hello, she was named that in 1955..............................................ok and it has been reported on her fan club website and various books, and is known as the face of the century!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

i watched this "remake" of grand hotel for the first time yesterday, it was totally ridiculous and insulting to the original in all shapes and forms - thank goodness they did not require ginger rogers to be a Garbo and do a dramatic love scene in any way shape or form, and what in heaven's name is Cugat and his orchestra doing in the film?????????????/ lana turner doing joan's part is an insult not only to MGM and Miss Crawford, but an insult to movie lovers..............i really think the stars of the real Grand Hotel must have been laughing or crying when they viewed this rubbish...thank goodness Grand Hotel is being shown this Friday for GG's birthday, catch that one!!!!!!
-
she would have to be in the guiness book of records and be named in everything else that MS> GARBO was involved in.................................lamarr also COULD NOT EVEN APPROACH TO ACT....... ALSO, CATCH SOME OF GARBO's silent films, and get some education! Also, GG had a perfect face, but somehow as she aged, her face grew more prettier. Lamarr aged terribly and was last photograph in court being arrained for shoplifting!

Mata Hari with Garbo had scenes cut from it after it was re-released again - the scenes were deleted because the Hays Code decided when the film was re-released again, it became suddenly immoral! the scenes that were known to be cut (which were are in the original release in 1932) are as follows: - in the beginning of the film the dance Mata does is much longer, more suggestive - the scene in Mata's bedroom where you see Rosonoff leaving, well the original scene has Mata coming out of the curtains dressed in a completely see through negligee and then a very heavy love scene enfoldes - another scene cut was when Rosonoff puts out the lights in his room at Mata's command, then after that they show a wonderful close up of Mata and Rosonoff picks up in his arms and carries her to his bedroom and a love scene unfolds. This picture does exist in its enitrety and has been shown in Belgium, I have heard. TCM owes it to us to see the original uncut uncensored version, they owe it to Garbo's memory and to her fans!

you neglect to say that in 1931 MGM also paired him with Garbo in Susan Lenox and SHE stole the show, however, Gable is the only leading man she ever played against who matched her for her dominace of the film
-
i agree, he was the finest actor (male) of his time his voice is just to dream and die for!
-
how many out there know that Garbo was named the most beautiful woman who ever lived in the Guiness Book of Records and also is widely acclaimed at the Face of the Century (last) and also the most photogenic actress ever before the cameras? who could ever top all of that?

how did deitrich make a fool of garbo, what did you mean by this Garbo is remembered by many as a rather innocent and vulnerable woman, which deitrich, i think was anything but -
MGM was the city of dreams and dreamers of beauty and charm and grace....i wish i could have seen it then.

To the Motion Picture Production Code on its 75th Birthday
johnbabe replied to CelluloidKid's topic in Pre-Code Films
thanks to the motion picture code and hays, we have mangled and ruined pics such as MataHari (when it was reissued in 1936), and Two Faced Woman, plus many others, what hypocrits these code people were! -
maybe TCM should try to get the copy, after all, they do own the MGM catalog, i am sure TCM and Mr. Turner could do something and Warner home video too, GG did not make many films, so the ones we have should be preserved in their original format, also two faced woman is another victim of the hayes code.........there are petitions to Warner and TCM but i do not think they are taking these petitions seriously, maybe if all the viewers who would like to see this film as intended by MGM when it was originally released, banned together we might get some results, thanks.
-
anyone have any news when TCM will step up to the plate and give us this gem of Garbo in its precode uncensored format, instead of the chopped up "censored" version in her box set, the original sits in Belgium! an American film and it is in Europe, in its entirety, please!

Summer Under the Stars Movies Shown and Stars Chosen
johnbabe replied to CLASSICMOVIEDLUVRNTN's topic in General Discussions
some of these stars, really, are second rate B performers, give us back some of the real stars, ala Garbo, Stanwych, Crawford, Davis, Cooper, Robinson, Edward G., Bogart, and some of the earlier people too......this year was mostly a DUD SUTS! -
thank you very much, armand....we have to keep greta alive she was really unique!
-
she was truly beautiful and most people do not know the various looks of Garbo, thank you so much for sharing
-
my dear armand, garbo is in the guiness book of records as being the most beautiful woman who ever lived, she is the top rated in the book, four fabulous faces, and all photographers agreed in hollywood and out, that she had no bad angles, give me a break, where do you get your info?
-
if you love silents, catch her silents, they are all a beautiful thing to watch, i love silent romances because they really capture the mood of the story, you have to concentrate because of no dialogue, check out The Flesh and the Devil, The Temptress, Mysterious Lady,The Single Standard, all are just wonderful
-
it was on last night, and everyone knows and loves the film, but how many of you knew, and Robert Osborne told it last night, that both Greta and Ina Claire were involved with John Gilbert, Gilbert married Claire after Greta turned him down for the 5th time or so, to marry him, Greta never got over it, even though she did not wish to marry, she considered Gilbert to be her love. they were two professionals to carry the movie out, and Gilbert had been dead for 3 years already. just a bit of Hollywood knowledge on the side.
-
it is truly a wonderful delightful film and very classy too.

Any news on rumored upcoming Harlow box set from Warner Bros??
johnbabe replied to iowahawkeye's topic in Pre-Code Films
how many films did Harlow actually make? -
Garbo, Garbo, Garbo, Stanwyck, Harlow, to name a few.
-
i totally agree, and how about The Painted Veil, and Conquest and believe it or not, Two Faced Woman is a very funny flick, and there is an uncensored version of that one too.

the term Classic to me means it has been around for a long time, it is a standard by which others judge the quality of films or whatever subject it may be. so, TCM should stick to it..........i was not privileged to have TCM on my Cable TV for 17 years, on Long Island in NY we did not have it.............so, we missed out all these years on watching the films they throw on the crazy hour shift, i.e. Camille on at 6 AM on a Sunday morning, or a great silent film on at 2 AM in the morning.................please stop playing 1960 films and up, i can see them any time, PLEASE live up to the Golden Age of Movies that you should represent. please put Cary, Greta, Bette, Joan, Gary, Edward G and Bogart on at respectable times so that we can see them, on the big TV....also, please play more of their lesser known films, it would be a real treat to those who missed your earlier years. Also, put some of them on the covers of your What's Playing, they are pretty good cover!
