He should've won for Lion In Winter. And was deserving for Lawrence of Arabia too. If Gregory Peck hadnt been up that year, I'm sure he'd have won............
-
YES. LOL. Never to be seen again................
-
I just saw him on the show the other night. Uncle Leo lives on!
-
Yes, I'm sure that was the case. Studios put their clout behind what film of theirs they wanted to win. And their employees were supposed to vote accordingly. I'm sure Paramount put everything behind Going My Way. Double Indemnity didnt have a chance..........
-
I've been watching for this and will be recording it! I dont get why this is being thrown off in the afternoon when this is a long awaited TCM premiere. Very strange!
-
There were many people blacklisted who were not Communist party members. Just because they were on some list someone made (never mind how they got there).....
-
I think Shirley Booth's last Broadway appearance was in a musical flop of Lilies of the Field (I think it was called Look to the Lilies) Sadly, I dont think it was ever recorded (playing like a week)......
-
GREAT! Better late than never.

-
Yes, I know. By that time they'll figure why bother. Dont die in Feb if you want a TCM tribute!
-
I'm not defending Shirley Booth because I like her as a person. I think she's great in the movie and I like the movie. I know little about Shirley or her private life. (I hated Hazel and never watched it if I could help it........) It's not a movie perhaps for everyone, but I think she fully deserved her award......
-
I hadnt heard this. Another one gone.
I doubt TCM considers her big enough to have a tribute. -
LOL. No, it has to be an actress. I'm stumped. 21 films? I'm figuring it is a supporting actress as they'd have more opportunities.........
-
Can anyone help me with a trivia question? What actress appeared in 21 movies that were nominated for best picture? I find it hard to believe that ANYONE could be in that many best pictures, but I guess it must be true. Anyone have any idea? I'm assuming it must be a supporting player.........the actress isnt necessarily nominated in the best pictures she appears in......

Well, he was an alcoholic and he mentioned he **** his money away on alcohol and didnt go back to school. So he was probably afraid to leave, but resentful at the same time. He depended on her....
-
LOL. It never would have left............
-
LOL. Well the film won a big Oscar. I'm sure other actresses were interested in it.......
-
I dont think so, but I dont really know. We werent really friendly with them, but I remember seeing the dog outside playing often. I think of that dog now when I watch the movie........I'm not completely sure, but I think my grandmother mentioned the movie when I asked about the dogs' name once (since I'd never heard it before) but my memory might be free associating over time......

Well, Bette said in later interviews that she turned down the part. So I wonder what's the truth? In addition to their lost youth, Sheba symbolizes their lost child too. You can see it in her face when she talks about the dog. So sad. For awhile Terry Moore fills the role for them, then they are left alone at the end. Such a sad story.......Shirley Booth is so great. I cant picture anyone else in the role after seeing it...........
-
Bette turned down the part because she felt Shirley Booth should do the role and she wasnt right for the part. She was right. The film may have helped her career though.

Speaking of childhood, MissWonderly, a neighbor's dog down the street was named Sheba when I was growing up. I'm sure it was no coincidence as it's not a common name for a dog. I wonder how many dogs were named that after the movie? It was a WHITE dog too........(this was the 1950s-1960s)

I seem to remember Joanne Woodward playing this role in a tv adaptation. Didnt she star with Olivier? I wish that were broadcast again or was available on DVD........
-
No, you're not. I thought Julie Harris was over the top in Member of the Wedding. While I agree about Terry Moore (cant believe she was nominated in this, I hadnt even realized) and Burt being too young (otherwise he was fine in the role) I disagree with everything else Jonny wrote (Sorry, Jonny!) I dont think opening up the play would've helped at all and Shirley deserved her award. I hadnt seen the film in a long time and I still cried during parts of it......Streetcar wasnt really opened up as a film and it's still powerful. I think Burt is far less effective in Rose Tattoo (love Anna though.......)
-
Yes. She looked good too.
-
I think Bette was right in her opinion Virginia Mayo would've been better casting, but I doubt the movie would have been as entertaining.........
