While I know the classic *Guys and Dolls* has its flaws, I personally love it. And I'm not opposed to remakes per se. That said, I've seen most of Guy Ritchie's movies, and I can't imagine a more ominous project than his vision of *G&D* --- let's hope this is only a rumor. --------- Ritchie 'Working On Guys And Dolls' 27 May 2009 1:00 AM, PDT | From wenn.com Guy Ritchie is set to branch out from the world of gangster cinema - the filmmaker is reportedly in Hollywood to begin writing a script for a remake of Guys And Dolls. The director, best known for his London-based crime films, is said to have roped in movie hardman Jason Statham to show off his vocal talents in a reworking of the classic musical, which originally starred Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. A source tells British newspaper The Sun, "Guy has been on the case with the idea of making a musical recently. He had been throwing ideas around with Jason Statham about writing their own musical. "Guy has had a lot of meetings with top studio bosses about other projects but the Guys And Dolls idea really tickled him." But Ritchie could be sticking to a familiar formula when shooting begins - he is apparently considering basing the song-and-dance classic in his native Britain. The insider adds: "He is torn between keeping the script true to the original in New York and taking it to familiar surroundings in London."

yuck a whole weekend of WAR movies
ChipHeartsMovies replied to annelovestcm's topic in General Discussions
I wasn't actually complaining -- although war movies aren't my favorite genre by any means, I think its appropriate (and respectful) that TCM program them this weekend. And if any of you have never seen it, the movie *The Dam-Busters* is on tonight, and it is a real gem. (I'll even put my *Presenting Lily Mars* DVD on pause to catch that one again!). -

Um, Anne, it IS Memorial Day Weekend. Didn't TCM program a lot of those all-star war canteen musicals over this weekend last year? -
Rarely seen submarine film resurfaces on TCM.

Hope TCM doesn't "sub" another flick on the schedule and ruin your day. -
Just a mid-afternoon Memorial Day Weekend shout of encouragement to those still at work on schedules! (a.k.a. a blatant move to bump the thread to the top of the page). I know those backyard barbecues and trips to the beach are impossibly enticing, but surely SOMEwhere in this great nation it's raining and someone is eagerly tracking down the runtimes for their festival of movies based on St. Victor (the 13th Pope). Good luck all!

And she was running around with a bunch of "little creatures" on the *Star Trek* episode "Miri," but I doubt that's what you're looking for.

Well, I'm back! (Sort of). As I noted, I am traveling this week and as I suspected had very sketchy internet service in Eastern Europe (either very bad or very expensive). I just arrived in Amsterdam though, with fantastic computer access in my room. I'm so glad to see everyone is not only still plugging away, but coming up with great ideas! The schedules posted in the past few days (countess and filmlover) look great ... I'm glad several people are taking advantage of the access to silents, and the creative ways all of you have come up with for "13" are terrific! Charlie Chan's children! The 13th Amendment! The holiday weekend approaches, so I bet we'll see even more schedules in a few days. Keep it up, guys! I will not be back on the boards full-steam until Saturday, when I'm back in New York, but hope to really read the new schedules while I'm still here at least. PS: For those interested, I did visit *The Third Man* Museum in Vienna. It's a quirky museum occupying four different spaces with four different streetfront doors... the curators have to walk in and out with you and lock you in and out of each area. The original zither is there, as is every conceivable piece of memorabilia. Who knew there were MULTIPLE board games based on the movie? There's even an entire room devoted to the film's popularity in Japan! I also stopped by the Vienna Filmmuseum and found an interesting film series coming up about Viennese refugee filmmakers, but I hadn't time for that or *The Third Man* walking tour as I was there to work. Happily, the film is shown every Sunday at 4:30 PM indefinitely on the big screen there. Hopefully will make it to the Netherlands Filmmuseum tomorrow to research a European movie's availability for a fellow TCMer. And why did it take ten tries to access the boards?

patful, I fear that I run through the sewers just about everywhere I visit, one way or another. I just discovered that a cinema in Vienna shows *The Third Man* every Sunday. I don't know if I will be able to see it on my schedule, but I particularly love it when I am lucky enough to visit a faraway place and watch a movie that is quintessentially about that city. I got to watch *Flying Down to Rio* in my room at the Copacabana Palace Hotel when I did some work in Brazil, and that's the hotel where Fred & Ginger danced in the movie. The hotel makes the DVD available to every guest -- how cool is that? And everyone, what with those recent warnings of rapping the knuckles of scofflaws, I am sure patful will be taking names of those who misbehave while I am out of the room. So look sharp!

Several people, including me, have had a _very_ difficult time loading pages on the boards today. Hopefully the glitch will be fixed soon. Gang, I will be traveling in Eastern Europe beginning Thursday for nine days. I'll have spotty internet access until the middle of next week, although I will check in as often as I am able. If anyone has questions they anticipate, please ask now! New players, the many experienced folks here will certainly help you through any rough patches and answer questions. I'll pop in as often as possible. I'm starting in Vienna to attend an incredible event called Life Ball. But I'm also excited to get to visit the museum there dedicated entirely to the movie *The Third Man* - it's only open on Saturdays, luckily for me! And I end the week at the Amsterdam Filmmuseum! If you'd like to see Life Ball footage from previous years (which will certainly make you wonder what I'll be wearing Saturday night): It is one of the most elaborate and over-the-top parties in the world, I am so lucky to be able to go. But as I said, I am here for another day and a half, so bombard me with your Challenge questions!

TCM Message Board pages slow to load
ChipHeartsMovies replied to Kid Dabb's topic in General Discussions
I think the internets are getting too crowded. My AOL mail system crashes nearly every day in the 4-5:30 PM period. And this morning TCM timed out every time I tried to enter a thread. -
Forbidden Hollywood Inquiry
ChipHeartsMovies replied to antoniatones's topic in Information, Please!
Actually, Holly, there were hardcore films made all the way back in the early 1900's. The distribution was very limited but they do exist. There were hardcore films screened at lodges, bachelor parties, etc., but they were very clandestine. But you're correct about the timeline of the more easily obtainable/visible rise of hardcore. -
Sorry to chime in so late, I was tied up all day Sunday. LP, that looks like a terrific schedule! It isn't required that you do programming notes, but we really encourage you to do so. It gives us a peek into what makes you like the movies you do! I'm not sure where you got n/p --- we don't have "not a premiere" anywhere. We have p/s (previously screened), p/d (public domain), and Premiere. Anything that just falls under the allowed libraries needs no extra notification. This is shaping up to be a fine competition.

HAS ANYONE ORDERED THE NEW: ROBERT OSBORNE BOBBLEHEAD?
ChipHeartsMovies replied to spencerl964's topic in General Discussions
What an odd item. Is there actually a market for this? "Honey, I know we've had to cut back since you lost your job, but after all, I had to have the Robert Osborne bobblehead." -
Also, you might look at the musical shorts that most studios produced. It's particularly fun when you find rare footage of stars like Billie Holiday. Here's a link to a heap of Vitaphone titles. The outgoing links from that site don't appear to work, but you can scan the titles and see if any strike you enough to IMDB them. http://www.doctormacro1.info/Movie%20Summaries/V/Vitaphone%20Shorts.htm
