Vickix33, its hard to go wrong watching any film with Jack Lemmon in it. As with any actor some films are just ok and others are real gems. Jack always gives a good performance. Thought of mostly for comedy Jack can give a very serious intense performance too. *Days Of Wine And Roses* proves that , it is very intense. And Jack got an early Oscar for his work in my all time favorite film, *Mister Roberts* . Just keep checking the schedule or better yet do a TCM search for Jack Lemmon, it will tell you what films of his are coming up in the next few months.

BURT LANCASTER!! One of my favorite favorites. As mentioned previously, a number of great Burt films aren't on the schedule but hopefully they can be obtained at a later date. *I Walk Alone* and *CrissCross* are 2 terrific noirs. One of my all time favorite films is *The Train* , a film that really showcases Burt the action hero, he does ALL of his own stunts and even doubled for a few other actors, and Burt was nearing 50 years of age. Get the DVD of The Train, John Frankenheimer does the full audio commentary and tells a lot of details. And I don't care how often TCM airs *Gunfight At The O K Corral* , that is one hell of an entertaining film that I can watch over and over...

If I heard Ben correctly the other night about half of the stars honored this year are first time honorees. I think that's great.

I love The Honeymooners (no tv show has ever been better) but it does not belong on TCM in any form. Come on, if TCM starts pursuing a "greater viewing audience" then we can forget about 90% of the current format. The old Carson interviews being shown are to show the people (classic film stars) being interviewed.

I always enjoy William Holden's performances, he wasn't afraid to play some offbeat characters. I am sure I've seen *Sabrina* on tv not too long ago but can't swear that it was on TCM. But like many of his films its a Paramount and that seems to cause problems with accessability for TCM. Also it seems surprising that its not available on DVD. I did recently get a copy of *Bridges At Toko Ri* , another Paramount picture and one of my favorite films.

This reminds me of an episode of WKRP In Cincinnati concerning "the dungarees VS the suits". I guess Ben has gone over to the enemy

Laughton is excellent in this comedy. I know he sometimes is guilty of overacting (remember the thread awhile ago on "Ham" actors) but he does this role just right. -
Blossom Rock (Grandmama from the Addams Family)

If Doris Day married Dennis Day she would be .......

I would imagine that films sent out for foreign distribution always had some editing done to satisfy that particular market. Maybe the German version of *All Quiet On The Western Front* was altered in some fashion. Is it safe to assume that all of these American films were "dubbed" or did they just use subtitles? --- I find it hard to believe that the Nazi's were appalled by anyone elses "atrocities", if anything they were inspired.

I understand that Mr Dobbs still gets residuals from his film being shown on TCM (a small gold nugget)

I want to take a poll. You're going on a cruise ship. Who do you want as the ship's Captain ? Bogart (as in The Caine Mutiny), Cagney (as in Mister Roberts), or Eddie G. (as in The Sea Wolf) ? This isn't going to be like The Love Boat !!
-
That guy Cagney was a miserable S O B for a Captain though. I hope that Ensign Pulver put those marbles in his overhead fan. And threw a firecracker under his bunk too.

The person who started the thread , Justice1111, is also banished. It was his inane first statement that is gone, rightfully so. Most of the following comments were A OK for discussion.

It appears that the administrator removed the initial statement that started the thread. That cancelled out the whole thing. Edited by: mrroberts on Jul 29, 2013 10:57 AM

A great automat scene is in the movie *There Goes My Heart* with Virginia Bruce and Patsy Kelly . The whole movie (also starring Fredric March) is a great screw ball comedy.

What a great thread here. I have been checking it periodically and been wanting to comment for some time . Certainly all 3 actors had great careers with so many great performances to their credits. Other than having the "gangster" characters as a common thread each was his own man and brought certain strengths to their screen work. But trying to compare them straight up is like the apples, oranges, pears debate. Fortunately each often got cast in the best possible ways; Bogart in *Casablanca* , Cagney in *White Heat* , Robinson in *Double Indemnity* , etc. They were ideal in those roles and the other two would not have been nearly as effective. Ironically my 3 favorite films for each actor all were from 1941 : Robinson in *The Sea Wolf* , Cagney in *The Strawberry Blonde* , and Bogart in *High Sierra* .

This was Sidney Poitier's first film. Richard Widmark met with him and discussed what the movie would be about before they started it. Widmark obviously believed very strongly in the "message" of the movie and was willing to play the part of the bigot, even if it was a risky career move for him. The 2 men became life long best friends and worked together in several more films in the future. I greatly admire both men for their film work and their personal character. Might be a good time to watch a film like "Ice Station Zebra" or "Scott of the Antartic"

I don't know if hypnotize is the right word to describe it but I will always remember seeing Hitchcock's *Vertigo* on the big screen in the early 80's (when the "missing Hitchcock 5" were brought back for public viewing). From the start, that film really had me totally absorbed, like in a trance. Watching a film like that on a regular TV viewing (even uncut, commercial free like on TCM) doesn't come close to the big screen experience.

My sincere condolences to the family and many friends of Kyle, I always appreciated his many postings here. They were always insightful and of a positive nature. For those of us here who never met him or spoke with him there is still a sense of great loss. Let us carry on with his spirit in mind.

MOVIES ! a new channel for classic films

Markfp2 makes a good point about the editing issue. If the station gets an "edited" copy to air, we can't blame them for the result. They only promise to air what they receive. I really believe that TCM (and hopefully the other stations) make a sincere effort to get the best , most complete, movie copy available and they don't deserve to get criticized for the end product. -
Sewhite2000, I really don't believe that any editing that is being done to these interviews is omitting anything of substance. These Carson interviews were all probably the first guest spots, and after a few minutes of talk they had a commercial break, then returned to finish the spot. Sometimes the guest stayed on, moving down the couch to make room for the next guest; sometimes the first guest would leave, after a final acknowledgement from Johnny and audience applause. As for Ed McMahon; he would announce to start the show, play straight man in the Carson monologue, then he and Johnny would have their little exchange (maybe a Carnac routine) at the desk. After the first guest came on Ed would often just be there without any further participation in the show. Johnny would even announce the guests as they came out. I often wondered what Ed's job was at that point. In the show's early days he would do some on air commercial pitches. Sometimes a guest (usually a comic like Don Rickles ) would pull Ed into the conversations. So I am sure that Ed isn't being purposely cut out of these scenes, he just isn't involved.

As goofy as Conan may seem to some people, I believe the guy is quite intelligent and has a real appreciation for the "classics".

MOVIES ! a new channel for classic films

Thank you for that link , Fred. I had trouble searching on the internet for the site. I am on a local community cable service so my channels don't always match up with a major service like Comcast. Cuurrently I am on a premium service level so I get the HBO/Cinemax channels as well as many other channels that aren't part of a basic service. On a basic package I wouldn't get many stations (like TCM, FMC, MeTV, etc). And because my DVD/VCR recorder doesn't have a digital tuner I can't record many of these channels (thankfully I CAN record TCM).
