  1. The Ma and Pa Kettle Series is owned by Universal. Since Universal is owned by NBC now, and NBC has at least part ownership of AMC, I really look for Universal owned films to start declining on TCM.

There are two different Charlie Chan groups. The films made by 20th Century Fox, which is almost a sure thing they will not lease them. Then there's the Monogram group. Who holds their rights, I don't know.

  2. Great Expectations is a UK title whose American distribution was picked up by Universal.

Brief Encounter is also a UK title with Paramount, it appears, as the U.S. rights distributor.

Both are available from Criterion DVD for the ridiculous price of $39.95 for no feature discs.

TCM plays a foreign movie on Friday nights, usually about 2 A.M. eastern (officially, its Saturday morning)and occasionally Silent Sunday is a foreign title.

The two movies are both available used on VHS.

  3. Here's a break down of movies that are lost, and what studio they came from. Weather this is a complete and true accounting I don't know.

The site I complied these numbers from does not go beyond 1935, but I would imagine the numbers stay low.

I always thought that the 50% included the silents. Maybe it doesn't

  4. I'm not an expert, but I don't think they're available to purchase. The only Artie Shaw musical short that comes up as available is Class in Swing (1939) part of a Hollywood Rhythm The Paramount Musical Shorts vol.2 on DVD.

  5. They show post 1950 Warner's like Giant by getting permission, and probably paying a leasing fee, to the rights holder, which is Warner Bros.

As to why they don't air it, maybe they can't get permission. As to not finding a copy to air, I would doubt that as the video was released on Warner Home Video, so I would assume that Warner's still has at least a copy. Quality has never been a true issue. A couple of films that are shown occasionally have blemishes on them.
