  1. Is it true that none of her films ever made any profit? I find this hard to believe, particularly some of her silents when she was at her peak.........
  2. Agree, Jonny. She makes the most of what's on the page in Gaslight (and there isnt much on the page for that role) She does have screen impact in this first role and that's probably what got her a nomination. Her nomination for Picture of Dorian Grey is much more deserving. Her performance always leaves me teary eyed. One of those characters that viewers remember long after her exit from the film..........
  3. One can be friends without sex entering the picture. Anyway, from what I've read RO's interests lay elsewhere..........(no pun intended).....
  4. LOL. I agree. Who cares how big a star the person was? If they did good work, they deserve some recognition.........
  5. I know. LOL. I've seen pix of him at some of Angela's openings.
  6. Yes, Jonny. Wright, right! Those talking heads segments aren't from TCM though. Someone here mentioned they come from some film history archive/type place........ Little Foxes has been shown a lot on TCM. Cant remember it being on recently though......... Edited by: Hibi on Jan 5, 2012 11:49 AM
  7. Well, I sincerely doubt Angela lobbied RO to be chosen. LOL. She's one of the few surviving actors from Hollywood's golden age so that helps. Angela is busy prepping for another Broadway opening (Gore Vidal's The Best Man) I'm assuming she'll be playing the role Ann Sothern did in the movie version. I think her days as a Broadway lead are over, sadly. (I've read she has trouble remembering her lines......)
  8. Yes, she seems to get no respect. She isnt as well known as she should be, sad to say...........RO seems to like her, but TCM doesnt give her the push they do for other stars..........
  9. Yes. What I enjoy most about them are RO's comments. Sometimes I learn a few new things about the person or the movie I didnt know............
  10. Ah, the 60s. I remember Mitzi Gaynor doing a dance number to Georgy Girl on one show. LOL. I remember watching Angela singing and dancing to Thoroughly Modern Millie, it was one of those rare, great Oscar numbers. It was Mame (and the Life cover story on her) that started me on my Angela fandom) I was quite young then (LOL)........... Edited by: Hibi on Jan 5, 2012 9:51 AM
  11. Agree about Teresa Wright. Not only hasnt she been a SOTM yet, TCM didnt even do a tribute when she died........Oddly, I just watched her last night on a great Alfred Hitchcock episode on Encore Mystery last night......... (11pm eastern during the weekl)
  12. Vera Ralston was the leading lady over at Republic studios in the 40s and 50s where she was married to the boss, Herbert Yates. (Republic being slightly above Monogram and below Columbia in the scheme of things) I cant really comment on what kind of actress she was as I've never seen any of her films ( I think she had a thick accent) but she was never nominated for an Oscar like Angela was 3 times...... but the fact she was married to the boss makes me think she had an easier time of it than Angela did as far as career choices. Before she hit Hollywood she was an ice skater and a pretty good one as I think she won some Olympic medals. Think she was from Czechoslovakia.......... Think her real name was Vera Hruba? Then went by Vera Hruba Ralston for awhile......... Edited by: Hibi on Jan 4, 2012 4:56 PM Edited by: Hibi on Jan 4, 2012 5:03 PM
  13. No kidding. She sang the title song too.........
  14. Yes, Thank you. I hadnt realized they had done Eleanor Parker before. Too bad I hadnt TCM back then......
  15. I'll not argue the fact that Lansbury was in some forgettable movies, particularly late in her MGM career. As a contract player there wasnt a lot she could do about that. But how can you say she her performance did not add to the good in Gaslight or The Picture of Dorian Grey would be the same without her memorable turn as Sybil Vane? And her performance in Manchurian Candidate was superb. Unforgettable.
  16. That's interesting if true and makes the arguing over her placement this month a bit moot......That was before I got TCM so didnt see her. I didnt get TCM for the first couple years it was on.........
  17. I have no insider knowledge but it seems they are reaching out to showcase more people who aren't the typical Hollywood stars that they used to showcase constantly. This may be due to having to recycle the same stars over and over again. I've noticed more "specialty" months the past 5 years or so too where the focus is not on one particular star but a theme or a group....... I know Karl Malden is SOTM for March..............
  18. I agree Lansbury wasnt a big star during her Hollywood period, but I dont think that should disqualify her or anyone else for a SOTM slot if they had talent and a good slate of films they could show. I think TCM is rethinking it's SOTM criteria and I think that's a good thing..........
  19. Well, I'd much rather see someone like Lansbury who has never been SOTM showcased than another go round of Lana Turner or someone else who has been SOTM several times over. There is a whole class of actor/actresses who never quite fit the bill as "stars" (Joan Blondell etc.) or like Mary Astor who did play leads but rarely had to carry a film who could be showcased. Or people like Warren William who got stuck mostly in B movies in leading roles. And there are still quite a few stars who still havent been featured as SOTM (How about Charles Boyer? Joan Fontaine? Or more recent stars like Peter O'Toole?)..........
  20. You know there is a resemblance. LOL.
  21. What HAS happened to Something for Everyone? I feel like one of the few people to have ever seen that neglected gem. I'm not sure it ever got a DVD release (or if it did, its long out of circulation) I cant remember it ever being shown on tv either (maybe the pay cable stations years ago) It's a shame TCM didnt make the effort to include it (maybe they tried) I know the company that released it (National General) has long been out of business, but someone obviously reissued it for VHS at least. I saw it when it came out and never since! (1970 I think.......)
  22. Yes, think it was 3 years or so ago. What demographic havent they covered yet? Guess, we'll see.......
  23. Might have a different meaning depending on the demographic...........
