  1. i agree, although, now, i think the TCM viewers are not being listened to...TCM is the only place where serious movie lovers and art lovers in general can go and see the CLASSICS...by classics i understand this to be movies that are works of art, done without trickery of any kind, just beautiful art direction, lighting, etc., and the stars, omg....it could go on...i not allowed to mention her, but the swedish one is the loveliest, and please add joan and bette, (the letter was on today in the before noon slot, this is only the beginning, soon we will have to look at sandra bullock the sex and the city gang, and they will be called classic hollywood. why was the WofOZ on twice, anyone who likes the film, owns it...and the kids today, do not care about these films, they make their own on the computer, and they are overwhelmed by 3d and stereo and computer graphis they do not understand the work and art and genius that went into these productions, it is a losing fight...TCM give us back our films at decent times!
  2. you really know how to insult a great movie queen
  3. somebody on this thread likes lombard
  4. i LOVE John Gilbert, cannot wait for his day in August!
  5. i was at a recent seminar of fashions from hollywood, and the person conducting the show was a learned man from hollywood, whom i shall not mention, (he was a personal friend of Joan Crawfords) and said when he met Lucy, that quote "she was the biggest ########## he had ever met! i was not surprised, because i have heard this before, i grew up with i love lucy, and loved her to this day, i like some of films (she was NO GARBO!), but i have heard and read that she was very pushy to say the least and kind of treated people unkindly, i never met the woman, but you can sort of believe all these stories, does anyone have any more thoughts on this? I love Roz Russell, period. Angela Lansbury is a fine actress too, catch her in Gaslight!
  6. i love kate winslet, she is a wonderful actress, but i think it unwise for anyone to tackle parts played by Crawford, Bette, Garbo or Hepburn, they are the greats, they put their stamp on their roles, it a dangerous task to try to put your own stamp on the masterpieces.

  8. i am a native new yorker, and everyone knew who GG was and people were always looking for citings of her around Manhattan, duh, even my daughter, who i never mentioned Garbo to, knew who she was when i was lucky enough to get TCM on my cable provider when i moved to another state, lots of people know who Garbo is because of her mystique and glamour, in Europe, for instance many festivals are always on, and now in Milan, there is very large display of her personal wardrobe, i recently view some of her person wardrobe in a fashion show of hollywood, ran by a person who personally knew joan crawford...Garbo is a fashion icon as well, books are constantly coming out about her, one is scheduled for release in Sept of this year, (it is come out first in Italy) you see many people know Garbo by her name and fashion influence, those who may not be aware of her films except for the really endearing ones.....you see there is more to Garbo than the films!
  9. why is TCM devoting almost all of the day today to Ann Shirley....i never heard of her, and i go way back.......there must be another Queen of the B movies here besides Lucy Ball...at least we all know and love Lucy, but who is Ann Shirley? We must cope with the overlooking of the great ones, but to devote so much of today's programming like this is really over the top!
  10. Greta Garbo was the absolute superstar in the Thirties of the Twentieth Century. The Swedish actress became famous through her roles as strong, determined women such as Anna Karenina, Queen Christina or the Polish Countess Maria Walewska. She succeeded in playing these characters in a subtle, demure way, manifesting deep emotions in close-ups simply through the expression of her eyes. The artistry of her acting was unique. As of 1928, she became known simply as ?the Garbo? and was a box office magnet.
  11. yes, i would too! will they be showing the silent JG made with JE?
  12. you know that is not nice to say that you are delighted that TCM is ignoring Greta Garbo, she made many great films and she must be special for someone who only made 24 American films, and she is still regarded in the top 5 of all time great actresses to this day, got 4 oscar nomination, the only actress in history to be nominated for 2 different films in one year, Camille is regarded to this day as the greatest screen performance ever filmed by an actress (even Bette Davis said in 1937 that it was wrong that GG did not get the oscar for that film (and BD was nominated too) but Louise Rainer who no one remembers today, took home oscar for the good earth! GG did not play the hollywood game, left with her head held high with dignity, never stole parts from other actresses and was never a cut throat in the hollywood sense of the word, read up on the great and beautiful actress, maybe you might learn something constructive!
  13. Garbo people will be saddened that day - her birthday and no tribute on her day...she would have been 105 years young!
  14. please explain how many times Garbo films are on.......i mean about 1 or 2 a month or like next month, not at all....she is not on that much.
  15. yes, this is great news, but how about more!
  16. i would ask Kate what she really thought about Hollywood and some of the best people she ever met, who they were and why she like or disliked them.
  17. i believe the answer was for actors only, so here are my 3 Spencer Tracey Bogart James Stewart if you insist on the gals Garbo Crawford Stanwyck
  18. there are not enough of these 2 greats on TCM either!
  19. yes, i am a relatively new fan i am just tired of the newer movies creeping up on TCM really, i luv Natalie Wood, but she is not a classic golden age person, star of the month, most of the films are ordinary and got 2 stars........please remember we are classic movie lovers, and deserve quality, there is not enough Crawford, Davis, Stanwyck, Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, etc....do you get the drift?
  20. TCM SHOULD SHOW THE 2 FILMS GG MADE IN EUROPE: THE SAGA OF GOESTA BERLING FOR STILLER THE JOYLESS STREET FOR PABST! THESE ARE REAL TREATS AS I RECALL, TCM PLAYED INGRID BERGMAN'S FILMS FROM SWEDEN BEFORE HOLLYWOOD WHY NOT GRETA'S INCIDENTALLY, MAYER SAW GOSTA BERGLING IN BERLIN AND FELL IN LOVE WITH HER, MET STILLER AND THE REST IS HISTORY!

  22. GARBO TURNED DOWN THE FILM, A WOMAN'S FACE...SHE DID NOT WANT TO PORTRAY SUCH A HARD CHARACTER, JOAN DID A GREAT JOB HOWEVER.
  23. I HAVE BEEN THIS CONTINUOUS PROBLEM FOR SEVERAL MONTHS - SO I WILL SUGGEST SOME FILMS HERE: SUSAN LENOX THE BIG PARADE AS YOU DESIRE ME CONQUEST ANY CARY GRANT FILMS
  24. THIS MASTERPIECE OF GARBO'S WAS ON AT 8am ON sUNDAY.......THIS IS A GREAT PIECE OF ACTING (SHE GOT THE NEW YORK DRAMA CRITIC'S AWARD FOR THIS MOVIE) HER SENSITIVITY PORTRAYING A MOTHER TORN BETWEEN A GREAT LOVE AND THE LOVE AND DEVOTION TO HER CHILD, SHE WAS MAGANIFICENT!
  25. some Garbo silents: The Single Standard, Flesh and the Devil, Love, Wild Orchids, and the last silent made at MGM - The Kiss some not so familiar Garbo talkies: Susan Lenox (with Gable), Romance, (oscar nomination) Inspiration, Conquest (with Boyer) and my all time pick: As You Desire Me! when you see these flicks, you will see why she was and still is untouchable!
