He does bear some resemblance to his grandmother.........

There are a lot of inconsistencies and holes in the plot if you watch it often enough (and lord knows TCM gives us the privilege at every opportunity! )
-
AWFUL.

That's what he gets for flying with American Airlines. LOL. Didnt they just file for bankruptcy? Anyway, his stint with RO is over. The Essentials has been in reruns for some time now.........

I remember that show. LOL. Wasnt it a spin off of December Bride? I think he was on that show, but not Gladys, he just talked about her...........

Let us know what you think (if you read it) I'm not sure I want to go down the Frances Farmer road again........Such a sad story.

I read her auto-biography, which apparently was written by her good friend (and possible lover according to rumors) after her death. That, too is full of factual errors and the co-author has admitted to sensationalizing certain aspects in order to faciliate a movie deal. So it appears her true story remains to be told........ There was nothing about a lobotomy in the auto-biography, although there were plenty of sensational incidents related to her hospital stays. It also went out of it way to praise her good friend which raised some red flags at the time as she was involved with the book. (cant remember if she was listed as co-author or not, but she was involved in publishing it and I think may have wrote the foreward......) Edited by: Hibi on Dec 7, 2011 2:43 PM

I went to the website the one reviewer recommended about all the factual errors. Mind boggling. I remember the book was well reviewed when it came out. The biggest shocker was she was never apparently lobotomized......... Edited by: Hibi on Dec 7, 2011 2:19 PM

No, my reply wasnt meant for you specifically, I was just replying to the thread. I'm surprised to hear this. The movie was highly fictionalized as well...........

What was so bad about Shadowland? Unless I'm confusing it with another book, I remember reading it back in the 80s and it was a well researched biography of Farmer. The movie was not unfortunately based on the book and based on claims that were never substantiated (the male character in the movie who comes and goes in the story.......). Yes, her mother was very controlling and caused her a lot of grief when she was institutionalized..........

Why are so many of her films "lost"? Didnt Paramount do a good job of saving their silents?
-
Cant wait. I hope there isnt some last minute snafu or schedule change. Wish they'd show more of Swanson's silents............

Thanks! I forgot about that. Now I realize why they made a big point about that earlier in the film....... -

SPOILER QUESTION. My cable company decided to run a weather alert when they were opening the crypt. Can someone tell me what the clue was they found that solved they mystery of who was in it? Thanks. I was glad to finally see the film, but overall I was disappointed in it. Too much of the plot happened "offscreen"....... -

Clark Gable and Loretta Young's daughter has died
Hibi replied to SullivansTravels's topic in General Discussions
Yes, but if Loretta told him to get lost..........It was well known in Hollywood Loretta was not one to cross (LOL)... As an ex-Catholic who grew up with the whole sin/guilt thing, I think I have some insight into Loretta as I've been there (of course it's just theory)... I think she did have maternal feelings for the child as well as responsibility (although the adoption could also been a part of her controlling nature. If SHE adopted the child, rather than others, she controlled the flow of information and choices...) but the child's presence to her was also a constant reminder of HER SIN which prevented her from having a healthy relationship with her. Throw in the lies and subterfuge and the child's identity crisis.........I think it would have been healthier for all invovled if she just had given the child up for adoption. Yes, she did provide well for her, but what was the psychological cost? I've no doubt that Loretta saw her final cancer (wasnt it Uterine or Cervical) as punishment for HER SIN. As I've stated, I've been there................. -
Clark Gable and Loretta Young's daughter has died

I agree about Gable, but if I remember correctly (and I could be wrong) it was Loretta's decision that he stay completely out of it.......To me it was an image problem with Loretta, she did not want her public to see she was less than the saintly image she projected in her later life. (In her younger days, she was not so saintly). It would have still been possible to keep the secret but let her daughter in on it as it appeared to be an open secret in Hollywood anyway........and give Gable the choice as to weather he wanted a relationship with her........ -
Well, if someone dies, that's different! LOL.

I give Loretta credit for having the child, but why deny the fact till after she's dead??? I guess she felt she had to be St. Loretta to the grave. And to not speak to her child after her book came out for 3 years is just stupid. She also did not divulge the information to her until after Gable was dead, thereby preventing her from having any sort of relationship with her father while living. There is a poignant chapter in the book where she writes about Gable visiting her mother when she was a teenager and meeting him, but at the time she did not know he was her father............SAD. -
Not well. LOL. I do check the schedule a lot!
