  1. I dont dislike N by NW but I wouldnt mind them giving it a rest for awhile. They must have a pretty good deal with both films as they are both on a lot, but N by NW seems to be on a lot more during primtime hours than Zhivago........

  2. $3,700???? That's a lotta swear words! ****. I bet Loretta Young didnt rake in that much (she had a cuss word jar on her sets too, though the dollar was worth more back then. LOL)

From what I've read Leo has had a track record of weird speeches on previous award shows (which I didnt watch) so I guess she had to top herself. I'm sure the Academy will be ready next year if she's a presenter for supporting actor. Still cant figure out why they chose KIRK DOUGLAS to give the actress award.......

  3. Thanks for looking those up. The reason those films were up for best picture and not in the foreign language category was because either they were not submitted by their countries or they were not chosen to compete in the foreign language category. As I said, any film can compete for best picture as long as it plays in L.A. for a week during that particular year. Obviously a foreign film has to be really popular to have any chance for that and it rarely happens....

It's possible (as you noted ) to be nominated in both categories (if your country submits the movie for foreign film consideration and its picked) and it plays in L.A. for at least a week during the competing year.

  4. Yeah, would be interesting getting the lowdown on who gets tickets to these events. There must be a pecking order. I'm sure guests of the nominees and presenters probably takes up a good portion of the audience, but who makes up the rest? Can the public actually purchase tickets? Are some given away to head honchos and VIPS?

  5. A foreign film can compete in the best picture category, provided it plays in L.A. for a week during that year. The foreign films in the foreign film category are chosen by the particular country to compete and are screened for Academy members (and arent necessarily put into release before the ceremony) I think there are several instances when foreign films were nominated for best picture. Z for one. I know there are others......but it's pretty rare.

I think there was at least one foreign film that competed in both categories? Maybe more than one? Not necessarily the same year. It's a confusing rule. I remember Day for Night one year was up for Best Foreign film and the next year one of the actresses was up for supporting (the year Ingrid Bergman won) I think because the film was not eligible in other categories (due to not playing L.A.)......
