1958), The Wind-of-Youth Group Crosses the Mountain Pass (1961), Teenage Yakuza (1962), The Incorrigible (1963) and Born Under Crossed Stars (1965). His affinity for getting sincere, dedicated performances out of young actors was already a given; however, it really pays off here thanks to one of his strongest scripts courtesy of Kaneto Shindo, best known for penning the sexually-charged horror classic Onibaba (1964). ......... see article: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/558661/Fighting-Elegy/articles.html

'Hereditary' Review: Family Horror Tale Is the Scariest Movie of 2018 Story of a family suffering from grief – and something vaguely supernatural – is an instant scary-movie classic ".....The movie builds like a gathering storm. You'll be hearing the score by saxophonist Colin Stetson in your nightmares, where the visual effects of makeup-and-prosthetics master Steve Newburn also work their dark magic. Still, Hereditary achieves its tightest hold on us, not through gore but through the violence of the mind. It gives us real people to contemplate, not the cardboard cutouts hack directors use for cheap scares. .... https://www.rollingstone.com/movies/reviews/hereditary-movie-review-scariest-movie-of-2018-w521098

HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

first time for me too & found it pretty absorbing for a B-war flick. Put it this way, liked it better than the writer of the TCM article: http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/69632/Breakthrough/articles.html but maybe not quite THIS much.... ".... Reviews were largely positive, with The Hollywood Reporter heralding "a powerful, tensely absorbing film" and Louella Parsons of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner's crowed, "Here is realism of the finest kind." The Hollywood Citizen News mistakenly praised Roy del Ruth (it was Lewis Seiler ) for "a brilliant job of directing" and a grudgingly complimentary Newsweek lauded the "grime-smeared honesty" of Breakthrough's dramatis personae. Dir: Walter Summers Cast: Joyce Kennedy , Ralph Richardson , Ann Todd . ".... this 1934 British picture is based on The Black Gang (1922), the immediate sequel to his franchise-launching Bulldog Drummond (1920). .... it’s a fast-paced ripping yarn which stumbles interestingly as it tries not to be quite as politically embarrassing as the novel. ..." https://johnnyalucard.com/2017/12/07/film-review-the-return-of-bulldog-drummond-1934/
