  1. Agree, Fred. The movie is pretty dull. Once the characters are introduced, not much happens. And the dialogue just gets repetitive afer awhile. Just regurgitation of what's already been said......It's weird to see Brynner with hair (a toupee?) Was this the only film where he had hair? LOL Interesting trivia question. The movie cant seem to decide when it is set. Present day or the past.....The movie is nothing like the novel, which was complex and multigenerational. Very difficult read......I can see why Faulkner had a booze probelm (LOL)......

  2. Yes, he was connected to several of them. I didnt mind Drowning Pool though. One of the rare times they let Joanne be glamorous, even if it's a small part. Interesting to see Melanie Griffith in her early days as the nymphet. She makes a strong impression..........

  3. LOL. I do remember Newman saying in an interview maybe the name of the film was part of the problem. But the play did have name recognition having a long run Off-Broadway and winning the Pulitzer. That's probably why they kept the title. Can you see that title on a marquee? LOL. I dont remember how it looked when I saw it, but I'm sure it must've been truncated..........

  4.

    Hi, Mackie.

Always nice to talk to a fellow Woodward fan. I too felt sympathy for the Beatrice character, though I dont think you were supposed to. Something in Woodward's portrayal (she could never be completely unsympathetic whatever role she played); plus there was something compelling in the us against the world theme of the all female family....

Some critics took Newman and Stern (friend of Joanne and I think Paul who also wrote Rachel, Rachel and Summer WIshes, Winter Dreams for her) for opening up the play (which I never saw) but I dont think it would've worked as a film as it was done on the stage. (Judith Lowery was so compelling as the old lady without speaking a word!)

The film never caught on. Fox released it for Christmas! (not your typical Christmas fare) It didnt go into general release until Oscar nomination time (for which it didnt get any!) I dont think Fox really got behind the film after it's initial engagements werent strong. I think it's CRIMINAL they've never released it on DVD! It would be a great film to show as a teaching aid for school children..........

Wasnt their daughter great? I think she should've been nominated too. A shame........

  5. Yes, another one they could've shown (maybe it was shown on Brando day? I dont remember) Did we really need to see Signpost to Murder again? Wasnt good the first time!) I read the Sound and Fury long after I saw the movie. Except for the characters, you'd never have known it was based on the novel........Ritt had better luck with The Long, Hot Summer....based on some of the short stories......

  6. Yeah, considering Leith and the other guy were only in the place a few minutes, he must've FLOWN there. (considering he had to find the room, get in the room-wasnt it locked?; type the note and be there already in wait. LOL)

Maybe Leith and the disc jockey stopped somewhere first on the way back.......Maybe he took her on a tour of the studio? :D

Well, I disagree about Leith, Jonny, but agree about Astor's haircut. A VERY BAD hair day. LOL.......

I never really noticed until it was mentioned but it's true about the lack of close ups. I'm sure the film was made on the cheap and close ups do take a lot of time to light........Still for basically a B movie (in color) it's pretty good. I still cant get over the balls of Robert Wagner's character. He kills the one sister, than attempts to marry the other one! Like he'd never be found out? I thought they made a big deal visually about Wagner changing sides for the gunshot, leading you to think they'd bring up it was wrong handed to be suicide, but that was never brought up later (being conveniently out of town for the murder......)

  7. LOL! Quite a feat. (Double Razzie nominations!) I thought so. I think the book was that way too. (Twins) I remember it being shown on cable years ago, but I was channel surfing and didnt catch the beginning, so didnt watch it........Wish I could see it. Bet it's very entertaining! :D

  8. I finally was able to watch Our Very Own which I'd never seen before. Ann was heartbreaking in it (I think her last film) I kept hoping she'd show up at the graduation, but this being the 50s, the film had to show how much better off Ann Blyth was with her suburban middle class parents rather than the low class Ann.....Was interesting how they skirted around Blyth's birth. It was obvious she was an out of wedlock baby, but they never came out and said it. That TV installation intro went on FOREVER! What were they thinking? Way too long. Definitely worth a look for Ann. A nice send off for her and what might have been..........

  9. For some reason, my long post disappeared. Was anyone watching yesterday? I was home so I was able to watch more films than usual. Overall a disappointing line up except for a few films (either lackluster vehicles, or films focused on other stars) I was happiest about Effect of Gamma Rays, a TCM premiere, and one of JoAnne's best performances (and not very well known) I havent seen it in decades (last time I checked Fox still hasnt issued it on DVD...), But WHY show it at 2AM? I'd wish they had shown it in primetime instead of Kiss Before Dying which TCM has showed a lot. And why no 3 Faces of Eve? They rented the mediocre Rally Round the Flag, Boys! At least Sound and the Fury had a literary pedigree (though the film is a misfire, I was glad to have seen it again) Still hoping TCM will show No Down Payment someday. I havent seen that one since it's network showing several eons ago. Does Fox Channel ever show it?

  10. Didnt Sean Young star in a remake of this before she went wacko? I think she DID play twins in it, so I guess the story was different. I think the movie had a different title. I never did see it.... I never read the book. Jonny, I dont think Virginia Leith is crummy. I like her in this and she's one of the saving graces in THE BRAIN THAT WOULDNT DIE! (one of my favorite bad movies)

You have to suspend your disbelief about a lot of stuff in this movie, but for some reason I still enjoy watching it. Where was it filmed? Arizona?

Oh, and that title song has to be one of the worst title songs written for a movie. What were they thinking? A Kiss Before Dying? SO romantic! LOL.

  11. While catching up on Ann's films over the wknd, I was reminded how WB wasted her talent. In most of the films, she was a supporting player, often in a thankless role. (Side Streets, Gentlemen Are Born etc....) The meaty roles (3 On A Match) were few and far between. I dont think she ever carried a film on her own (except I Was An American Spy much later) In Gentlemen Are Born, she doesnt even get to react when something bad happens to her boyfriend. It all happens offscreen and she leaves town (no goodbyes) I'm glad TCM gives these forgotten (not by us!) stars some time to shine and be discovered........

I guess it was her husband not her boyfriend in Gentlemen Are Born......someone mentions she left town in an off hand comment.....
