  1. Since the HLN thread is locked now (why limit threads when a great star dies?) just wanted to say they DID devote considerable time later in the day to E.T.s passing. I was surprised, as I thought they'd just give it a passing glance. For once they did good! There were many shows devoted to the story later that night (on cable news)........

  2. I'm sure E.T. did not get involved in AIDS work to keep her name in the papers or for publicity. As I remember she was the ONLY celebrity in the early days doing anything. She did more than contribute, she RAISED MONEY. Hundreds of millions. And awareness. More than she could have contributed personally and privately. She used her celebrity to help others. Just as her contemporary, Audrey Hepburn, used hers to help the world's children. Sadly Audrey's life was cut short at 63. At least E.T. lived longer to make a difference.......

As for Debbie, she and E.T. mended fences decades ago and even starred in a tv movie together years ago. Both she and Carrie (as someone else mentioned) were on cable newshows last night......

  3. Agree. The word STAR seemed to be made just for her. The 60s? Hell, even in the 80's you'd be hard put to pick up a magazine and not see her in it! It's only in the last decade or so when her health started to fail that she started to slow down........

  4. No we wont. I feel like another chapter in Hollywood has closed. A big one. And a chapter in my life. NO ONE was as big as ET during her prime (when I was growing up). No one today can compare. She was the last of her kind. I admire her for all she did for AIDS charities. I've been in tears all day today. Just cant believe it.........

  5. Hopefully they'll make a day of it like they did with Paul Newman, Jack Lemmon and some others, though it will be a melancholy affair with me. I hadnt realized she'd died. I saw this thread and wondered why TCM would be doing a tribute since her birthday was last month. Then I went over to the other forum and saw the notice. I'm still in SHOCK! She's been declared dead so many times, I keep hoping this will be another case...........She was the last, great Hollywood star. There'll never be another of her kind (on or offscreen)........

  6. I have many of her recordings. She must be in her 80s by now. Still glamorous I'm sure. I've recorded the movie, but havent watched it yet......She had a small part in The Strange One (not sure if that's the exact title) with Ben Gazzara around the same time period. No singing in that!

  7. While I agree that actors can be insulated from reality (especially if they live in Hollywood), many of them have gone to college and acting school. I dont necessarily view them as less intelligent than anyone else (or more). Most actors barely get by. And many of them who do get by put their money where their mouth is (contributing millions to charities or volunteering). Sandra Bullock for example. We'll have to agree to disagree (I dont want to hijack the thread).....

  8. I dont agree with that thesis at all. Most actors (those few who make it) had to work their way up. They know what it's like to be poor and struggling. So they identify with so-called "liberal" issues. (I'm not saying all of them do.....)

  9. Although the film has it's campy aspects, I dont think Aldrich's intention was to make a campy movie. I think people view the film more that way now than when it was released (I cant really say as I was too small at the time to take much notice). There are moments of pathos, regret and irony. And like all movies about Hollywood, it shows the dark side.........I'm sure Bette Davis imitators had a field day, but not most of the audience.
