  1. I heard real estate is cheaper in the Aleutians, therefore you don't need a job and have more movie viewing time.
  2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K-xyLObRLs , The Guess Who from 1970, "969 - The Oldest Man" Edited by: mrroberts on Aug 27, 2013 6:42 PM
  3. A thousand thanks for that Chain Gang link to Mr Dobbs. Don't mean to hijack this Glenda Farrell thread but that clip was my introduction to Noel Francis and I have been hooked ever since. I've seen plenty of Noel Francis scenes since this, and she can play a nice "girl next door" too. But most of her roles were precode and she played many roles like "Linda".
  4. The other solution is to move way out west (like the far end of the Aleutian Islands) where the good movies are on in prime time.
  5. I envision a second TCM channel dedicated to June Allyson films and cohosted by Drew Barrymore and Finance.
  6. FredCDobbs and I have to start a campaign for a Noel Francis day (even better a whole month) on TCM!
  7. My favorite 3 Dog Night song is "Eli's Coming" , I like those keyboard songs.
  8. Talk about straying from the original topic. -- I hope Dick Van Dyke had full insurance coverage on the car (what if Laura forgot to mail in the check) "OH, ROB"
  9. *I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang* is truly a classic film. But keep an eye out for "Linda" , played by Noel Francis
  10. If there is a Heaven, and assuming that most people will go there (only the REAL baddies go to the other place) what will all of the whiners and complainers do in Heaven? They will be miserable. Sounds like a good Twlight Zone or Night Gallery episode.
  11. Robert Ryan was another one of those "nice guys in real life" who was so good at playing bad guys, like Richard Widmark, Dan Duryea, Jack Palance, Ernie Borgnine, etc, etc. One of my favorite Ryan bad guys is the sadistic "master of arms" he played in *Billy Budd* . He should get a month long tribute sometime soon (right after Mr Widmark.)
  12. Arturo, correction, Jean Peters was in "The Last Leaf" segment with Anne Baxter. The *O HENRY's FULL HOUSE* had 5 short separate stories, Jeanne Crain was in the last segment only. Edited by: mrroberts on Aug 26, 2013 1:01 AM Edited by: mrroberts on Aug 26, 2013 1:01 AM
  13. I never thought to try that (search only from the home page). I almost always go right to the message board so even though the search function at the top looks the same it doesn't link to the search subject. Thanks for the tip, can't wait until the reconstruction project gets finished, of course I don't know why anything had to change from before, everything seemed to work just fine, oh well?
  14. CarenS, I have been trying to do a Robert Ryan search on the TCM site for you but it still won't work. So I did an end around, see if you can follow this: Click on "schedule" at the top, then click on for the monthly schedule (the entire month of August) . Go down to the 21st (William Holden film day) and click on "The Wild Bunch" which costarred Robert Ryan. THEN you click on "Robert Ryan" which will bring you to his page. It lists his movies on TCM's schedule through October. Unfortunate that we can't search and go right to that page, but one has to make do , good luck.
  15. With 31 days in the month and 31 "stars" featured, what does one consider a good batting average for "stars I like or approve of"? If TCM scores at least 50% for a viewer I would think that is a decent average. And as was pointed out in an earlier thread at least a dozen "stars" are getting a first time honoring this year, I think that is welcome.
  16. Jeanne Crain was in a nice segment ( "Gift of the Magi", with Farley Granger) in *O Henry's Full House* . And *Vicki* features Jeanne with Jean Peters (really like the casting there) . And let's not forget one of Jeanne's later movies, the cult classic *Hot Rod's To Hell* costarring Dana Andrews. Maybe these can be on a future schedule.
  17. Lets just say a few comments got way out of hand, some people aren't very good about getting their points across in a proper manner.
  18. CarenS, I believe that the TCM CFU site is working ok but it often is slow, like posting photos, etc. And see there are people out there to lend a hand, many are more knowledgeable than me. I see you are also a big fan of Richard Widmark. Same here and watch for Misswonderly, she has quite the crush on him. Edited by: mrroberts on Aug 24, 2013 3:39 PM
  19. Dargo2, I get what you're saying, that a 2013 Gone With The Wind might be made more sanitized concerning some issues but I believe we do see some films from time to time that do "tell it like it is" or as Jack Webb would say, "just the facts maam". Of course a new film may go the other way like showing how some masters had relations with their slaves too. I do believe that some actresses would welcome the challenge of portraying that character as long as they could demonstrate the strengths of that character much like Hattie did in 1939. And my point is that Hattie McDaniel did a great job of that, at least as far as she could go in 1939.
  20. CarenS, right now the TCM site is being "remodeled" and things are in a state of disarray. Normally you could go to the search on the TCM page and type in "Robert Ryan", get a brief bio, film listing, and mention of any Ryan films on the schedule for the next few months. But right now that doesn't seem to be working at least not for me. Hopefully that will be corrected soon. Robert Ryan was an excellent actor, played in a lot of very good films and I know there are a lot of posters here who are fans. Maybe they can help you out as well.
  21. Since you are a first time poster let me say welcome to you and suggest you use the TCM site to do a search for these films or just search "Robert Ryan". You may find some of these films are on the schedule in the near future. You can also put film titles in the "suggest a movie" feature on the TCM site. I do believe that they monitor the requests and make reasonable efforts to locate and air the films; but it may take some time.
  22. its unfortunate that the moderator couldn't have selectively edited the thread. Yes, I believe a moderator should have that power to edit even if that effects any or all of us at one time or another. And any offenders should be warned or even banished if their conduct warrants it. There were some legitimate points made in that thread. When watching any of these old films there are things I find very distasteful but I realize that at that time those things were considered the norm. I am glad that we feel that way because it shows that we have changed for the better (at least some of us have changed). I also don't believe the old films should be edited or altered in any way because they are history and we should be able to watch and learn. I thought I had a good question on the Hattie thread just before it was removed so I'll ask it again. If "Gone With The Wind" had never been filmed and it was to be done today would it be filmed much different? Would Hattie's character be much different and would any current actress have been able to play it better than she did (in 1939)?
  23. I thought there was a slight chance he was referring to *Ensign Pulver* also known as "Desire Under the Palm Tree"
  24. Do a wiki search, there's quite a fascinating history about the island(s).
  25. This sounds like the 1958 film, *God's Little Acre* , but Burl Ives was not in this. the star was Robert Ryan and it has been shown on TCM. Edited by: mrroberts on Aug 24, 2013 12:15 AM
