I remember Patricia Hitchcock saying Frenzy was the only film of her dad's she wouldnt let her children see. I think Hitchcock was trying to keep up with the times as films were becoming more graphic and violent..........Several other films he wanted to make during this period were nixed at Universal due to subject matter.........The deal he made with them made him wealthy, but he also lost some of his autonomy.......I agree Frenzy is more shocking than Psycho, at least to me. The violence in Psycho is not as graphic due to editing.......It couldnt be back then.........

UNBELIEVABLE! I guess Chaplin was still on Hollywood's SH-- list then.......

I didnt realize Countess From Hong Kong was a very old script of Chaplins'. That could explain a lot of things. What kind of part did Tippi have in it? I'm assuming it was supporting? I know the movie flopped (wasnt it Chaplin's last film?) but the song he wrote for it (This Is My Song) was a monster hit for Petula Clark. Was it even nominated for best song? (I dont remember......)

Well, not to turn this thread into a Julie Andrews war, but she doesnt do much for me either. We all have different tastes.

Yes, I like Family Plot. Not a great film, but superior to many of his others.......particularly in his 60s/70s period.......

Well, I'm a fan of Pajama Game too. I dont know why it isnt a better known Day film either. TCM doesnt show it as much as her other films.
Finance, Day wore a slip in a scene from Pillow Talk, and it was quite compelling!

Yes, I know. Too bad. She thought her fans would object to her playing it too...

Yes, back to TIppi! I also caught one of her intros last night (didnt watch any of the films. Ugh!) and noticed she was standing. I'm not so sure she's had a ton of plastic surgery. The camera came in pretty close. (she certainly doesnt have the Joan Rivers look!) Agree about Melanie. She ruined her face. There is a slight resemblance between the two (at least before). I've always liked Tippi's voice. It hasnt changed much. Pity she and Hitch parted ways.

Yes, I remember Melanie in Night Moves and The Drowning Pool. Which were made back to back. She was good in both. Then she disappeared for awhile........She was VERY young then..........
I didnt realize Melanie was in the Harrod Experiment. But I do remember Don Johnson. He was a **** even then. (the movie was pretty bad......)

OMG! I didnt realize Melanie was that old. But she did make her first films in the mid 70s.......

They never really developed Mabel's character or integrated her into the show, which was too bad. (Maybe she was too busy doing Bewitched?) She was always seen as an adjunct to Howard. You never saw her hanging out with Aunt Bea or Clara for example, or any rivalries with them that I can remember. Then they just wrote her out as getting married and moving (that wasnt developed at all)...........
-
LOL. Well she did smoke in her younger years........
-
LOL. I can relate. Mine must be close to 100% now. Doubt if I could even record an hr show. I just dont have the time to watch in the summertime or am just felled by the heat. I need to this wknd!!
-
Thank you. So she made her first film way back in 1950? So much for all that publicity about Hitchcock "discovering" her. Guess that was all hype!

WIsh I could say the same. LOL!

There's hardly a day I wont be watching, but I'm most interested in Linda Darnell, Joanne Woodward, Ann Dvorak, Paulette Goddard and Joan Blondell. Darnell, Goddard and Woodward dont turn up too often on TCM! Dvorak and Blondell are usually in the early morning hours........ I NEED TO FREE UP SOME DVR SPACE FAST!!!!
-
OK. I understand your point now.......Maybe. But Tippi's reign as a leading lady was relatively brief........
Does anyone know what Tippi's real first name is?

No kidding. LOL. Joan Rivers is another one.......

It's called ACTING. I'm sure Doris could've pulled it off. And perhaps made the character more sympathetic than Bancroft......
-
Speaking of the Chaplin connection, has anyone seen Countess from Hong Kong? I never have. It's rarely shown on TCM. Do you think it deserved the critical bashing it received at the time?
-
Tippi was probably a toddler when Ox-Bow incident was filmed. She isnt THAT old!
-
Well, good for her, TopBilled. I thought she had retired long ago. I know that animal preserve takes a ton of money (just for the food alone) to run (I saw some bit about it on some nature show some years back) and it runs on donations, so that's probably why she's still seeking work.......I think its the ROAR foundation?
-
Agree. Doris was quite sexy (when the film allowed her to be). I think she would've made a great Mrs. Robinson, I wish she had accepted the role. Could've sent her career in a new direction..........

Rare Josephine Baker film tonight 7/28/11

Thanks for the reminder. I saw it on the schedule yesterday and already forgot about it. Hopefully I wont be taking my umpteenth shower of the day at that time.........
