  1. No wonder you have so many posts! LOL.
  2. Did they sell off all the acreage of the Lloyd estate?? Looks like there are houses all around it. Edited by: Hibi on May 4, 2012 12:02 PM
  3. I'm sure there were. Just not on every block!
  4. He should've got an Oscar nomination (Curtis) One of Oscar's great snubs.........
  5. Not as interesting as last years. Mostly old standbys. At least a silent star is presented (Lillian Gish) but something tells me most of her films will be talkies. Glad Warren William and Kay Francis got a nod....... I just noticed James Caan. James Caan? Huh? Edited by: Hibi on May 4, 2012 8:05 AM
  6. Yeah, he was also shaved in Love Is A Many Splendored Thing that year. They let him keep his chest hair in Sunset Blvd. Guess it was the director's call. (LOL). He was a bit old, but he was a good casting choice...
  7. No. LOL. It was the 50s. She's in a group of teenage girls on the pier..........
  8. I love Picnic. I think it's the better film of the two by far (for one thing Peyton Place has too much ground and time to cover)....Did anyone ever notice Phyllis Newman in a bit part at the picnic? She's one of the bathers ogling William Holden (and there's a lot to ogle!) and has one line (putting down Nick Adams). I dont think she even got screen credit...........
  9. OMG! Horrible. Unrecognizable. That one bldg in the old photo looks like a theater. Was that razed?
  10. I thought Lana did ok. It's a stretch for the audience to accept her as a repressed, rather puritanical figure. Now the living with a married man part I could accept! Yeah, but these "soap opera duds" of Lanas in the late 50s-early 60s were HUGE moneymakers (except for the last one, Madame X). Audiences ate them up! Edited by: Hibi on May 3, 2012 10:18 AM
  11. Did anyone else noticed his gray hair varied in color in different parts of the film? Were they trying to make him older? I didnt notice it with anyone else. Unless being in the film accelerated his graying? (LOL)...
  12. LOL. Jose Ferrer. The director of the illustrious State Fair remake (poor Alice Faye!) I'd forgotten he directed Return. I havent seen it in years. It's worth a look for Mary Astor who is quite a hoot, but the rest is pretty boring/bad..........From what I've read today on imdb, the finished film was greatly changed from the book and even from the original screenplay. Apparently there was a big fire at the end which Mary Astor started to kill off her hated daughter in law which was completely cut out. Too bad, as that would've livened up the dull proceedings immeasurably! Agree about Lynley. Edited by: Hibi on May 2, 2012 4:08 PM
  13. YES. In WWII. But since the tv show was set in the 60s, he was quite alive! Edited by: Hibi on May 2, 2012 4:02 PM
  14. I cant say I remember any of her films, but I do remember seeing her in tv roles in the 60s. She was very beautiful........
  15. I dont understand what the hold up is with Mary Astor. She played plenty of leads so she qualifies. And they have access to many of her films. Dont get it.........
  16. LOL (Madge) That was one of her sister's wisecracks. Yes, Betty Field's part was smaller in Peyton Place. I dont remember the film, but I do remember ads for the sequel (eventually saw both on tv, but only after I'd started watching the tv series as a child. Was a bit jarring to see the changes, like Norman). The sequel was definitely 2nd rate. And you're right, I dont think anyone from the original film was in it. Mary Astor was great as a mother in law from hell, but I cant remember much else about it (think it's been on TCM before) Carol Lynley played Alison. Eleanor Parker was Constance. Cant remember who played Rossi........ Edited by: Hibi on May 2, 2012 3:10 PM Edited by: Hibi on May 2, 2012 3:37 PM
  17. I thought Joan was SUTS?
