I like all of the previous nominees, but Eddie G is the clear winner here IMO.

I am a little surprised that someone (guess who?) didn't suggest Barbara Stanwyck. "Plainest" doesn't suggest to me unattractive, and how are we defining "star"? Hollywood make up artists and the wardrobe department can go a long way in making someone beautiful or handsome. So lack of make up and costume can make most anyone look "plain", just like the rest of us, right? Speaking of Olivia De, how about her appearance in *The Snake Pit* ? Or sister Joan, who made being plain a big part of her career. Along with Barbara S. I would agree with nominating Bette Davis for this category. As for the male counterpart, how about Edward G?

Earlier I suggested Burt Lancaster and his performance in *Elmer Gantry* . Maybe the title for this thread is a little too restrictive. I wouldn't rate Burt's one performance in this one movie above all of his others (obviously I believe he gave many great performances in his career.) But his Elmer Gantry role is right at the top of his game, and I can't imagine any other actor matching Burt's work in this role. Its a case of a perfect match of actor and character here. Burt's Oscar win was a slam dunk that year. All due respect to the other nominees for best actor 1960, but Burt was the clear winner. And if he could only get one Oscar in his life, it would have to be for this role.

Another goodie; Andy Devine (Link Appleyard, a Marshal no less) in *The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance* . He makes Barney Fife look like Matt Dillon.

If Mayo had been cast in *High Sierra* her and Bogie could have had a shoot out on Mount Whitney (think Jimmy Stewart and the end of *Winchester 73* )

How many people know that "Pard" was played by Bogart's own dog, named Zero? Funny, Bogie's pooch got in the film, but not his wife Mayo Methot.

We can all be greatful that the guy who comes on at the beginning of each film isn't saying, "Hello, I'm Chevy Chase... "

Putting aside the forever controversial issue of John Wayne's movie persona vs his real life experiences, I would only hope that any film depiction of a "war hero" doesn't stray far from the real nature of what war is all about, and the sacrifices that any participant must make. War is never glorious, it's ugly and has serious consequences. Unfortunately, at times it may be necessary (after reasonable attempt to avoid it) and we should always be grateful to and supportive of those who do serve. Even if an actor/actress has never personally experienced the military or actual combat, just keep it real when playing the role. I believe that most of John Wayne's characters did that. No female actress should be playing a "Supergirl" any more then a guy should be playing a "Superman".

I can highly recommend the dvd of *High Sierra* . First, its a great film to watch multiple times or pass around to friends. And there is a very nice bonus feature on the making of the film included.

Or Sam Levene, who plays Lt Abrams in two of the William Powell / Myrna Loy Thin Man films. Although Lt Abrams is always more than happy to get some help from Nick Charles.

I nominate Dennis Hoey, who played Inspector Lestrade in the Basil Rathbone / Sherlock Holmes films.

Bogie was driving a 1938 Plymouth coupe in *High Sierra* (although in a few early scenes in the film they used a 37 Plymouth, which looks very similar). And Bogie uses a similar Plymouth when playing Marlowe in *The Big Sleep* . *High Sierra* is my favorite Bogart film and that final chase scene was quite impressive filming for its day. I wonder if the museum car is the actual car from the movie, or a reasonable representation? I do want to get to Lone Pine someday, lots of movie history around there.

That's a neat thought, Carole having a few kids, who would also have had kids, today we could have a whole bunch of 3rd generation "Carole"s running around. And a granddaughter the mirror image of grandma

All I know is when I watch North By Northwest for the hundredth time I want to see all 4 heads on Mount Rushmore .

Glad I could be of some help. There are a lot of useful features on the TCM site, just explore around and you'll see. Many people on the boards will help a "newbie" like yourself. The most active areas are at the top of the main page here, "Hot Topics" and "General Discussion" are the places to go first. Or go to the "Technical Issues" section to communicate with the TCM board moderators if you are having problems with some functions. For whatever reason, some people do have problems getting things to work from time to time. I'm no technician so I can't help you there, but they will work out your problems.

Looks like March 3rd, Saturday, at 8 pm (essentials time). *Some Like It Hot* has gotten a lot of TCM air time recently, some posters here would say too much. No knock on the film, just that some people get obsessed with counting how often certain movies get repeated over and over. In the future go to the top right of this screen (the white blank) and enter a movie title or actor name and do a search. You can access a bio page and when the movie or actor may be on the schedule in the next month or two. Welcome to the boards, honeybeetoo, feel free to participate here.

Lizabeth Scott was rather "bad" in *Too Late For Tears* . Another good "bad" girl, Theresa Russell in *Black Widow* But I would agree with several previous posts, Jane Greer (Out Of The Past) is the ultimate "bad" girl . I have made comments before about how I really liked *It Started With Eve* , although Mr Laughton is the main reason for my liking that film. Deanna Durbin and Robert Cummings were also quite good in that film. I haven't seen it in a very long time, wish TCM could get it on sometime.

"Beriberi" was a common ailment amongst the crew in *Mister Roberts* , especially for those who were on call for "cargo duty". "Doc" William Powell prescribed an asprin and to report for duty.

I wonder if Robert Osborne will acknowledge the efforts of all of us to get this SOTM for Joel McCrea. A mention is not necessary, but it would be neat, eh?
