    Down by Law (1986)

AKA: Bajo el peso de la ley

Synopsis: A pair of petty thieves and losers end up in jail with an Italian tourist. In a strange twist of luck, the three manage to escape and wonder what to do next.
DirJim Jarmusch CastTom Waits , John Lurie , Roberto Benigni .

".... On the surface, it's grim and relentless, but there's a thread of humor running through everything, and that takes the curse off. We are never quite sure that Jarmusch intends us to take anything seriously, and there are times when the actors seem to be smiling to themselves as they growl through their lines. ... it's a good movie, and the more you know about movies, the more you're likely to like it. ".... despite its shortcomings of narrative and technique: one is its implicit critique of the low-end "family values" that undermine the morality of some communities, and the other is its explicit exposure of the bigotry and racism that continue to bedevil modern America. "

".... It's a surprisingly effective quiet little film that one would never associate with Taylor or Beatty. Filmed in Paris, with insert shots from Vegas, the movie is forced into long interior takes, which Henri Deca makes work. The music is a sleepy jazzy score that works all on its own. No, it's not what one would expect from the powerhouse teaming of all those big names. It's small and quiet and intimate. And though Gilroy could have fleshed it out a bit more, or Stevens tightened it up a bit more, it still works, at the very least as a fascinating departure for everyone at hand. ...

  16. Hollywood’s Brazen Self-Celebration at the 2018 Oscars

"........ Last year’s Oscars, held during the first shock of life under a depraved new Administration, lent a sudden rush of authentic outrage to the notion of liberal Hollywood standing defiantly together. But now the enemy is within, and, under the guise of a collective embrace of new mores, the Oscars look bewildered, straining, with a handful of well-chosen speakers and well-intentioned gestures, to maintain a confident and hopeful air. Ultimately, the self-deception that Hollywood fears most involves the box office, which dropped six per cent in 2017. With awards to “Darkest Hour” and “Dunkirk,” the Oscars display their particular enthusiasm for fighting the enemies on the outside.

Increasingly, for Hollywood, the most frightening foe is Netflix.
