The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
Hibi replied to Mackie45's topic in Films and Filmmakers
I was mistaken about Stewart Stern writing the screenplay, it was Alvin Sargent who has written his share of screenplays (including Julia and Ordinary People among many others). I wanted to check to see if the movie was REALLY THERE on the DVR last night and wound up watching the credits and a bit of the beginning. Cant wait to watch it again this wknd. Many thanks to TCM for resurrecting this gem so I can have it forever! (and no thanks to FOX for not putting it out on DVD!) -
There's some discussion of the movie in the Joanne Woodward thread. I caught it (had seen it many years ago) Agree. Not a good movie. But I'm glad I caught it again for reassessment (wasnt impressed the first time either on tv many years ago) At least this time I saw it in CinemaScope.........
-
Yeah, I knew about Hitch and VisaVision at Paramount, but I never noticed it in the NBNW credits, probably too distracted by Saul Bass' designs during the credits........... Edited by: Hibi on Aug 17, 2011 5:04 PM

That's interesting. I hadnt noticed that........God knows I've seen NBNW so many times! (thanks to it being on heavy rotation on TCM!)
-
Yes, that could be. Not many other companies were using Cinemascope at the time (experimenting with other versions) I know MGM used it at times. Seems odd to see it in a UA film.........
-
Yeah, who knew? I didnt expect this film to even rate a thread, let alone 3 pages! LOL. It's been shown many times..........
-
Oh, brother. Some people need to chill out. I dont mind if threads wander off topic. I find those threads more interesting anyway. If people want it to stay on topic, then make a comment getting it back on topic. No one is forcing anyone to read it..........

I'm sure Jonny was just being his old, sarcastic self....

The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
Hibi replied to Mackie45's topic in Films and Filmmakers
LOL. I'm sure it was a problem for the few theaters that booked it. Especially if they were short on letters....... Effect of Gamma Rays sounds like a science fiction film. I bet there was some head scratching on that by some misled viewers........... -
LOL. Six Degrees of Separation...........

The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
Hibi replied to Mackie45's topic in Films and Filmmakers
LOL. I do remember Newman saying in an interview maybe the name of the film was part of the problem. But the play did have name recognition having a long run Off-Broadway and winning the Pulitzer. That's probably why they kept the title. Can you see that title on a marquee? LOL. I dont remember how it looked when I saw it, but I'm sure it must've been truncated.......... -
Yeah, it's odd that Woodward was fourth billed in this movie. I find it hard to believe Leith was a bigger name at the time............though as far as screen time, they probably have about the same amount. Leith does have the better of the 2 parts.........

LOL. I didnt know that was Count Yorga. I never did see that movie, though I did want to at the time..........

The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
Hibi replied to Mackie45's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Hi, Mackie. Always nice to talk to a fellow Woodward fan. I too felt sympathy for the Beatrice character, though I dont think you were supposed to. Something in Woodward's portrayal (she could never be completely unsympathetic whatever role she played); plus there was something compelling in the us against the world theme of the all female family.... Some critics took Newman and Stern (friend of Joanne and I think Paul who also wrote Rachel, Rachel and Summer WIshes, Winter Dreams for her) for opening up the play (which I never saw) but I dont think it would've worked as a film as it was done on the stage. (Judith Lowery was so compelling as the old lady without speaking a word!) The film never caught on. Fox released it for Christmas! (not your typical Christmas fare) It didnt go into general release until Oscar nomination time (for which it didnt get any!) I dont think Fox really got behind the film after it's initial engagements werent strong. I think it's CRIMINAL they've never released it on DVD! It would be a great film to show as a teaching aid for school children.......... Wasnt their daughter great? I think she should've been nominated too. A shame........ -
Maybe they walked back. LOL.

Yeah, considering Leith and the other guy were only in the place a few minutes, he must've FLOWN there. (considering he had to find the room, get in the room-wasnt it locked?; type the note and be there already in wait. LOL) Maybe Leith and the disc jockey stopped somewhere first on the way back.......Maybe he took her on a tour of the studio? Well, I disagree about Leith, Jonny, but agree about Astor's haircut. A VERY BAD hair day. LOL....... I never really noticed until it was mentioned but it's true about the lack of close ups. I'm sure the film was made on the cheap and close ups do take a lot of time to light........Still for basically a B movie (in color) it's pretty good. I still cant get over the balls of Robert Wagner's character. He kills the one sister, than attempts to marry the other one! Like he'd never be found out? I thought they made a big deal visually about Wagner changing sides for the gunshot, leading you to think they'd bring up it was wrong handed to be suicide, but that was never brought up later (being conveniently out of town for the murder......) LOL! Quite a feat. (Double Razzie nominations!) I thought so. I think the book was that way too. (Twins) I remember it being shown on cable years ago, but I was channel surfing and didnt catch the beginning, so didnt watch it........Wish I could see it. Bet it's very entertaining!

The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
Hibi replied to Mackie45's topic in Films and Filmmakers
YES! JoAnne never got the reconition she deserved for the film (No Oscar nom.) The movie flopped. I was very affected by it when I saw it in theaters. I recorded it for future viewing. WHY didnt they show it in primetime??? It's still not out on DVD! It's no wonder the movie is little known......... -
Thanks. I was wondering what city that was when they were shooting downtown.
-
Didnt Sean Young star in a remake of this before she went wacko? I think she DID play twins in it, so I guess the story was different. I think the movie had a different title. I never did see it.... I never read the book. Jonny, I dont think Virginia Leith is crummy. I like her in this and she's one of the saving graces in THE BRAIN THAT WOULDNT DIE! (one of my favorite bad movies) You have to suspend your disbelief about a lot of stuff in this movie, but for some reason I still enjoy watching it. Where was it filmed? Arizona? Oh, and that title song has to be one of the worst title songs written for a movie. What were they thinking? A Kiss Before Dying? SO romantic! LOL. Edited by: Hibi on Aug 17, 2011 11:33 AM

"Ice Follies of 1939" scheduled for Nov. 18, 2011

Joan on ice skates! What could be campier? For some reason, I keep missing this one. I'll try to remember to record it........... -
LOL. I dont think the problem was her acting, but the vehicles Goldwyn picked for her. I thought she was very good in The Wedding Night, but by then it was obvious she wasnt going to catch on. The first 2 films deep- sixed her......

"Give Me a John Garfield Movie Anyday."
Hibi replied to Ascotrudgeracer's topic in General Discussions
Many people had their careers ruined by the blacklist. I dont think the ramifications and repurcussions have been overstated. It's true Garfield had a bad heart, no proof the stress of being blacklisted caused his death, but I could certainly understand if it did........ -
Which Star is the Most Frequently Aired on TCM?
Hibi replied to JefCostello's topic in General Discussions
LOL. I'm not a fan either (Mickey) I'd say Bogie is probably near the top, if not THE top..... Cagney, Stewart and Gable probably up there too in the top five.........
