Too Much Mickey Rooney, Silents and Foreign language
johnbabe replied to ElCid's topic in General Discussions
Mickey Rooney is NO Barrymore! Those pictures he made for the most part are dated, corny and aimed at a generation long lost- it is simply put "forgettable B films" his is no classic and nor are his so-called films -
i agree, the 4th chapter should have at least shown John Gilbert, he was the screen lover when Valentino died, his voice was not too high (some feel it was played with by the sound people, since many feel the powers that be were out to destroy him, some say it was his famous fight with the MGM big man over Garbo, etc, or that he was just too big, i personally love his movies, silent and talking......also how can TCM show Anna Christie with Garbo's talking debut, and show scenes from the Jazz Singer and NOT show these 2 landmark films after the showing of the 4th Chapter of this series...it make no sense whatsoever! also, how can they leave out Crawford out of the MGM story? they never even mention Norma Shearer, Wallace Beery, Cary Grant.......give me a break!

i do not agree that Bow was the biggest star, if she was, very few people know who she is today, although lots of people today know who Chaplin, Garbo, Swanson and Valentino were. they apparently had enduring quality.
-
yes, that would be nice, and did you ever see the German language version of Anna Christie with Garbo, it is on the flip side of the DVD...it is much better and directed better too, give it a try!

Too Much Mickey Rooney, Silents and Foreign language

Mickey Rooney movies (except Boys Town and The Human Comedy) for the most part are not classics, they were for the most part low budget quick films....Andy Hardy is no classic character! -
Silent movies are wonderful lovely works of art, it was completely different from talkies and stage acting, that is why some stars could not make the transition. TCM is a classic movie station, the silents were the oldest and lovely classic films, so you do not like them, so go the local movie theatre today and go see some of the grand films (all computer generated and with actors that cannot say more than 1 sentence at a time) and see stars that are lovlier and more handsome than Gable, Garbo, Crawford, Heptburn, Taylor, i cannot list them all, so go spend you $20.00 or so and go see some of the future classics out there today.....also of note, while 1939 is the greatest year of the motion picture, this past year is going down as the worst year in motion picture history......more power to TCM and the silents that a still being shown and loved today!

I hope we can purchase Moguls and Movie Stars on DVD soon, is there any info yet on this happening?
-
many a great film was made in silent....why does not TCM have a Silent Essentials right after the Essentials on Saturday....lots of people cannot endure the late night schedule of Silent Sunday Nights.....and many "talking" classics were remakes of the Silent original films, and lots of people are not aware of this....e. g. Ben Hur, The Hunchback of Notre Dam, Anna Karenina (Love), even The Wizard of Oz....there are so many of them, I do not have the room in this blog to name them all, but you get the general idea, silent films were a delightful art form of light, animation and expression of the Faces! it is a beautiful lost art...keep them in the forefront!

I love this series, it is just so wonderful to see the old silents, which I love. However, on the third installment, when they speak of Garbo, they completely left out the part that Mauritz Stiller was her mentor, and he was her director, when LBM met both of them, and by the way, her name had been changed at the age of 18 legally, before MGM, and the name Garbo was suggested by Stiller. I do like the frankness of the documentary, and am looking forward to more in epidode 4, I do not know the accuracy of other statements in the documentary, but it is very enjoyable nontheless. Thank you TCM for this treat!

RKO: The studio that wouldn't die
johnbabe replied to MyFavoriteFilms's topic in General Discussions
this is the studio THAT SHOULD HAVE DIED! -
wow if they found The Divine Woman with Garbo, what a blast that would be, it is disgusting that this film and other MGM's were lost in a fire, well that is what happened after LBM was no longer there! thank goodness this is the only one of Garbo's films that are lost!

Disappointed with movies from 60's through 80's
johnbabe replied to ElCid's topic in General Discussions
give us more Crawford, Davis, Garbo, Cooper, Hepburn, Bogart, Tracey, silent films too! -
yes, i truly agree, and i think the decline is in showing too many newer films, let AMC show them, we want classics that are really classics staring with the classic people! i wish TCM would stop showing classics at ridiculous times of the day or night, they are not going to get younger viewers like that, they need to show the classics in real time to get the younger audience to understand and love the films as we do!
-
this movie is so boring it is unwatchable!
-
i think elizabeth allan is in Camille - i think she plays Nichette - so she is not that unknown.
-
i think this whole film was silling, stupid and boring - these people in the film were ok for the london stage, but presented this way, they were ridiculous for American taste!
-
HOW ABOUT HIGHLIGHTING RAMON'S FILMS FOR A DAY, HIS SILENTS (BEN HUR) FOR EXAMPLE AND OF COURSE HIS TALKIES, HE WAS SUCH A HANDSOME GUY AND GOOD ACTOR TOO.
-
DID ANYONE OUT THERE SEE THIS FILM THE OTHER EVENING ON TCM WHAT AN UNUSUAL FILM, WITH CARROLL BAKER, IT WAS NOT FOR EVERYONE'S TASTE OR VIEWING BUT A GREAT FILM, VERY DIFFERENT IN ITS STORY LINE, FILMED, I THINK, ENTIRELY IN THE BRONX AND MANHATTAN OF 1961, VERY DISTURBING AT TIMES, BUT I AM GLAD I STUCK WITH IT. THANK YOU TCM!

this is a crusade, this forum is for passionate lovers of film, and Novarro was one of the best and the earliest of them all, watch him in the original Ben Hur!
-
i love robert taylor, he was an excellent actor and it is disgusting to start up this garbage again after all these years, some people here do not love classic movies, they just hate the people who made them!
-
i love Bob Taylor, what do you think of that!
-
he was sooooooo handsome and soooooooooooooo cute, both innocent and sexy.....gives us more of him on TCM!
-
the red lily is such a lovely film, Novarro is just so wonderful and gorgeous, i saw it before too , but needed to enjoy it again!
