Weird. I just watched him in an episode of the Alfred Hitchcock Hour last night...............

The remake did a better job of building the urgency and hysteria of the story, despite being longer. There is a certain coolness to the original, cant explain why exactly........Joan's character never completely loses it except towards the end. In the remake the mother starts losing her grip quite early.........

Well, I would've been curt with sonny boy too. That kid was annoying. And considering her daughter was a suspect/possible murderer of her boyfriend, Joan was pretty accepting of the situation, taking over the problem full force (not necessarily wisely). Let's face it, Joan was under a lot of stress and her hubby was gone so no one to discuss what to do (Let's not bother poor Gramps......) Joan was given several scenes where she gave voice to her feelings about her family. I remember her telling Mason in one scene she didnt feel trapped by her family........Joan did talk to her daughter earlier in the film, but the daughter negelected to fess up about the love letters..... Considering how awful the song choices usually are it may be a blessing.........

Yawn. I cant believe how in my younger days I really cared about this. I see they stiffed Leonardo again....Who the hell was that foreign actor? (not the Artist guy)....Guess the big if this year is weather Meryl will finally get another one or they'll keep ignoring her. It's obvious The Artist is going to be the big winner this year. I think Plummer has a lock in his category. The Academy loves people who play gay.......plus it'll be life achievement award of sorts.......He's given so many fine performances.........

Was so happy to finally see this film. You didnt miss too much. The movie moves quickly (a bit too quickly for my taste). For that reason I liked the remake better as it developed the characters more. The story was basically the same, but they added a few modern twists to the story (the son was gay.....) I agree the daughter falls by the wayside much too quickly in the original. I thought Joan Bennett did a great job, granted the limitations of the script. And James Mason too, in an even sketchier role. Did anyone notice the film didnt show Joan disposing of the body? Only the anchor? I had to rewind the DVR as I thought I missed something. Odd. Probably because little Joan couldnt have possible dragged that body into the swamp. (LOL)...... I wouldnt go so far to say Mason fell in love with Joan, but he came to empathize and feel sorry for her. The daughters blows didnt kill her boyfriend, he fell after she ran off, though I guess you could say she caused his death indirectly. I didnt see Joan disposing of the body at all. I reran the scene and it only showed her disposing of the anchor. It did show her putting the body in the boat. I guess the scene was too problematic to show so they either cut it or never intended to show it (the swamp part)...... Manchurian Candidate was not pulled from distribution for 26 years.

LOL. Sorry I missed that howler. Both How to Steal A Million and What's New Pussycat were probably bigger hits at the box office than My Favorite Year. Maybe young people today arent that aware of them, but certainly older audiences were/are......... -
My fear is if TCM does start running commercials (the crass variety, as they are already running movie related stuff in breaks) it will go the way of AMC. I dont want to see 5 mins of commercials interrupting movies.........On AMC first they started running them between films, then a few times during movies, eventually every 10 mins or so (never mind what scene they are interrupting.....) I couldnt tolerate that on TCM........

I thought the story was it was pulled after it's tv showings? I do remember it being shown on tv in the 60s. I also remember the hoopla when it was released into theaters in the 80s saying it had not been available. Maybe the time frame is wrong RO didnt say it was a coup on Frank Sinatra's part about Lansbury. He said Frankenheimer wanted her, not Sinatra (initially). I too, dont feel the public would have accepted Ball in that role and would've sabotaged the film............ Edited by: Hibi on Jan 19, 2012 9:00 AM -
I remember that commercial. LOL.

They seem to do them less and less frequently. I guess because they are running out of people willing to do them.........

Giving NBN a run for its money......

Well, I guess that answers that question! LOL.

I know. Me too. All we ever get is Trouble In Paradise (Great, but..........)

I love Kay (not necessarily her movies) and her clothes! Odd as they usually show some films on her birthday. I guess not this year. Edited by: Hibi on Jan 13, 2012 10:12 AM

Are there any movies today? I think she'd be 108 today.........

So Anne gave you the brush off? LOL. Where exactly did you see her? Just curious. I've discovered Honey West on Metv (Sunday mornings at 3AM!) I'm really enjoying the show.......

Well, I rule the remote in my abode as I live alone! LOL.

Or WHERE! I'm still waiting for an answer. LOL.

Were Mature's "chesties" bigger than Hedys' as Groucho quipped?
-
LOL. No biggie. I knew who you meant.

Van Heflin? You mean Van Johnson? LOL. Yeah, Angela was forbidding and formidable in that black gown scene. It's hard to believe she was only 22 in that movie. I've never heard of any Kate/Angela clash but who knows? I've never seen Keeper of the Flame or Sea of Grass they dont show those 2 very often. I would like to. I think Claudette's dispute centered around money and she walked or something like that. Cant remember exactly why. Possibly she wouldnt work past 5pm and Capra told her to flip off......I know she always regretted getting the boot from the movie........ Oh, Brother! So Lana didnt even want the role? Even more infuriating. Angela just couldnt cut a break at MGM. After State of the Union they just cast her in any old thing. I can understand her frustration.......She had the talent......
