  1. ...oh! Ad I just met these extremely loverly people in Starbucks while typing on here that noticed I wso TCM and asked me about it. They were from the generation of the 50's, I think, and they are hardcore John Wayne fans, apparently. So we got into this cute little discussion about the difference between Mr. Eastwood and the Duke and they said it was a hard decision too, but then one of them told this awesome story about how his.....sister's husband's sister (golly I hope I got that right) met Mr. Wayne in the 60's and her twin boys were about 5 years old at the time and she asked if he could meet them, because they were BIG fans of his, so he naturally told her to go to the hotel he was staying at in their town. When they got there, the press was waiting down stairs for a big press release for one of his new movies he had just finished filming and he let the press wait for two more hours, while he played with those boys in the hotel room..How gentlemanly is that! Who has stories like that nowadays?! I mean, really! I was enthralled in this story while the nice gentleman told me about it. That story really has nothing to do with how good of a western hero he was, but I just wanted to tell it o everyone. Heehee!
  2. Well okay, this is an interetig question, because The Duke and Mr. Make-My-Day are from completely diffferent sides of the dessert. While I like both of them, I definitely think The Duke was more along the linesof "The Ultimate" cowboy hero, because he did such impressionable works of art on the screen for people of all ages. I mean Clint Eastwood did to an extent, but his movies reached a certain audiance Those would were attracted to them were of the older generation and mostly men, correct me if i'm wrong about the gender thing. he movies with Wayne were being enjoyed by all ages and not only by men. Maybe the reason I say that, is because I prefer wayne to Eastwood in many aspects, although Eastwood did have the more charismatic approach to being around women, where Wayne was more on the macho side and rough with his women, not that that was a bad thing. Heehee! What preferred Eastwood inwas more along the lines of whe was younger and not quite the hero yet, like in The First Traing Saleslady. I mean he didn't have the biggest part, but he was TOO CUTE for words and the perfect match for Carol Channing at the time. He was her rough rder on a horse that is practically every girl's dream. But then I go back to The Duke and when I span over all his movies, I just get this rough guy with a hard exterior, but a soft inside that was all gooey and mushy when a girl showed him the way it was, forget the fact that he killed all those bad guys in one blink of an eye without even trying and making it look like the easiest thing in the world. I don't know, I think my vote goes to The Duke, but that may just be me and my opinion silliness. Heehee!
  3. BTW, april, did you go to the Manchurian Candidate in New York? If so, did you review it and where can I find it on here? Edited by: butterscotchgreer on Apr 17, 2011 6:23 PM
  4. Long black feathers! I loved her feathers! Ha! I'm so usin that from now on in my fights withfrankie! It was your idea, so if i get in trouble, i'm blaming you....just kidding! Heehee!
  5. Hello foxycar, yes Rio Bravo will be on TCM again on May 26th at 5:30 pm their time...just take a look at the schaedule in May.. I hope that helps you...and yes it is an AWESOME movie. One of the best westerns ever made in my opinion. It shows John Wayne as a strong hero as always. You also get to see Dean Martin in one of his more serious roles as the Duke's deputy. That is a real treasure. And then of course to see Angie Dickinson at such a young age showing John Wayne the way it is..That always gives me goosbumps. Heehee!
  6. Hey Dahlink! Okay I am going to copy everything and put it in Hot Topics, so everyone can see the pics...I think you will like them. She looks so cute! But no, I didn't get a picture with her. I would have loved to, but I didn't want to bother her.
  7. Okay so last night was soooo exciting for me! I hope everyone else in the audienfce enjoyed it as much as I did! I got to the Paramount Theater an hour before the show started and the line was already clear out the door, stretched around the block and into a dark alley. It was awesome, i loved seeing so many people showing up! I even brought my sweetie pie with me and he didn't mind being there at all. But then again he doesn't mind westerns even though he doesn't understand other old movies at all. He's learning. heehee! So we were waiting in this line and there was the cutest little couple behind us, so I started talking to them and the guy in this couple must have been in his middle to late 70's, because he said his daddy used to own a big theater in Dallas in the 1940's and his job to help dad was running the projector. He said they did movie premiers all the time and he got to meet John Wayne quite a few times and they became friends over the years. Then he started naming all these actors and actresses he had met and then he said the name Greer Garson and my eye lits up like fireworks. I think I was in complete shock by then and joe, my sweetie, was on the side of me going, "oh brother..." heehee! The man said that since Greer lived in Dallas with her husband in the 50's, she used to come over to that theater all the time.. I got so jealous!! So he just told me all these fascinating stories about growing up with his dad and meeting all these people and...oh! he had another story that fascinated me... He said that he thought the most beautiful woman in the world, back then, was Olivia DeHavilland and how he went to some conference and Bette Davis was there picking a fight with another actress. Olivia Stepped right between them and calmed everyone down. He said she was a really sweet person in real life. Anyway! Back to the show, so we all went inside the theater and when we went to get popcorn, Angie Dickinson came right through the front door and there weren't too many people in the lobby anymore since everyone was starting to take a seat, and he noticed my dress and said, "don't you look so pretty tonight young lady!" I was in awe, but somehow said, "Well thank you, that was kind of you to say. It's nice to meet you Ms. Dickinson." and she smiled, shook my hand and left to go to the stage. I didn't think I would actually get to meet her, so that was rather loverly! Me and my sweetie actually got front row seats, which was awesome for the chatting, but when the movie started, we had to slide halfway down those silly seats to see the whole screen. Heehee! That was humorous. But I could tell Joe liked the movie, because he nearly cracked a rib every time Walter Brennan had a line. So after Ben came out on stage wearing his cute little cowboy boots, they started talking about her relationship with the Rat Pack and Frank Sinatra, and how everyone on the set of RIO BRAVO got along with Howard Hawks. she also told this funny story about her screen test in RIO BRAVO and how it came down to her and a pretty french girl, who she couldn't remember the name of. She was apparently in Whats New Pussycat. I can picture who she was talking about, but I couldn't remember her name either. Angie then said, "She had such a thick French accent, THANK GOD!" Heehee! I laughed so hard when she told us that. This is the ceiling directly above our seats. I just thought ya'll would like to see it, because its so pretty! Okay the images aren't coming up, what did I do wrong? Edited by: butterscotchgreer on Apr 17, 2011 12:16 PM
  8. Hey, anyone coming to Austin for the Rio Bravo showing, please let me know! I would sooooo love to meet some of you on here. It is going to be lots of fun and the Paramount Theater is outstandingly gorgeous! :)
  9. Wow! It sounds like I better get out my copy of Wee Willie Winkie and watch it, it's been several years. I always thought it was Shirley's best movie by a long shot if for no other reason than the way it depicts the lovely relationship between her and Victor MacLaglen. Really?! Oh How wonderful! I always thought this was a Shirley movie to perfection too! The chemistry between her and Mr. MacLaglen is so likable. It really draws you into the movie! Is this also your favorite Shirley movie?
  10. I never thought I would be saying this, but you haven't seen John Ford until you've seen Wee Willie Winkie. I was not prepared to see such a loving film. I must say, I do like John Ford in the 30s. His ability to tell so many varied stories during the decade is stunning. Where did that come from?! I never thought I would hear those words come from you! Can we get you to list your favorite John Ford movies in order now in the list thread? I know we have all done it before, but a modern up to date one....pretty please with sugar and long black gloves on top!
  11. The movie is not one of my favorites. But it's much better than the play. All changes in the adaptation are to the film's, and the viewer's, advantage. The play contains some silly numbers, as well as some terrible ones, that were thankfully eliminated. I'll say one thing. Ol' Liza with a Z is SEXY in that movie! Holy cow! You know I haven't seen the play on stage yet. I really wanted to, though, but I love everything on stage! I didn't know the play has some silly numbers, but I always thought those were the most fun to listen and dance to! Are they really that bad?
  12. Dahlink, thank you for informing me on TCM coming to Austin!! I'm super super excited about it! How many cuppas haveyou had today?
  13. FINALLY! A thread on this wonderfully unique musical! I grew up with this movie, singing it out loud in my living room, reciprocating the littedane she did to hesong, "Cabaret." ...Thank godness, I didn't have the actual outfit; my daddy would have died. Heehee! Liza is extraordinary in this role! She perfected it by every stretch of the imagination!
  14. This is what the inside of the Paramount Theater looks like here in Austin. It's on the same street as the Capital! It's beautiful outside as well as the inside! They play clssic movies there every summer at east tree orie times a week so me and Angie usually go together and look up at th ceiling and liste o the old music they have playing in the background before the movie starts. IT"S AMAZING THERE! Heehee! Rey, do you in if I call you rey, it sounds like we've been friends for a longtime that way! The place in Chicago sounds so loverly!! Mrs. Miniver on the big screen? Wow! I bet you didn't sleep for a week . Well that night, I had my Hospiality Law class, an it was my fnal exam, so couldn't seemy Greer finaly on the big screen like I always dreamed of, unfortunately. The things I do for good grades. Heehee! It's okay, I know they will show it again...one day. I wasn'tthe happiest camper that night, but I dd acemy test!
  15. Thanks, I got your message! Are you gonna be able to sleep tonight? I get excited really easily! Heehee! Of course I won't be able to sleep tonight! I guess it's a good thing I don't have to work early tomorrow or have class. You should have seen me when I saw that Mrs. Miniver was gonna be on the big screen in Austin and when I had my first date at 17.

  18. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I'm in austin Kyle! I am so going to buy a ticket!! I don't have anyone to go with me! And its Rio Bravo! They picked a GREAT MOVIE!!! I HAVE TO JUMP FOR HAPPINESS RIGHT ABOUT NOW!!!!!
  19. Mr. dutch white boy! I've only seen so many films in my life. I really am new to classic film. Oh my goodness! you've been saying that for three years. you're a pro by now, silly goose! Mr. Rey! CONGRATULATIONS on your 1,000 posts on here!!! We are all so proud of you and hope to keep seeing you around here. You are such a loverly delight to chat with about these glorious movies!
  20. Wow, that certainly is a tricky question. There are so many wonderful movies I have seen, it's almost impossible to choose the BEST one I have ever seen....I guess if I had to absolutely pick the top 6 Best films I have ever seen in my life they would be, in no order: *Funny Girl* *The Sound of Music* (this film literally gave me goosepimples as a child and they will never go away every time I watch this classic. I think this was the actual movie that I first knew was a movie. I thought it was all real as a child and when I turned, I think, 4 or 5, my momma told me they were just actors and that Julie wasn't the real Maria, and I started crying. ) anywho.... *Random Harvest* *A Star is Born (1954)* *Beauty and the Best (Disney)* but that could change any day... although, these will never fade off this list. Never.
  21. fxreyman, I love your "films by year" list! I particularly love your section from the 30's and 40's! A lot of people reccomend me to watch Howard's End, but I am getting mixed reviews from IMDB as to whether I would like it. I mean you can't go wrong with Vanessa Redgrave and Emma Thompson, but every time it comes on TV, I avoid it for some reaosn. Could you give me your thoughts pretty please?

I already knew about your "love" for No Country for Old Men, but you like The Machinist?! that movie freaked me out!! You like the weirdest things....Other than those, I think your list is rather good, especially the decade from the 80's list. Edited by: butterscotchgreer on Feb 25, 2011 5:33 PM
  23. I'll check it out. I always meant to, but got sidetracked. She is very sunny, I think I like her because she reminds me of my mom, who was a very attractive woman and thought nothing of it.. She was a "people person" who made everyone around her comfortable and happy. That;s sweet about your momma, Wendy! You definitely inherited that from her!
  24. I also will never understand how Bogart could send Ingrid Bergman away in "CASABLANCA" after she looks at him with those eyes. I'm with you Big T! I mean I can see why he did it, but at the same time, I can't. I wish they could just have put everything aside for their love, but Bogie knew best. He did what was best for her, because he loved her. It's sooo darn emotional!
  25. Mr. Lucky is worth seeking out. It's a romantic comedy with heart. You like a romantic comedy with heart? Somewhere a choir of angels is singing... Heehee!
