a film of ingrids bergmans you amy never see

also, why do you not mention WWII - believe me Garbo she was around - as i have posted, there was more to her than you think - at least she did not give scandal by having 2 out of wedlock pregnancies, leaving her daughter with her father in the US and carrying on openly with Rosselini, Garbo kept her life private and did not hurt anyone or their reputation...Bergman can never ever be compared to Garbo in movies or real life...also she Bergman played Joan of Arc and it was a complete and utter failure, Garbo always wanted to play Joan of Arc but felt that she was unworthy....... -

they have compared Garbo's performance in Camille to Duse and Bernhardt! what i meant about Bergman's range is that her characters do not change within the film, she has no change in the type she is playing, catch Bette Davis too, by the way she said that Garbo had something no else ever had on the screen, LB Mayer said there were only 2 pure actors to ever be on the screen - Spencer Tracy and Garbo.....i could go on, Bergman always played love scenes like a lovesick dog, try and watch more Garbo films, like Anna Christie, Inspiration, Susan Lenox, Romance - ah, you do not see these films so much on TCM - and my personal favorite, As You Desire Me - a play by Pirandello, i have done my research...also check out some of the silents, you will be amazed, and she did not have any command of the English language as Bergman did, and in fact in the early talkies, she did not even understand the meanings of the words she was saying, her acting was method acting which she learned from Stiller, her mentor, which was far ahead of its time! Garbo played love scenes with seduction and yet vulnerability - by the way Garbo was even Hepburn's favorite actress! -

she did love him, that is why she did not use him, but she stood him because i think she could not make commitments, also, there was on a website, the petition to become a US citizen filed by Garbo in 1940 - 41 - but it is very strange that it was not followed through until 1951 - perhaps her recently reported wartime work for the Allies in certain capacities (remember she was fluent in Swedish, German, French and English) she could be most useful, and the fact that she was still a citizen of a neutral country virtually gave her certain flexibility others would not have, i do not think Winston Churcill would have visited her often in NYC after the war if she was not on his side, and JFK had her at the White House several days before his tragic death, so, Garbo was an honest person, and for that i think she was misunderstood. -
one of the great jokes is bergman playing a nun! how opposite can it get!

you have to realize that Garbo was one of the very few silent screen stars to make the transition to sound and be better for it....Camille is considered the greatest screen performance by an actress by most film critics...Bergman's characters never change in her films, she had no range or dimension, can you picture her trying to be funny in the classic Ninotchka, or dying in Camille or in the Flesh and the Devil with Gilbert, GIVE ME A BREAK, and you should do some reading my friend and check on the recently exposed undercover work Garbo did for the Allies, she was quiet about her life, but accomplished much, she was involved in saving Jewish children from Nazi Europe with her friend, Salka Vertel, and much has come to light about her activities, also, when LBMayer threatened to deport her, she could have become an American citizen by marrying Gilbert, (at that time you could) she chose not to use Gilbert for her own gains, and became a citizen when it was appropriate! -
i do not like ingrid bergman, the first choice for casablanca was hedy lamarr, she turned it down, ingrid was a grabber and tried to take any part she could, she took our us money and ran out, others (whom i am not naming here, became us citizens and made this country their home).

i think they were trying to teach us morals, and they did, that is what is wrong with your crummy **** public school systems.

well, i went to catholic school in jamaica, queens, which was every bit as tough as brooklyn, i went in the 1950's to 1965 perhaps it is the time frame that we differ on, let me know.

why are you talking about donnie and marie osmond films, i am not a breen supporter nor do i like the codes they implicated in the 30's which ruined many films, i am not a prude, i am merely stating some comparisons, duh, you do not like Garbo, too bad, for you, hail TCM -
hey, you know what i went to Catholic schools all my school years, high school, and I DID HAVE NUNS JUST LIKE IN THE BELLS, I DO NOT THINK IT IS NICE TO SAY SUCH THINGS ABOUT NUNS! but then again, you like Ingrid!

hi, i am delighted by your post, some people on this site think that i give Garbo too much attention, well for their information, in 1938 (when Ingrid was making films in Nazi Germany) Garbo was well aware of the threat of war and what was going on, she engaged the help of MGM to get her family out of Sweden which they did, she was also strongly against anti-semitism and helped many Jewish children get out of harm;s way in Europe, she worked with her friend, Salka Vertel, so Garbo was not naive about Hitler, she was a Swede, not all of them were not aware........Garbo had principles - she knew what was going on! -
Overrated/Underrated Movies-The Nineties
johnbabe replied to skimpole's topic in General Discussions
all of the films in the '90's are over rated except for Titanic, which is a masterpiece in the old true sense of the word! -
yes, you put it so eloquently, that Garbo was a classic beauty not the accessible pretty girl that is real, her aloofness was attributed to, now, with emotional issues that there was no way to deal with in those days, today, someone like can be treated, thank you for reply.

oh, i watched a film on Valentino the other night - he really was gorgeous, could have seen myself with him on a "date" i luv John Gilbert, he is my silent crush John Barrymore too!

Greta was only dancing to add to her scenes, Ginger was a professional dancer in the first place, it is has been said that Garbo was not pretty, but that her face was perfect, the bone structure eye sockets, etc, were loved by the camera men who could and did photograph her in all lighting and on all sides, she was more like a statue, than the girl next door, no one ever put her in that catagory..joan crawford was awed by Garbo and all the photographers of that time even put out books on their photography of her, she had perfect features, perfect bone structure, this is a fact, i am merely stating that, i luv Ginger and the rest of them, but frankly, next time you see one of these gals in a film, see that they are not filmed from all angles, look at the film as a piece of art, then you see that there are all types of beauty, some not perfect, some perfect, it all depends on your vision of it. however, if you go by facts, her face has been called the The Face of the Century, because of its perfection. she did not wish to be perfect, it just happened.....her face was great for the camera because you put your own thoughts on it...watch the end of Queen Christina, that is a classic in the film industry, even to this day. well, according to Louis B. Mayer, there were only two: Tracey and Garbo!
-
yes, i agree, but joan loved acting and loved being a star, and that is why she went with the flow, Garbo on the other hand was out of place in hollywood (she said so herself as a young girl) and never really dealt with being a star, she was upset with the way hollywood treated artists, joan on the other hand craved the attention, Garbo hated it, but in the end we love what they left us, great acting, many times their films were beneath them both, but their presence made the films precious.
-
for your information, i respectfully address you to the motion picture authorities, Garbo is named as the no. 1 silent star with Chaplin of all time and No. 5 in talking pictures, she was named in the Guiness Book of Records as the most beautiful woman who ever lived in 1955.......her beauty has long been renowed, - we are talking about 1925, Garbo only arrived here from Sweden in July of 1925......she had not made her mark yet. thank you.
-
yes, i have the book, the 4 faces are truly fabulous, but i do think Joan went through the most changes of all 4 of the beauties, with Garbo, i think, going through the fewest, she always was her own look, i think the studious as time went by, made Joan look hard and they also made her look older than she was, Garbo got out before Hollywood could totally destroy her!
-
yes after 1925 a new woman appeared on the screen - Garbo and the face of beauty was suddenly redefined in Hollywooid.
-
Garo in two faced woman, was miscast==she was in a role way beneath her, so that is why CB was prominant, CB was IN her element...can you picture CB as Camille??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
-
Despite these attempts to flee from fame, she was nevertheless voted Best Silent Actress of the Century (her compatriot Ingrid Bergman winning the Best Sound Actress) in 1950, and was once designated as the most beautiful woman who ever lived by the Guinness Book of World Records. who is this person?
