Has anyone thought about contacting Jon Lovitz, the Master Thespian, about this topic?

I am not sure if an actor could be considered to be very talented without having some charisma. How expressive must one be to show that they have "charisma"? I would say it all depends on how you define the word charisma. Some people would say Gary Cooper (a great actor for sure) is always rather stoic in his roles, but for some of us that is one of his endearing qualities. So does Cooper have charisma? On the other hand I think there are some actors who may show a lot of "charisma", but to me I think they are just overacting, and I don't consider them to be all that talented.

Getting ready for Carole Lombard day (August 28th, Sunday). Hurricane Irene is supposed to be rolling through my area (Pa) on Sunday. Is it just coincidence? At 8 PM est, *My Man Godfrey* is on , maybe Carole's best film (definitely my favorite of hers) and Carole plays the zany Irene Bullock. Hope Irene the storm is as easy to take as Irene the character.

When the actor's personal life news is the only "news" out there, that says a lot about their acting accomplishments.

Cyd Charisse was in *Tension* with Richard Basehart

I agree with Fred, sometimes we learn a little too much about our celebrities. Joan Crawford was a very talented actress, but she had her personal issues and being a high profile celebrity often distorts a persons behavior. She may have had the financial ability to adopt children but the demands of her career (and the priorities she put on her responsiblities) made her a lousy parent.

Perhaps Robert Osborne should be filmed doing the commentaries but Ben could "dub" the vocals. Or Ben could be recorded and Robert could "lipsync". Seriously, I like both guys and can tolerate any minor faults. With 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week there is enough room for both to have their moments, and maybe another host or two to fill in some of the other time slots.

Peter Whitney was in *Action in the North Atlantic* with Raymond Massey (I have to confess, I had to look up Peter Whitney, couldn't imagine who he was? )

I have watched this movie a dozen times (Its my favorite Kim Novak movie). When she loses her powers she starts to cry and realizes what it is to be in love.

Let's not split hairs here, these are all great films. The preferences (at least for me) are only by small margin. I always like William Powell's witty remarks and Carole is the all time ditzy female in *My Man Godfrey*. Am I off base in suggesting that Cary Grant was imitating William Powell a little when Grant started establishing his screen persona? William Powell first popularized that witty, suave type of character in the movies. Cary took that and kind of exaggerated it and being a younger and more handsome man he could take it to other levels.

Now that we have a closer monitoring of these forums, we have to keep this Joel McCrea thread going. Lets let them know what we demand; *Joel McCrea* for a month, not just a day!!
-
If there is only one Joel McCrea film scheduled over the next few months that might be a good omen. (starting a rumor) TCM is holding back the Joel McCrea stuff and building up a stockpile. Then it will be a Joel McCrea blitz of films on Joel McCrea month, sometime early 2012. --- Joel McCrea, Joel McCrea, better a month instead of a day!!!

I think you people are getting a little carried away with this "giving away the ending" thought. Many well known classic films have been so popularized that its common knowledge about the plot or the ending. Don't we all know the basics about *Psycho* , *Casablanca*, etc. even if you've never seen the films. Its a little different for the later generations after the film has become a classic. The film never quite has the impact that it did when it first came out.

At the beginning of the film Stewart wants the undertaker to put the Duke's gun and belt on his body. Andy Devine says "he hasn't worn them in years" . That and the fact that few present day people in Shinbone seem to remember Tom Doniphon suggests that after the Valance shooting, Tom Doniphon went into a seculsion, probably just stayed at his little ranch and lived like a hermit. Only Pompey and a few others saw him.

Fred, about *Cheyenne Autumn*. As Richard Widmark would say -- John Ford was in the "Mr Magoo" stage of his life.

Burt Lancaster Day
in General Discussions
Posted
Burt Lancaster is one of my favorites, so many great films to feature, how to decide what to show on his day? I guess it all comes down to what's available at the moment. I am sure many viewers will find something on the schedule that they have never seen, or one they haven't seen in a long time. Several of my favorite Burt films aren't on the days schedule, but TCM has shown them before and will certainly show them again sometime. One film that I believe they haven't shown in quite a while is *Criss Cross* which is one of the best film noirs.
