I reread Joan's memoirs last year and remember her saying she turned down Eternity due to family problems at the time (being a single mother) but regretted it later. I found the constant logo on the screen annoying too. I'm sure it was done to discourage bootlegs. I found the first part of the movie slow and a bit confusing (trying to get all the characters straight). It got much better once they switched to England. I thought Joan Fontaine was great. (Boyer too, though his role was a bit thankless until the last half hr or so). Glad I finally got to see this and I recorded it too. Not a film for everyone, but I loved the lyrical romanticism running through it. THe kind of movie Hollywood doesnt make anymore (or people want to see)....... Wonder if Joan watched it? Hope she's in good health (she turns 94 next month!) I think she's a very underrated actress.......... Edited by: Hibi on Sep 29, 2011 11:04 AM Edited by: Hibi on Sep 29, 2011 1:26 PM

I agree up to a point about these kind of films not being logical, but they really didnt show Hayward's character being put out or suffering in the way characters in Sirk's films did. You never saw her get too upset or emotional about being a mistress and not having her man. (she was too busy) Aside from a little embarassment here and there (at the airport and Vera Miles outing her at the fashion show. I love that scene! )

OMG? She turned down Elmer Gantry?? I never knew that. HUGE career mistake. I agree her 60s output was high on the campometer, ending with the ultimate campfest, Valley of the Dolls! I looked it up later, it was Stolen Hours. I Thank A Fool was another movie from that time. For some reason Stolen Hours is being sold under another title on Amazon (forget now what it is)........ I guess she took what she could get. She was in her mid-40s by then, and probably wasnt considered for the choicest roles (but Gantry was a huge blunder and could've restarted her career!) I think she had retired for awhile in the mid-60s, but came back to replace Judy Garland in Dolls. I think she even played Mame in Vegas after that. But the good roles were behind her...........

Sorry I missed this. Was it on this morning? I havent seen many of Connie's films (I'm sure she'd HATE being called that........)

But does Phyllis Thaxter sing? (I doubt as well as Doris if she did......) I agree, I would love a day of Phyliss Thaxter films. Jan Sterling too. There were many actors who never quite made it as A list stars, but starred in a lot of good films that deserve more recognition.........

I asked that earlier in another thread. I think the movie is in the public domain so I guess it doesnt cost to show it. But is TCM THAT hurting for money they have to repeat a SOTM movie TWICE? They showed it the first night of Kirk this month!

LOL. Ah, the 50s. That's a major weekness in the movie. Why she would settle for Gavin when she could have her pick of any guys on both sides of the Atlantic. Had they kept it in the original time period, it would've made some sense.......

Damn. I meant to watch this but forgot. I havent seen the movie in many years. Keep meaning to read the novel (which is supposed to be better than the film......) but still havent got to it yet......

Odd, as Brian Aherne was married to Joan Fontaine!

Counting the hours! I'm recording it as who knows if it will ever be shown again?

What separates this film from Imitation of Life and other films of this type is Susan Hayward never really suffers. OK, so she cant see her man as often as she likes, but what's not to like about her life? It's not like she's a social outcast. She has a nice country home where she can commit adultery in private; she has a great career; travels the world; wears great clothes. What's not to like?
-
Agree with several posters, this film needed a Douglas Sirk to put it over. Hayward did a whole series of films in this vein in the early 60s culminating with Helen Lawson in Valley of the Dolls (LOL) A lot of scenery chewing, but isnt that why we love her? I forget the title of the Dark Victory remake. Was it I Thank A Fool? Or was that another movie? Then there was Where Love Has Gone, Ada etc..........
-
LOL. Now that's a new twist!

Thanks for that info. I liked that about the Sullavan version (that the wife never entered into the equation and had no real scenes......) now if only TCM would show the Dunne version! (I'm not sure they've ever shown it.........)
-
Yes, he was way younger than Lana as well. But he was hot at Universal at the time and they were building him up. Great looking hunk, but actingwise NSH........ The Hayward version was much too long, and since they made her a successful career woman, the back street sacrifice of the original was really lost. And why would she settle for Gavin anyway when she could have her pick of anyone on both sides of the Atlantic? He must have been great in the sack!
-
I forgot it was on and missed a good 20 mins of the Sullavan version. I hope TCM shows it again. It was obviously the better version of the two. The Hayward version was typical Ross Hunter. Vera Miles livened it up some, but she wasnt in it enough......did they show the wife at all in the Sullavan version? I didnt see her, but I missed the beginning......

Cant we have a day (or night) WITHOUT a theme? I dont get why TCM always has to have some underlying theme all the time. Like films have to be related somehow to watch them???

The Bostonians wasnt shown in widescreen either...........

I missed the beginning but recorded it, so I can watch it again. I thought it a bit steamy for the 30s, but not overly so. Too bad we couldnt see what was cut after the code came in effect. I didnt realize there was a Lee Remick remake! Must've bombed as I dont even remember it. Wish TCM could get ahold of that. I've never read the novel. I may take a crack at it now..........What is the meaning of the title, I wonder? That Temple views the mobsters lair as Sanctuary? Huh? -
I hope TCM will show it again. I'm ticked at myself for forgetting to record it. I saw that it was going to be on and forgot! Although my cable listing showed it as being new, I seem to remember TCM showing it once before? I think it was a celebrity pick or something.........

While I buy that Douglas is telling the truth, it does seem odd that Mank. leaves the ending a bit ambigous. (never having Jeffrey Lynn come back or even call). -
Another veteran who deserves an honorary Oscar, but who will never get one......I think the Academy holds it against her for dumping Hollywood and going to Broadway (and who can blame her?)........
-
Yes, she deserves it. She was a SUTS player not to long ago at least........
