  1. After an initial flurry of press (saying Spring 2009 was the release date) I don't know that anything else has been said.

My business partner is something of (believe it or not) a celebrity-endorsed perfume expert, and he says that no one in the industry press has mentioned it since the first announcement.

  2. Where I live (New York City) I don't think we have the vending machines, but my family in Georgia uses them. When I visit they always have some ghastly Kate Hudson movie on hand from the Wal-Mart Redbox.

Redbox obviously targets a specific type of customer, and does it well. The logistics of their service --- the small number of discs available at a specific site --- means that anyone who likes classic movies enough to be posting on the TCM boards is unlikely to have much interest in their service.

Netflix, on the other hand, offers a huge variety of choices for us. No contest. (And I don't even subscribe to Netflix).

  3. You might be thinking of the Screensongs, done by Max Fleischer ... the most popular today being the ten or so done with the wonderful Betty Boop.

    Here's a Screensong example:

They're mostly public domain now, and you can find many online (YouTube or otherwise) and on the occasional cheap DVD.

If any of you only know Betty Boop from her continued licensed products, check the actual cartoons and shorts out. Wonderfully weird and subversive, even by today's standards.

  4. My apologies --- I was so wrapped up in the Challenge that I never deleted old PMs, and the box was full (it tops out at only 200!).

Especially sorry for you contestants who are sending me your address for your Fox's U-Bet prize! It will take the boards a few hours/possibly overnight to update. Thanks for your patience ... as we have all seen firsthand, I'm not the best at technology, but should be okay soon!

  5. My favorite Carol Burnett movie parody without question: *Mildred Fierce* , which I haven't seen since it aired initially (1977 or so?) and which I love to this minute.

I stumbled over an infomercial the other day for a DVD subscription service for old episodes, and just the clips included --- especially a brilliant one for another Joan Crawford parody, knocking on *Torch Song* and the ripping off of the wig --- made me wish they would release a DVD just of the movie parodies.

I was a kid when The Carol Burnett Show initially aired, but a kid who lived and breathed old movies. I read Carol's autobio years ago, and she was a movie-watching child too, the reason for all of those classic film parodies on her show.

I got the joke at age 12, loved them, and I'd love to have the chance to see them again.

OMG, what was the Bette-Davis-Good-Twin-Evil-Twin parody called?

  6. Holly,

I took absolutely no offense from your post, and I should have said thank you for the very nice compliment in it. To be honest, all of you are saying such nice things about me that it feels a little self-indulgent to keep saying "thank you" to each, and I don't want to take a moment of the spotlight away from CineMaven --- who deserves the *Now Playing* cover story right now, thanks to her terrific win.

I appreciate your kind words, make no mistake. But if there's room for others on that cover story alongside CineMaven, that belongs to the other terrific entrants in the Challenge, ALL of whom did a phenomenal job --- especially those who played for the first time. And if this is one of those fold-out covers, the extra panels belong to the moderators who preceded me, many of whom immediately offered help and support when I started. And certainly to my pal patful, who offered to back up schedules while I was out of the country "just in case."

It takes a Village to keep Chip from becoming Mrs. O'Leary's Cow and accidentally burning down the whole town. I'm glad (and LUCKY) I live in the TCM Village, which happily remains unburnt-down.

In my final act as Lucky 13 Moderator, I declare this week to be a Week of Celebration. No hurt feelings, no insinuations, no recriminations, et. al. And thus no need for apologies. Just a general agreement that everyone did a great job, and a hearty congrat for the Maven!

Now, begin shredding your confetti for CineMaven's tickertape parade! Long may she reign (until I dethrone her with the next Challenge, which _I AM DETERMINED TO WIN_ . So watch out, Nicoley, Polecat, and all of our other fantastic newbies!).

Now --- spotlight on the amazin' CineMaven!

  7. Although the movie itself is campy trash, it is really touching watching *Soylent Green* and knowing that shortly after filming EGR would pass away.

And worth noting that even in an exaggerated film like *SG* , and opposite a hammy showing by Charlton Heston, he turned in a fine performance.

  8. Let me second (third?) the statement that all of the Challenges have been well-run. In all of those I played before moderating the last, every moderator was quick to clarify and answer my questions, and most importantly cheerily keep things moving along. I would not have limped to the finish line this week except for my running on the excellent track laid by my august predecessors.

Lonesome Polecat, there is usually a gap of at least a month before the next Challenge is announced. The final call on that is now CineMaven's, who will no doubt take into account holidays, school starting dates, etc. Now that we've ensnared you, you'll think of all kinds of ideas between now and then. Keep a list of them and you'll find half of the next Challenge done when the Maven announces the next game!

As Lynn said, CineMaven, don't be intimidated as you plan the next game. If you get stuck, ask any of us to help. I can tell you that there were several PMs from TCMers who have moderated the game in the past that helped me through rough spots -- special honors go to Lynn herself, who figured out a way to access the gummed up threads so I could try and clean them up.

Thanks again all, and I look forward to playing ( _and winning_ ) CineMaven's Challenge #14.

PS: Don't forget I need your address if you want your Fox's U-Bet, players!

  9. And as the sun breaks over Manhattan...actually, it looks like another overcast day here...the votes are tallied, including a PM.

    And here you go!

    CineMaven 5

    Nicoley13 3

    Fedya 2

    Filmlover 2

    Capuchin 1

    Countessdelave 1

    Helenbaby 1

    ILoveRayMilland 1

The winner of Challenge #13 is CineMaven. CineMaven will have the honor of moderating Challenge #14.

My goal in this Challenge was to encourage lots of new players to join in, and happily that was the case --- in fact, look at the top two vote-getters! In light of this goal, I wasn't very strict about following every rule to a T -- those rules can be tough to digest completely the first time out --- but hopefully we can tighten up a little next go-round and play more strictly by the rules.

And as promised, this time there are prizes! The prizes I'm awarding were inspired by Fedya's schedule, and by my own high school job working in a movie concession stand.

As winner, CineMaven will receive a gift basket of old-fashioned brands of movie snacks --- Jordan almonds, Junior Mints, peanut chews, candy cigarettes (!), and other old favorites (these are vintage brands, but newly made, so she can safely snack away).

But you're all winners in my book, so _everyone_ gets a prize! All other entrants will receive a bottle of Fox's U-Bet Chocolate Syrup, which is the only acceptable brand of syrup to make classic egg creams at home.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, egg creams are THE classic New York soda fountain treat, dating back to the end of the 19th century. They contain neither eggs nor cream, and they have never been bottled successfully, so you either have to come to New York to enjoy them or make them yourself. I'm sending each person who entered a schedule a bottle of Fox's U-Bet, the recipe to make it at home, and the sincere hope that you'll visit New York soon and allow me to take you to the soda fountain at Veselka and treat you in person. To claim your prizes, just PM me your real name and mailing address. And to read up on egg creams and start dreaming of the tasty treat to come, check out

Thanks everyone for playing, and congratulations to ALL of the winners!

  10. Everyone, you have until midnight Pacific Time to vote.

That's 3 AM on the East Coast, and that's the coast I inhabit. That's midnight on the City of Angels coast.

Billy Wilder night or no (and Phyllis & Walter night or no), I have to turn in to sleepy time, and will announce the winner tomorrow.

Vote while I nap --- via PM or announce it in this thread. Last call for your votes for "Lucky 13!"

I think we all agree that every entry is amazing. So pick your favorite!

    .

  11. Although we're in the home stretch, this is an extremely busy work weekend for me, and my checking in and updating vote tallies will be scattershot.

Please remember that folks may also cast their votes via Private Message, so unless I have just updated the tallies the publicly posted votes tell only part of the story.

I won't be back tonight until (possibly) 4 AM ET, so surprise me then with a bucketful of posted or PM-ed votes!

Thanks to the excellent work everyone did, absolutely anyone can win, and the contest is tighter than I have ever seen it. Vote your conscience, vote for the best, and only vote once!

You have only until midnight PT tomorrow (Saturday) --- time to decide!
