  1. CarenS, I have been trying to do a Robert Ryan search on the TCM site for you but it still won't work. So I did an end around, see if you can follow this: Click on "schedule" at the top, then click on for the monthly schedule (the entire month of August) . Go down to the 21st (William Holden film day) and click on "The Wild Bunch" which costarred Robert Ryan. THEN you click on "Robert Ryan" which will bring you to his page. It lists his movies on TCM's schedule through October. Unfortunate that we can't search and go right to that page, but one has to make do , good luck.

  2. With 31 days in the month and 31 "stars" featured, what does one consider a good batting average for "stars I like or approve of"? If TCM scores at least 50% for a viewer I would think that is a decent average. And as was pointed out in an earlier thread at least a dozen "stars" are getting a first time honoring this year, I think that is welcome.

  3. Jeanne Crain was in a nice segment ( "Gift of the Magi", with Farley Granger) in *O Henry's Full House* . And *Vicki* features Jeanne with Jean Peters (really like the casting there) . And let's not forget one of Jeanne's later movies, the cult classic *Hot Rod's To Hell* costarring Dana Andrews. Maybe these can be on a future schedule.

  4. CarenS, I believe that the TCM CFU site is working ok but it often is slow, like posting photos, etc. And see there are people out there to lend a hand, many are more knowledgeable than me. I see you are also a big fan of Richard Widmark. Same here and watch for Misswonderly, she has quite the crush on him.

  5. Dargo2, I get what you're saying, that a 2013 Gone With The Wind might be made more sanitized concerning some issues but I believe we do see some films from time to time that do "tell it like it is" or as Jack Webb would say, "just the facts maam". Of course a new film may go the other way like showing how some masters had relations with their slaves too. I do believe that some actresses would welcome the challenge of portraying that character as long as they could demonstrate the strengths of that character much like Hattie did in 1939. And my point is that Hattie McDaniel did a great job of that, at least as far as she could go in 1939.

  6. CarenS, right now the TCM site is being "remodeled" and things are in a state of disarray. Normally you could go to the search on the TCM page and type in "Robert Ryan", get a brief bio, film listing, and mention of any Ryan films on the schedule for the next few months. But right now that doesn't seem to be working at least not for me. Hopefully that will be corrected soon. Robert Ryan was an excellent actor, played in a lot of very good films and I know there are a lot of posters here who are fans. Maybe they can help you out as well.

  7. Since you are a first time poster let me say welcome to you and suggest you use the TCM site to do a search for these films or just search "Robert Ryan". You may find some of these films are on the schedule in the near future. You can also put film titles in the "suggest a movie" feature on the TCM site. I do believe that they monitor the requests and make reasonable efforts to locate and air the films; but it may take some time.

  8. its unfortunate that the moderator couldn't have selectively edited the thread. Yes, I believe a moderator should have that power to edit even if that effects any or all of us at one time or another. And any offenders should be warned or even banished if their conduct warrants it. There were some legitimate points made in that thread. When watching any of these old films there are things I find very distasteful but I realize that at that time those things were considered the norm. I am glad that we feel that way because it shows that we have changed for the better (at least some of us have changed). I also don't believe the old films should be edited or altered in any way because they are history and we should be able to watch and learn. I thought I had a good question on the Hattie thread just before it was removed so I'll ask it again. If "Gone With The Wind" had never been filmed and it was to be done today would it be filmed much different? Would Hattie's character be much different and would any current actress have been able to play it better than she did (in 1939)?

  9. Its unfortunate that this thread has gone so far astray. Since much has been said about Hattie McDaniel's role in *Gone With The Wind* I have an interesting thought to bring up. IF the film "Gone With The Wind" hadn't been made back in 1939 and all of these years later the story was finally going to be told in a film, would the 2013 version be much different than the 1939 film (lets forget that today visually graphic sex and violence would be part of any film)? Would Hattie McDaniel's character be played any differently? Would any talented black actress be able to play the character any better than McDaniel's 1939 effort? That's how I would evaluate her performance of 1939 and would give it a big thumbs up.

  10. FlyBack, from what I have read Holden didn't want the ending of Bridges At Toko Ri altered. In real life Holden had a brother who was a pilot and he died in WW2. So Holden wanted the reality of war to be shown, sometimes the good guys don't make it back. The realities of war are very central to Holden's character and the whole storyline. That's what I like about the film and Holden plays his character very well.

  11. You have to judge people and events in the context of the times . Hattie McDaniel was obviously very limited in the kind of acting roles she could do but she did them very well and gave them a sort of dignity. People like her did what they could in their time and helped pave the way for future actors of color to expand on the kind of roles they could play in films. One has to appreciate her talents and can only speculate on what she could have done with more opportunities.

  12. I think that anytime there is a tribute day to a star its good to dig up some of the star's "lesser known" or "hardly ever seen" films. The big time movies like Sunset Blvd, Stalag 17, Picnic, River Kwai, etc get shown on a regular basis so use the opportunity to air the other films that show the full extent of the actor's career. (I have stated on several threads here that *Bridges At Toko Ri* is my favorite Bill Holden film).

  13. Most of those old Hollywood celebs had some very nice pools (cement ponds) in their back yards. I assume some of them put the pools to good use. Guys like Fred MacMurray and Jack Carson looked like they spent a lot of time working out and the leading ladies had to keep their figures to keep the paychecks rolling in.

  14. People have to remember that the "Carson on TCM" pieces are not meant so much to be about Carson, but the people being interviewed. That's why I hope in the future TCM may be able to access more movie star interviews from whatever sources that they can. If someone starts showing entire Carson Tonight show episodes on another station I will definitely tune them in. But TCM is first and foremost about movies.
