Nuance? Dunaway played to the 5th balcony! LOL. The script tried to make her sympathetic, but it didnt really work. Plus the terrible dialog, script and direction.......I doubt any actress could've made it work though........
-
Well, Virginia Woolf really pushed the limits in 1966. They didnt use the F word, but just about everything else. Moon is Blue was really nothing. Boring movie as well. How far we've come. LOL.
-
Agree. Joan didnt look bad. Dont understand why she felt the need to "hide"......
-
Well, the high drama moments (No Wire Hangers! Get Me the Axe!) occurred when Joan's career was in freefall and she was unemployed after MGM dumped her and she was living alone and stuck at home all day with a lot of free time. If she'd been drinking all day, I can see stuff like that happening....
-
I thought Faye was over the top and unintentionally campy. The script was terrible, so she didnt have much to work with. She's gone on record saying she wished she'd never done the film. I think the film damaged Joan more than the book did......a few months after the release it started showing up at midnight movies with audience participation. The rest is history....
Even Christina hated the movie (LOL)...

I bet they dont. They probably consider her a contemporary star. I wouldnt mind seeing them though......
-
Well, the will and those cryptic words were the final straw according to Christina. I would've been **** off as well. I'm not sure I would've wanted to air the family dirty laundry, but I'm sure it was cathartic (and a financial windfall which I'm sure helped ease the pain) So Cathy sued Christina for defamation of character? Now that's funny. She's barely mentioned in the book.......I bet that died quickly on the vine.........
-
Christina sure is a lightning rod. LOL! This only goes to prove my point. Even now after all these years, people still dont believe her. Had she written a book when Joan was alive, Joan would've denied it. Few people, if any, would've come to her defense (besides her brother). I can sympathize with the frustration of children of famous, powerful people. Who's going to believe your story? Especially if it differs from their public persona........
-
I'm not the one who brought up Bette Davis believing Christina, someone else did. And I agree it makes no difference what she thought/believed happened. The grandson agreed on the show that the strapping in at night DID happen. WHY it happened is a matter of debate. We'll have to agree to disagree about Joan as a mother and housekeeper, because I'm not going to be dissuaded. It's all she said/he said over a lot of incidents and it's up to the individual to decide who they are going to believe........It's only natural for the one side of the family to come to Joan's defense if they didnt see her act that way, but that doesnt mean it DIDNT happen. Like I said, I like Joan as a star and an actress and admire how she pulled herself up from nothing............
-
Yes, I know. But there were other people who supported some of Christina's claims. Including some in the recent tv program.....I actually believe both accounts (both branches of the family) Just because Joan acted differently with the younger kids, doesnt mean the earlier behavior didnt happen.......

I will read it. But Spoto didnt live with Crawford or have her as a mother.......

My, the Joan apologists are out in full force today. LOL. To answer your question, no, I missed Bette's appearance on Donahue, but I did see her once with Johnny Carson after the stroke. She looked pitiful, but she was her old self and very funny. It took guts to pull herself together and move on like that in public. She could've took the Joan route and stayed in her apartment........

LOL. True. I found it the height of perversity that with all her money Joan could only spare a piddly 77,500 for the 2 daughters she DID like, while giving millions to strangers. I guess it was in line with her "pay as you go" philosophy. She didnt want her kids living high on the hog on her money. The program stated one daughter had to live on welfare for awhile and the other sold Joan's Oscar (I'm sure Joan wouldnt have liked that. LOL) to get some money. Sheesh. Charity begins at home, Joan!

-
Could a drunken Joan survived the humiliation? (provided she could get herself together for a press conference) Like I said, had Joan not tried to have the last word in her will, she may not had her reputation besmirched. But other people had started talking anyway by that point........
-
****! Sad but true.
-
HOW AWFUL. Yes, in the 70s's she was an up and coming star. For some reason she didnt really last. (wasnt due to lack of talent). The news didnt even cover this. SAD!

Agree. There wasnt really anything shocking about BD's book (well maybe the fake suicide). Mostly it was Bette, being Bette. Being overbearing, overdrinking and meddling (hating her son-in law)..... I laughed more than I shuddered........She treated BD very well financially and really loved her. Then when she's a dying woman BD let's it all hang out. She could've at least waited till she died.......
-
Well, Joan's grandson (Cathy's son, I think) also appeared. I'm sure he was paid also......
-
Well, if you believe Christina's account (and I do) what reason does she have to celebrate Joan's life? Joan made her life miserable. Had Joan not cut her out of the will with those cryptic phrases (is no one answer to what she may have meant) she may have never written her side. Yeah, she trashed her mom, but I cant really blame her. Dont get me wrong, I like Joan, (as an actress) but I wouldnt have wanted her for a mother.
I give Christina more of a pass than BD though. BD had a far better life and Bette was old and sick when she wrote that book and she knew how devastated she would be when it came out (another holier than thou Bible thumper...) There's nothing really shocking in BD's book, Bette comes off like Bette. Let's face it, many Hollywood stars werent great parents......
-
She didnt win. The other sisters decided to settle out of court because they didnt want all the publicity. I thought Joan died of cancer? I've read about Joan's pity stories. I've also read she refused to see her son and wouldnt even open the door for him. I'm sure the show's producers wanted a famous case to start the series with, so why not Joan? They did try to keep it balanced....
-
I enjoyed it and am looking forward to seeing the rest. Most series about Hollywood history start with DW Griffith or Chaplin. They gave a good overview of how it all started......
-
I guess we'll have to wait and see........
-
I hadnt known Christina sued over the will. The estate settled out of court and awarded her and Christopher the same amount as the 2 sisters. Christina said she didnt take any of the money and gave it to her brother. She said she did it for him because he needed the money. Was an interesting show. Gave both sides their say...........
-
LOL. That's funny.........

Frankly my dear, I don't give a Clark Gable!

I remember the big to-do over Kiss Me, Stupid. It's still pretty racy seen today (the concept, I mean. Wasnt any nudity or bad language)
