  1. Oh, I agree. Just because a movie is popular, doesnt mean it's any good. What do the masses know anyway? LOL.
  2. Celeste's tennis tourney was my fav. part! (LOL)
  3. What a weird coincidence, Fred. I enjoyed the movie, even though I could see every plot point coming..... And I remember all the stories about Loretta's swearbox! (LOL) Arturo, I wasnt implying Loretta played other nuns....
  4. OMG! I never realized this function either. I have some really old messages in there I never knew about. Apologies, all, for my lack of replying! (I'll get to them!) I'm still a little PC challenged......
  5. Loretta Young at her saintliest! I will try to watch it. Havent seen it in years.........
  6. Cant remember who brought it up, but that bit about not driving up, wasnt due to some preconceived plan she had. She didnt want the servants to see his car and know that he had visited.....
  7. Thanks for the clip, Fred. That's the first time I've ever seen J. C. in a flim! Definitely a different slant than the 40s version. It also has that early talkies static staginess...... I hadnt known in real life the woman was convicted. Interesting.........
  8. Yes, I agree. There are many comments alluding to Robert being away on his plantation and Leslie home alone with nothing to do (except knitting).......Happens all the time (maybe not as much now as most couples have to work to survive). Bored, lonely housewife with time on her hands..........
  9. I dont see her character as a floozy at all. The way Bette plays her and Wyler directs her (all the knitting etc. May be due to the code?) she comes across as repressed. I feel this was her first affair and she was overwhelmed by her feelings. Her hubby may be a nice guy, but she just doesnt love him..... I would love to see the precode version of this with J.E., if only TCM could get a hold of it! Edited by: Hibi on Feb 24, 2012 2:03 PM Edited by: Hibi on Feb 24, 2012 2:05 PM
  10. ****!!! Great picture (or should I say still!)
  11. No doubt some shady black market dealings.
  12. No, I seem to remember it had something to do with a line in a Shakespeare play, (but I could be wrong! LOL).....
  13. How could you miss DR. ZHIVAGO?? Which has to be running neck and neck with NBNW.........
  14. LOL. I wondered about that too. Didnt Bob Hope star in the stage version? I was wondering what part he played. I'm sure the vehicle was changed a lot to fit Fred and Ginger........ Edited by: Hibi on Feb 23, 2012 2:58 PM
  15. WOW. I'm tempted to tune in just to see her. I remember her well. I know she still keeps up on films and is a voting Academy member!
  16. I didnt know that about the Gladys Cooper character. According to imdb, the Charles Bickford character died BEFORE Bernadette so that business about the holy card was just a Hollywood touch apparently.
  17. No, I just dont see what depth you wanted her to show in this girl. She was just a young, peasant girl. I dont think it's that easy to play simple. (and I dont mean stupid) She captured the serenity and the innocence of the character........ I will agree with you about her swan song. A rather cruel exit as it turned out........... 18. OMG. Somehow The Enquirer got a hold of a casket photo. (dont think it's a recreation) Check your supermarket stalls this week! Sickos.......
  19. ****! Hilarious. Well, I said I didnt read it.............
  20. LOL, Fred. I wondered about that rose bush. I never saw it blooming after that!
  21. What kind of depth can you bring to the role of a poor, peasant girl?? Did you want her to speak in tongues or what? I felt she played the part the only way it could be played.. She was pure, innocent and believed in her vision..... I bought her performance totally. As if she walked in from the 19th century countryside..... Edited by: Hibi on Feb 22, 2012 3:31 PM
  22. Sorry, Jonny, but I totally disagree. I hadnt seen the film in many years and just loved it. (Maybe being an ex-Catholic helps) I thought Jennifer was wonderful and totally deserved the award. Maybe they overdid the Supporting Nominations, but Gladys certainly deserved hers...... I read somewhere that Linda Darnell played Mary (LOL).......
